- stoanhart, on 12/29/2008, -5/+84I've never encountered a fake torrent or spam... is this really a problem people are having?
- ileftfark, on 12/29/2008, -1/+73Top torrent comments (on public trackers)
1) PLZZZZZZZZ SEED! STUCK AT 99% FOR 2 DAYS!
2) DO NOT DOWNLOAD - THIS TORRENT BROKE MY COMPUTER!
3) HOW DO I OPEN A .RAR FILE?
4) YOUR [sic] A FAG!!!!!!!! - NathanCH, on 12/29/2008, -1/+64I find reading the comment on torrents a better solution.
- seanieb, on 12/29/2008, -1/+56I wonder where its hosted. Surely the only reason sites like the Piratebay don't provide services like this is because they don't download any copyrighted material. This site is advertising that it downloads the files, and also in some cases hosts part of that file for the public to download. This is in breach of even Swedish law.
- harrythe3rd, on 12/29/2008, -1/+40I usually use a thing called common sense to filter my torrent choices.
- SonnyW, on 12/29/2008, -1/+31I've seen a few on brand new torrents for popular stuff. Usually the dozens of comments screaming "VIRUS", "FAKE" and "UR MOMS ***** ARE FAKE" should be clear enough.
- sandiegodude, on 12/29/2008, -0/+23Yea, that junk is pretty common... but if you dig through the comments enough you can find people with half a brain who say if it's a good torrent or not.
- allocate, on 12/28/2008, -1/+24Sweet. If this works, it could definitely be useful.
- web2pointYo, on 12/29/2008, -0/+20Is that .org or .net?
- Murdats, on 12/29/2008, -0/+20on public sites with 0 day stuff yeah, if you know what you are doing. no
- mockidol, on 12/29/2008, -0/+13In my opinion, not bad.
Only thing I could say is that a lot of the torrents are right off Pirate Bay trackers. Not a big deal but the Pirate Bay already deletes torrents with known viruses and also has a comment/ moderation system in place to help aid in that.
Kind of not needed I say. - kiffar, on 12/29/2008, -1/+14Piratebay is grossly overrated. I prefer Demonoid.
- digitalpencil, on 12/29/2008, -1/+13just read the comments?
- gothsquirrel, on 12/29/2008, -3/+14Well if you can just check the comments on a torrent on sites such as demonoid or pirate bay your usually alright.
- Ghstfce, on 12/29/2008, -0/+11OR... You can just read the comments of the file from users that have downloaded it.
- Totz83, on 12/29/2008, -0/+8Public sites are fine, if the individual can't determine what is trustworthy, they deserve malware
- PueSi, on 12/29/2008, -0/+8That's why it's always useful to have a Virtual PC to test suspicious files.
- Ghoztt, on 12/29/2008, -5/+13Piratebay. Do you use it?
- mclewell, on 12/29/2008, -0/+7I love how when you register and log in it shows your password in plain text
- midbc, on 12/29/2008, -0/+6or use sandboxie
http://www.sandboxie.com/ - FreddieD, on 12/29/2008, -0/+5I'm far more concerned with uploaded files that contain viruses on usenet than I am torrent sites. Most any legitimate public torrent removes malicious torrents very quickly. While I applaud the effort, it seems to be a solution in search of a problem.
- scheming, on 12/29/2008, -0/+5for those people who don't read or use the comment sections on most of the popular torrent sites, i am sure this is happening often. also people who don't bother to see who uploaded the torrent to a site and just like to download about as much random crap as possible. btw, this site is pointless, all good torrent sites already have a way of "verifying" the uploader which means that uploader is highly unlikely to upload bogus torrents.
- decker12, on 12/29/2008, -0/+5Unfortunately, this search engine can still be fooled quite easily. For instance, do a search for the latest Brad Pitt movie that's in theaters right now and you'll see what appears to be screenshots from the movie. Unfortunately, those screenshots are from the release's "SAMPLE.AVI" - not the actual movie. If you were to spend the time to get the entire release, you will find that the only legitimate file in there is the SAMPLE.AVI.
- Sonixunite, on 12/29/2008, -0/+5Buried and reported for spamming this website in every comment.
- Enchorito, on 12/30/2008, -2/+6Best solution: stop using torrents to download illegally. If your torrent files are legit, you have nothing to worry about. If you're downloading copyrighted material then you deserve whatever crap you get.
- Kennui, on 12/29/2008, -0/+4and WHATS PASSWORD
- SatNav, on 12/29/2008, -1/+4should've used tvrss.net. I've never had a problem with them.
- JiMiThInG, on 12/29/2008, -0/+3This site seems a day late and a dollar short to me. Now that ShareReactor.com has returned and is providing us verified torrents and flies under The Pirate Bay's flag we have a safe place to get torrents that we know are well spread and safe.
- mrBitch, on 12/30/2008, -0/+3Agree.
Also RE: "Now if we could just get douchebags to stop posting torrents with trojans and adware in them."
Why not use an OS that doesn't break when downloading "suspicious files" ?
ie: any Linux or *nix based OS. - PueSi, on 12/29/2008, -0/+3That looks much more convenient than using a Virtual PC, nice.
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2At last a sensible point!
The only reason you are going to get a screwed torrent is if you are trying to get something for nothing - legit torrents (like software distros) do not suffer from this problem.
Buy a DVD if you want a movie you jerks, - GodlikeMole, on 12/28/2008, -0/+2I agree, I know a lot of people who are never cautious enough to check their torrents before use, and end up with machines that I have to then go fix. Hopefully this site takes off and maintains a high level of quality, because if it does, I'll be sending all of those aforementioned people there to avoid future headaches :)
- MrAldo, on 12/30/2008, -1/+3Just what I was gonna say... just don't torrent...
If your trying to get something illegally and your computer gets f'ed up trying to do it, you deserve it...
Pay for the software FFS! Unless thats what your doing :P Which I have not really heard of anyone really using torrents for legal stuff at all. - redxxx, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2By people who take the time to sandbox the software and let AV/Malware software take a peek at it. It's safe to play with dangerous things, if you know what you are doing.
I imagine Vertor is going to be a little more culpable than sites that don't know what is in the files they host and don't download the content themselves. Unless they are going to host the data, it also means an extra upload right off the top without any seeds, so there is going to be a fair amount of lag.
They are knowingly hosting, presumably, copyrighted material and the site is registered out of Kentucky, I can't imagine it is going to be around for long. - joshuasawyer, on 12/29/2008, -0/+2I've found bad torrents on the Pirate Bay, so it's not fool proof.
- bitterbug, on 12/29/2008, -0/+2The thing about moderation like this is that it opens them up for liability. If they were hands-off then they could use the defense that they don't take an active role in user distribution of copyright infringed media.
They can't say the same thing when the moderators are verifying that the Transformers video is the real deal. - inactive, on 12/29/2008, -3/+5*cough*sharereator.com*cough*
Just use a site with moderated torrents and this is a non-issue - mrBitch, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1RE: "That's why it's always useful to have a Virtual PC to test suspicious files."
Even MORE useful : have an OS running on your PC that doesn't break itself just by downloading "suspicious files".
ie: any Linux distro. - Wade, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1What if downloading copyrighted material is legal where you are?
- inactive, on 12/29/2008, -5/+6Piracy FTW.
- IamTheJman, on 12/29/2008, -3/+4Demonoid has been scaled back to much. I still use it but it's not as great as it once was.
- Krissam, on 12/29/2008, -0/+1that will happen as long as they can make a dime of it.
- Murdats, on 12/29/2008, -2/+3the parts it hosts are covered under fair use.
- angrykeyboarder, on 12/31/2008, -0/+1But in order to get what they host they had to download the entire file themselves. By doing so, they're violating copyright law all over hell and gone.
It's not like a normal tracker/search site (e.g. Pirate Bay,. ISOHunt) where those who run it don't actually host the files, just the torrents themselves.
I don't see how these guys can expect to last long. - illDecree, on 12/29/2008, -0/+1Common Sense doesn't.
- MrAldo, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1Usually it is, as long as you have the right to it...
I could download MS Office 2007 right now from a torrent or whatever, wouldn't be illegal for me because I actually have a valid license :P and could of course use it on it - SirFink, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1"torrent comments" Try the whole freakin' Internets!
- umbrellainabin, on 12/31/2008, -0/+1heh heh
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1Seed plz!!!!
- inactive, on 12/29/2008, -1/+2By people who got screwed because as the first DL'ers they didn't know yet?
