4. Profit! - SurferBette, on 10/10/2007, -2/+77Spread the word about this tool, especially to those who aren't so tech-savvy (like older parents, friends, etc).
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+73with adblock plus it wouldn't matter much. however, it'll be worthwhile to know which ISPs do these kinda stuff. Lets see what
diggers have to say about their ISPs.
Does any ISP in the UK modify pages? Please reply.. - kidwithshirt, on 10/10/2007, -4/+69Ad blocker....
I haven't seen any ads in months
I honestly miss the snorgtee girls - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+50thanks god I'm safe here in china!
- bctrainers, on 10/10/2007, -0/+37Interesting tool to say the least...
- hadak, on 10/10/2007, -1/+32oh. i get it! sarcasm!
...right? - t0ny, on 10/10/2007, -0/+31Then google notices all the clicks from the same ip address or yours if you are using the same ip to check adsense and you get banned. I thought about that too. I wonder how many people it would take to turn a profit.
- brodie7838, on 10/10/2007, -0/+28My ISP (whom I work for) uses this. We (employees) don't like it, but it's up to the "higher ups". That stuff about not being able to filter IP's is BS. If we get a complaint from a customer, we will add them to the "Do Not Disturb" list, so to speak. Also, business customers don't see the ads by default.
Anyways, Adblock Plus does filter the ad, but the frame is still visible. Here is what I see using FF.

Cable and satellite providers can safely get away with dubbing in a spot because they have agreements to do so AND everybody sees the same broadcast. Modifying a broadcast is ok because it's not like some dialog of yours is being messed with..
On the other hand, if the phone company were to insert audio clips into your calls. People would be lighting fires in the streets. No joke.
So does the fact that many web pages are simply doled out in a broadcast fashion make this tolerable? Are we supposed to not notice this crap? - LakeshoreBaby, on 10/10/2007, -1/+27OMG Videotron Quebec. PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF!
Changes everywhere. Doesn't surprise me. They are bastards to the core.
Filterset P is available in script form for Greasemonkey at userscripts.org
Less space used up and quicker load time than Adblock. - orangester, on 10/10/2007, -2/+27You miss the snorgtee girls? Just look at porn. A lot of interesting stuff on this here internet.
- mookieXL, on 10/10/2007, -0/+24All clicks coming from single IP, yes, that'll surely work.
- Zachariah, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18I hope that when ISPs figure out that they're being tested with this page that washington.edu requrests that the page be hosted by volunteers, too.
- karthickdoss, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16There is a company that does this.
www.nebuad.com/providers/providers.php .
They help ISPs to inject/insert advertisement into the pages. This is a dangerous trend. Google knows only what we do in their network (for behavioral ads)but ISPs know everything.
Tech crunch post
www.techcrunch.com/2007/06/23/real-evil-isp-inserted-advertising/
It is scary. - TomP, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15I dont miss the flash ads that cover the whole page.
- r00tus3r, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13You could try shutting down zonealarm and running the test again.
- evilregis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13He should just shut down zone alarm and leave it at that.
- AnotherBrian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12It doesn't look like this would test banner ads which is what I would expect them to change.
If they messed with the text or links, that would be noticed very quickly. But they could get away with swapping out banner ads from major services because the author of a website wouldn't know what pic is being displayer in the first place. They could run *adsence.com through a transperent proxy since I doubt advertisers are using SSL to serve you banners.
Not that it makes it any more ethical. - MalDON, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Wow, Att all clear!?!
- shaunj66, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13No modification here (NTL/ virgin media UK)
- tehKnivage, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11All good for me :) Internode, Australia. Interesting test...
- TomP, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11None here.... Wanadoo UK
- mrfunkeye, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11If an ISP provides free access (wifi hotspot etc.) I wouldn't mind having ads inserted. But as a paying customer I would be really pissed.
One thing is for sure: they cannot mess with https / SSL connections. I am also wondering if they are able to modify gzipped html-content. - dahamsta, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12+1 UW
- cyberoidx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11So apparently NO ONE has an ISP that has been messing up? Wow that means that this project is flawed, Uh, Oh, i mean, we have very nice ISP's....
- NinjaBoy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10People who know how to use adblock dont click on ads anyways.
- richardiscool, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9They weren't modified because the pages didn't have anti-government messages.
- Tobey, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Umm...look at the comment above yours and tell me what you see.
- KLowD9x, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Road Runner shows good for me.
Comcast must not have bought out the service in my area yet. - titlesaysitall, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10快来救我! 我作为人质,在这里中国! 我的ISP杀死我的急流中,并踢我的电脑出了窗外! ! 他们是未来,现在,唉……石
- OrangeTide, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9HTTP runs over TCP which is a connection based protocol. You establish a semi-private connection between two (and only two) peers when you use TCP. So "broadcast" is not really all that accurate of a way to describe serving up websites. A webpage is not like television under the hood, although to the layperson (and the courts) it might seem equivalent.
- jtb4, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Cisco router + dynamic IP addressing = AdWords Profit!
- DarthAwesome, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9i bloody well hope he;'s being sarcastic...
- Alex.w, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9You mean Orange, we haven't been Wanadoo for more than a year and a half mate.
- CompIsMyRx, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Comcast is ok. But then again, please run Adblock.
- aaronm67, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11Jesus, nobody wants to read your ridiculous conspiracy articles, especially not on an entirely unrelated article.
Also, there's no reason to take up two full screens with your links, pick one or two you think are most relevant (not a dozen articles about impeaching bush and how 911 was a conspiracy) and post them. - pixeleyes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Well, NTL/Virgin Media seems to edit mine with the line:
But after some research that could be because of ZoneAlarm, anyone else out there with ZA that can confirm this?

Here's the english translation for the rest of the world (babelfish)--
"Quickly rescues me! I take the hostage, in here China! My ISP kills me in the jet stream, and kicked my computer to leave outside the window! ! They will be the future, now, oh... ... Stone" - Teej, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Guess what, read the comments.
- richardiscool, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Ah yes, Charter, in Michigan, USA - the great UK ISP.
- gamesector, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I'm on Virgin and there's no modification for me :)
- smartmlp, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8I don't really believe in running all those third party applications on my computer, I try to limit it as much as I can. I do however maintain a huge block list of ad sites that are blocked at my router. It works on anything that connects to the network, so no one sees the ads regardless what platform they are on. It might be something that you guys should look into if you don't feel comfortable running the ad blocker software.
- DarthAwesome, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5dude, i half expected them to be editing out swear words
- Pekay, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5No modifications on BT here.
- josmtx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5That's weird. I am with Videotron as well (near Montreal), using High Speed Extreme, and everything is ok.
- mattatron, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6All tests positive when surfing from Vodafone 3G. They also further compress all images in order to make the connection seem faster.
Good to hear that VirginMedia don't modify, I'm getting my cable connection with them this afternoon! - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6as apposed to the telstra in ukrain
- coolspray, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6No adverts here (homechoice/tiscali)
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Thanks a lot guys.. Funny though, where BT?
