- djskitzy, on 12/16/2008, -6/+44451 areas.... coincidence? I think not...
/grabs tin hat - TheWilder, on 12/17/2008, -4/+93These aren't the only things blurred out on Google Maps.
http://i41.tinypic.com/2day2x5.jpg - MoeMoeMoe, on 12/17/2008, -23/+110Dugg for 51 areas.
- Neworab, on 12/17/2008, -1/+62There is a place not to far from where I live that is blacked out and has a red cross
heir over it.
Type in Lindvog Washington, and go up a bit. - johnj21, on 12/17/2008, -9/+56This is the 51st time I've seen this article on digg
- lowdose, on 12/17/2008, -1/+45Hmmm, sometimes hiding in plain sight is the best defense in a sensitive position. It may not feel good but you won't end up on a list somewhere on the internet. And you won't draw attention to your self, because you would be one of the crowd.
- sjbdallas, on 12/17/2008, -2/+46You and I thought the same thing....coincidence?
- gajolo, on 12/17/2008, -0/+38wow, that's awesome.
http://www.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geoco ... - chaoswings, on 12/17/2008, -0/+33#19 is a perfect example of one of the unwritten laws of the internet
". Cyberactivists circulated an email that contained a PDF file with annotated Google Earth screenshots of the supposed Bahrain sites. "
Try to censor something and that will only draw unwanted attention. It will also motivate people to try and spread the information stifled by said censor. - YEEK, on 12/17/2008, -0/+32It would be fun to paint giant pixels on my roof so it looks like my house is pixelated.
- mleh, on 12/17/2008, -1/+33It's not blurred out, but there's a section of Rachel, Nevada (just outside of Area 51, it's a legit town) that has Colonel Sanders' face obscuring something. Rachel, NV is a neat little place, home of the A'Lee'In or however they're spelling it. They're incredibly nice there.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geoc ... - Wonderama, on 12/17/2008, -0/+28Please don't let anyone know he also has a house in Old Tappan, New Jersey. DON'T FOLLOW THESE DIRECTIONS TO GET TO WILLIAM HURT'S HOUSE: do not take the Tappan Zee Bridge west to Route 303 south. When you cross under the Palisades Parkway and take a right on Old Tappan Road do not go about 1/2 mile to the Edgewood Country Club. He won't be sitting out front on the park bench waiting for his next movie.
- inactive, on 12/17/2008, -1/+29Really... by blurring out certain places you tell the enemy where to aim the nukes.
- inactive, on 12/17/2008, -0/+28You, him and I and I bet 48 others.
- inactive, on 12/17/2008, -1/+289/11 = 0.81~
coincidence? - woofers07, on 12/17/2008, -2/+27military, military, military, military, Dick Cheney's house.
hmmmmmm. - bbkingadrock, on 12/17/2008, -1/+24A red cross heir? You mean a descendant of Clara Barton?
- inactive, on 12/17/2008, -0/+21But the nukes will just blur right out of existence.
- NickTheAlmighty, on 12/17/2008, -0/+19It's not obscuring anything, they actually put a giant picture of Colonel Sanders on the ground right before the satellites took their pictures. They figured people would try looking in that area on satellite view and took advantage of it with a huge advertisement.
- diggface5000, on 12/17/2008, -1/+17you're right!! crap that's not too far from bothell i'm tempted to check it out
edit: this is what live maps shows in the same spot http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&FORM=LML ... - mynameistux, on 12/17/2008, -0/+14funny, I thought these places were just pixilated because of austrlia's internet speeds.
- statikuz, on 12/17/2008, -0/+13In 2006 KFC created a giant company logo on the ground at the north edge of Rachel and claimed it to be the first logo visible from space.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rachel,_Nevada - uncwidiot, on 12/17/2008, -0/+12That's addressed in the article; it's the vice presidential residence.
- MyExSucks, on 12/17/2008, -1/+12I feel like if an enemy wanted to nuke an area that's blurred out they'd know where it is whether it's blurred or not.
- anizzle, on 12/17/2008, -0/+11I'm sure the terrorists with millions of dollars'll just get Google Earth Pro.
- pyrotix, on 12/17/2008, -1/+12While looking at the Washington, DC stuff notice the giant pentagram built into the city's layout
- lolwaffle, on 12/17/2008, -1/+12I used to be able to see the base I was on in Iraq. You still can, but some areas, like the chow hall and where ammunition and explosives are stored, have been blotted out to look like desert. I used to be able to see mud tracks from when we got a humvee stuck, but that and the roads nearby are gone now too, likely due to it also being right next to ammunition storage.
- stuffradio, on 12/17/2008, -2/+12HAND ME HEAVY DUTY TIN FOIL!!
- thegrantman, on 12/17/2008, -0/+10William Hurts' house is off limits?
I want mine off limits too. - inactive, on 12/17/2008, -1/+11I hope you know no one is gonna read that.
- StigNordas, on 12/16/2008, -0/+9That's really creepy. I'd like to see all the requests Google gets that don't get addressed.
- RealmDown, on 12/17/2008, -0/+9I think the methodology is a false target while anything secret is conducted at a SECRET location.
Keeping Area 51 active yet completely off limits is a beautiful piece of mis-direction. - haikuFU, on 12/17/2008, -0/+9Interestingly enough, Area 51 *is* fully visible on Google Maps satellite view.
- ChromaVita, on 12/17/2008, -0/+8No matter how well endowed you think you are, It isn't visible from space...
- DavidTurnbull, on 12/17/2008, -0/+8Just Dugg you down to keep you at 51.
- Paulish, on 12/17/2008, -0/+8Its aiming a space laser!
- thegrantman, on 12/17/2008, -0/+8Brilliant..
- mleh, on 12/17/2008, -0/+7Probably has to do with Area 51 -- maybe Area 51 houses The Colonel's secret recipe that's commonly mistaken for flying saucers?
- Jonsey, on 12/17/2008, -2/+9RTFA. The roof on the white house is modified to hide things.
- synergye, on 12/17/2008, -1/+8Well, the letter A is the 1st letter of the alphabet, and H is the 8th.
9/11 (9 divided by 11) = 0.81 81 81 81 infinity = ha ha ha ha …” - vertigo32, on 12/17/2008, -0/+7Not really, that's what the high fences, harsh trespassing laws, and private security forces are for.
- apophenic, on 12/17/2008, -0/+7They should have made this a user map on Google Maps.
- MyExSucks, on 12/17/2008, -0/+7The University of Illinois is also blurred out.
...I wonder if there's some crazy weird government nuke research going on here or something?... - diggface5000, on 12/17/2008, -1/+7Actually, I found #18 quite boring.
- Spor, on 12/17/2008, -1/+7Go do some investigatory work and get back to us, mmmk.
- loneraver, on 12/17/2008, -0/+6ok, I found out what they are talking about. it's just a very small section of Utrecht. It must have been a mistake on google's part because there is simply nothing special there that I can remember worth being blurred out.
- directhex, on 12/17/2008, -0/+5"unwritten laws"?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streisand_effect - inactive, on 12/17/2008, -0/+5Do they still do any secret aircraft tests there? You'd think they wouldn't care as much now that the Cold War is over.
I think they thought the mythology of the place was just as important as whatever research they were doing there. - AManWithNoName, on 12/17/2008, -0/+5It's aluminum, you fool, not tin! Tin will only make it easier for the martian nazis to control your thoughts!
- str1fe, on 12/17/2008, -1/+6She shouldn't be obscure to anyone familiar with a history book.
