- phunlee, on 01/24/2008, -2/+19Wow. People really take this THAT seriously?
I would only care if I was getting paid, are some of you getting paid?
Good luck on those other sites. - lresig, on 01/24/2008, -2/+13I'm sick of the top digg users always getting to the front page with their high-brow circle jerks. The real issue here is a digg democracy -not playing favorites to the dinosaurs. Guess what, the stories that the "top users" have found would have been found anyway -you're not that special.
- misterhat, on 01/24/2008, -2/+12This is the best news for digg I've seen in a long time. Maybe we will get interesting stories instead of what MakiMaki, Mrbabyman, et all rip off other websites and submit to digg
- chaosium, on 01/24/2008, -0/+9Absolutely. there should be no "top users", the only thing that's good for is making dough off blogspam.
- frooch, on 01/24/2008, -2/+10It's a good thing there's nothing else important going on in the world to worry about. This is definitely worth the energy.
- COINTELPROAgent, on 01/24/2008, -6/+13Go to reddit, crybabies.
- hotfuzz, on 01/24/2008, -5/+12We need an open debate.
- inactive, on 01/24/2008, -0/+6I completely understand why digg needs to moderate stuff. I also understand why they banned sites that are somewhat associated with top or active submitters. As for making it harder for top submitters to get a story for the front page, I challenge anyone to find a story submitted by MrBabyMan that isn't front page material. I just don't understand why everything needs to be so secretive. Yeah, showing who buried what story may result in some bury wars for a little while, but it will also go away...that's the nature of 12 year olds, they get bored. Here's how it should work IMHO:
1. Visible moderators - when a story gets removed by a mod there should be a short explanation as to why it was removed. Killing a story because someone is gaming the system for political gain is a valid explanation.
2. Even if you don't want to show who buried what story, at least when the story is buried it should say "This story is buried" and list the number of people who buried it (without naming names if you're so afraid of it).
3. Sites that are auto-buried should just be banned. The auto bury stuff is insulting...when you try to submit a story from a banned site it should say "this site is banned because...".
4. If you're going to demand that top submitters get 200 votes before their story hits the front page, please employ moderators to check which stories you're blocking. In most cases you'll be missing out on great submissions. If a dupe gets to the front page just because it was submitted by a newbie, then you guys are doing something wrong. - nonforma, on 01/24/2008, -0/+4Digg is the users. The response will be when everything continues as usual, sans the recent rash of crappy submissions.
- MrTito, on 01/24/2008, -0/+2I don't mean this in a smarmy way, but if you guys are so adamant about focusing your energies elsewhere then why is all of your energy being focused at Digg about this issue? You're throwing around these threats of leaving if Digg is not operating in a way you like. But you say it's about being a democracy. Debate is healthy. Understanding is healthy. Taking time to digest what has changed instead of flying off the handle is healthy. If I had invested as much time in this place as you guys have, hell yes I'd be pissed. But obviously you care or you'd quietly move on. So, instead of flying under the false flag of democracy but screaming "we want it our way", why don't you just take some time to see what is actually gonna happen here.
Otherwise, you're all quickly starting to resemble the Ronbots. Don't be that. - gophur, on 01/24/2008, -0/+2"If Digg is a game then we are ready to play for keeps. What happens if the most powerful users in the community decide to leave? Will others join? Is Digg anything without us? Let's prove it. --Top Digg Users"
LOL! These guys really take the cake! What will happen? Nothing except you will be gone and the proles (those of us who are not "top" Digg users) will continue on casually submitting stories and reaping the rewards of the Digg. The vast majority of us won't even know you were ever here. "Most powerful users" indeed. Take your toys and go home. Please. - SilentJay74, on 01/24/2008, -0/+2The point is "It's not theirs" All media and submissions are generated by users. Without the users Digg is nothing.
- ma11man, on 01/24/2008, -0/+1Ustream FTW! KEVIN & JAY APPROVE!
- dtele, on 01/24/2008, -0/+1Why should digg negotiate? It's an established business model. If they kneel to your demands, they lose control of what's theirs.
- gallardo, on 01/24/2008, -1/+2This was a much needed change. How do you think the most lame/obscure stories from Gawker Media or Weblogs Inc or other large sites/blogs always hit the main page? They have huge groups of people to help them game the system.
Gawker Media (Gizmodo, Valleywag, etc) recently introduced a pay-per-traffic system for its editors rather than a pay-per-post or salary structure. This is 95% built around Gawker staff gaming Digg or otherwise getting their stories on Digg. Straight up... that's what it is. Why do you think Gawkers are all upset about this now? - chaosium, on 01/24/2008, -0/+1They're both. They control to enable and perpetuate longevity.
- AndersP, on 01/25/2008, -0/+0put down the mouse. slowly back away from the computer. go outside. breathe in breathe out. have a picnic. eat some dirt. find animals in the clouds. spin around until you puke. roll in the grass. fart a little if you like.
life is a game - digg is just a service - whatever it is that's upsetting you 'top diggers' (and i will be honest here and say that I have no idea what that connotation infers- do you wear ascots and top hats?) will pass - and if it doesn't - click on down the road - buh bye - sparf, on 01/24/2008, -1/+1"I'm sick of the top... always getting to the front... with their high-brow circle jerks. The real issue here is a... democracy -not playing favorites to the dinosaurs."
You just described American democracy.
If Digg (or any similar site) figures out how to make a fair system, I say we alter higher-level politics accordingly.
Otherwise, dem seems to be the breaks. - laaabaseball, on 01/24/2008, -2/+1http://digg.com/tech_news/DIGG_REVOLT_on_Algorithm ...
- assasin, on 01/24/2008, -1/+0It's Fark all over again.
- tomboy501, on 01/24/2008, -7/+4Kevin Rose's response to this issue on the digg blog was kind of insulting. Bunch of corporate double speak and cut and paste phrases I've seen before.
Why can't he just address the issue cleanly? - praderwillie, on 01/24/2008, -6/+1I'm not, nor can I claim to be a "top user" on Digg, but I've been active digging, commenting and submitting (did not participate in circle jerks or spam the site). YET I've been kicked off Digg twice for no apparent reason. This is my 3rd handle I have come up with and I am just starting from scratch AGAIN. I created a new email address and am using a new IP address. -but now that I have outed myself, lets just see if I get kicked off again. Come get me "secret editors". Everyone check back tomorrow to see if "praderwillie" still exists -by the way AWESOME article!!! I want to see Buries -I want a true Digg democracy!
- ddover, on 01/24/2008, -9/+3Why are so many smart people in the web 2.0 space acting so dumb. People like Mark Zuckerberg and Kevin Rose need to realize that they are not the ones who control their respective websites, they are merely the ones responsible for their longevity.
