- thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13i got that, but i sent it to 25 friends in the next 5 minutes so they are dropping the charges.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The last time I talked with the FBI they claimed they were a 14yr old girl...
bastards - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I work for the CIA and we ARE tracking all of you bastards.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What the hell? There's amateur pornography in there!
- iWorks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2heh, the creator of this is in deep doodoo for sure
- JzLosman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2smart but written very poorly. Not something FBI would email out to people haha. If you get an FBI email that seems like it was written by a teenager, it probably was.
- shakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I knew it was fake because I visit *way* more than 30 illegal web sites.
- drunkard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anti-Virus found the worms though (I-Worm/Sober.CF). What a waste of bandwidth, I got nine of them yesterday, but Thunderbird almost immediatley started calling it "Junk" mail. Nice.
I hope people will eventually learn this: DO NOT OPEN ATTACHEMENTS, EVER!
Even if my mom sends me an attachement I don't open it. She's a complete n00b, so how can I trust her? It's my mom, damnit! - Favrallon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I recieved this one on my Blackberry only account two days ago.
- bluehouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1maybe the FBI is trying to find out who all the idiots are
- frk410s2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that's not nice ddhr. not nice at all!
- steveoa3d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Our corporite mail server got hundreds starting yesterday, I thought it was some sort of phishing scam at first.
- Scorpion1337, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yea, one variation of this one slipped through our email filter. About 8 people got this, and only 3 opened it. But, at least our Anti-Virus caught it.
- a1a04824, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The sad part is that due to the police state and/or censorship that the US is moving towards, a ton of people probably opened the attachment thinking that it was for real. I'm not a conspiracy theorist but I think the US government is getting too involved in peoples personal lives.
- duke_nate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Had about 20 users that were freaked out about this today, luckily when they tried to open the attachment they got this little message.
"This attachment has been filtered due to possible security issues.
If you feel this was done by mistake contact your system administrator."
Mwahahaha - MasteRR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We got about 100 of these yesterday at work untill clamav's definitions were updateded to detect it. Hooray for linux email server with clamscan!
- AdamCo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I got the CIA one last night.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0awww... i don't get any *good* junk mail like this!
- strize, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Has anyone thought that this might actually be the FBI falsifying this worm.
A week later, Come to this site and download this activeX control so we can fix your computer.
Scanning for illegal files... - snyy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hmmm I haven't got a one I realy havent got spam in ages
- haxr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Damn.. and I thought I was getting recruited. =(
- pHr34kY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This only proves that too many people are stupid enough to:
a) Download an attachment from someone who is OBVIOUSLY spoofed.
b) Unzip a binary file to somewhere
c) Execute the binary file (with the extension of a binary!) It doesn't take a genius to notice that it's a .exe or a .pif or something.
Then you couple this with Microsoft's "Let's give every application administrator powers by default" strategy, and it's no wonder these things spread.
I'm sure M$ has a deal going with antivirus companies to leave well known security holes open to this sort of thing. - amitrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cant believe that some people would actually fall for this!!
i also got this *****!!..researched over google and there i was!
Google makes life so much easy!! - TheProfessional, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How can people actually believe that their email address can be gathered from their IP address? How stupid do you have to be?
- cunningt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whoever let this one into the wild is going to be in deep crap, because they made the FBI look bad. I bet they will be prosecuted hard, with every anti-virus law thrown against them as well as impersonating a federal agent.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I got one of those e mails tonight.....bah!
~mario - okto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Main thing is, why would a Federal agency ever communicate by email, when they could communicate via armed men in three-piece suits?
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I got one yesterday. I opened it, no problems. I open all attachments. Never have any problems.
Had a file called "File-packed_dataInfo.exe" in it. Harmless. - meshgiath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I work in IS at a Hospital.. not 5 minutes after I read this did someone call and report that EXACT email subject line. Nice )
- skimboarddan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My favorite part of the email: "admin@cia.gov" Damn, they've even got the network admin doing snooping....
- code_of_life, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I got two of these today.
Came from the same IP in VietNam. I emailed the abuse email address of the ISP in question. Dont think they will act...since its a virus and not a real spammer.
GMail cleaned the virus before I could add it to my collection :( - JHawk24821, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I work for a web hosting company and our spam appliance grabbed a HUGE amount of these today:
Sunday 441 total viruses out of 254,821 total incoming emails, or 0.1731%
Monday 468 ... 377,254 ... 0.1241%
Tuesday 1997 ... 455, 538 ... 0.4384%
Wednesday 5414 ... 438,485 ... 1.2347%
~300% increase, geez. - pupa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0> why does everyone keep asking what is an illegal site?
> It doesn't matter, it's a worm!
That's not the point. The point is that there isn't really any such thing as an "illegal website", it's all free speech protected under the First Amendment, and the fact that people are dumb enough to think that there is "illegal speech" on the net that you can get in trouble for viewing is exactly the reason why worms like this spread. - craterburnsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If the FBI was going to contact you, It wouldn't be by email. They'd have to supena your ISP for your personal Information, then they'd send you snail mail.
- dbpigeon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I haven't got it yet :)
Actually, I've had my email account for over a year, and I haven't gotten a single piece of spam yet. It's a miracle.
I don't think very many people would fall for this. It's pretty obvious. If you're gonna write a whole virus, at least have a good looking email to send to people. (Not saying its a bad thing this one sounded fake.) - Norseman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"And what in the world is an "illegal website"?"
That's what I was wondering. I mean what the *****? If it's an illegal website, why are they monitoring IP addresses instead of shutting it down? And why only tell you after you've been to twenty or so? - Rounin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually, the CIA is permitted to spy domestically under Executive Order 12333. There are some caveats, but nonetheless.
- shack95, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Funny the infragard.net FBI site doesnt list it, neither does the DHS ( after notifcation yesterday).
Anyways, have received a lot of spam from fbi.gov, cia.gov, various postma*, "office", "info" - helping to remove those asap in your email queue. - skizatch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ugh, I've received at least 300 of these over the last few days.
- iKato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Like everyone has asked, what's an "illegal website"?
- masterofshadows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The only thing remotely close to an illegal website, that i can think of, would be sites promoting child pornography and/or Britney Spears
- windwaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No such thing as illegal websites. ^^
- xcodemanx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Amen DMBmelch. Amen
- smeager, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wrote about this earlier today on my site. The official press release from the FBI was released this morning. Here http://www.fbi.gov/pressrel/pressrel05/emailscheme112205.htm
http://skulboxx.com/ - Pharoah6905, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if you look at the phone number its 11 digits long; its also too short and too simply written to be from any government body...lol
- brucebeh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"That's what I was wondering. I mean what the *****? If it's an illegal website, why are they monitoring IP addresses instead of shutting it down? And why only tell you after you've been to twenty or so?"
Lol yeah. I want to get one of these.. ;) just to see - MasterDwarf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Funny, I dont recall an Agent Starling...fiva beans? Why thank you.
- DMBmelch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've gotten tons of these.....Thank god I use a MAC, otherwise I might actual be affected by the viruses....
- Blackthorne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here's an exceprt from CERT's story on it:
These new variants of the W32/Sober virus identified above share common characteristics listed below. Once infected, the malicious code may:
* Attempt to harvest email addresses from a configurable list of file extensions
* Utilize its own SMTP engine to send itself to the harvested email addresses
Although each variant has different functionality, the list below contains a subset of the common characteristics found in previous variants. Once a system is infected, the malicious code may:
* Modify the system registry to prevent Windows XP's built-in firewall from starting
* Attempt to harvest email addresses from a configurable list of file extensions
* Utilize its own SMTP engine to send itself to the harvested email addresses
* Modify the HOSTS file to prevent the computer from accessing certain security and commercial web sites
* Attempt to terminate a number of running processes, some of which are security related
* Open a backdoor on the system that allows the attacker to communicate remotely with the system via IRC. This may allow the attacker to upload and execute arbitrary code on the infected machine.
