- failtrain, on 03/09/2009, -8/+651. Uninstall adobe reader due to flaws, excessive bloat, and crazily long load times.
2. Install foxit reader http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php
3. Profit. - gumballer, on 03/09/2009, -1/+26Actually Foxit suffered from the same bug. They released a new update today. Adobe will release their update on the 11th.
- eviljolly, on 03/10/2009, -0/+15PHP != PDF
- sammyc53, on 03/10/2009, -0/+14It's not linked to a PDF. It's linked to a website. Internet much?
- brainintraining, on 03/10/2009, -1/+13But, it's NOT a PDF, so your point is void.
ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD - voldron, on 03/10/2009, -0/+12Most people don't need the enterprise level of adobe. Most just read PDFs rather than editing them.
- latrosicarius, on 03/10/2009, -0/+11And dont forget to get PDFcreator from sourceforge so you can print to PDF too
http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/ - leamanc, on 03/10/2009, -0/+11Yes, you shouldn't use Internet Explorer, but they are talking about Windows Explorer...the thing you use to browse the file system with.
- D4M4N, on 03/10/2009, -2/+12you realize mac have viruses too, and so you know within the next year or two the virus amount will only grow as mac actually gains some percentage of the market.
- sammyc53, on 03/10/2009, -1/+9Foxit is for viewing, it provides nothing to corporations that need Adobe Suite's of powerful coloboration and editing packages.
- FredFredrickson, on 03/10/2009, -0/+8Yeah, purchasing a $2500 computer will solve all your problems.
How about you don't download PDF's that aren't coming from safe places... for free? - solid12345, on 03/10/2009, -0/+7What you mean this isn't an origami Super Mario template I am downloading? Bastards!
- priegog, on 03/10/2009, -0/+7Oh, come on. This isn't even Microsoft's fault.
But just spewing out ridiculous amounts of cash for what you're buying isn't generally a good solution for any problem. - voldron, on 03/10/2009, -1/+8I love foxit over adobe reader, much faster.
- lvizon, on 03/10/2009, -1/+8tfa said windows explorer, which i don't think is the same as ie.
/on a mac - nighthawk8713, on 03/10/2009, -0/+7I'll buy anything if it's shiny and made by Apple.
- f355x3, on 03/10/2009, -0/+7The story isn't a PDF file, look more closely next time.
- computershack, on 03/10/2009, -0/+6It's the patched version. Got it through autoupdate today.
- Zaeboes, on 03/10/2009, -2/+8Adobe's. Their shell extension was the hole that allowed attackers to get to explorer.
- voldron, on 03/10/2009, -3/+9Get linux!
- inactive, on 03/10/2009, -1/+6Uh.. It's Adobe's fault. Read much?
- jgtg32a, on 03/10/2009, -1/+6You're *****
- cybercat, on 03/11/2009, -0/+5That's not exactly true, it was a different problem that happened to be in similar code. So yes it was vulnerable, but not to the same problem.
"The Foxit and Adobe bugs are unrelated, however, except for the fact that they are both in the code that parses JBIG2 images, said Thomas Kristensen, chief technology officer at Secunia AsP, the Danish company that reported the flaw to Foxit. "It is a completely different vulnerability related to JBIG2," Kristensen said in an e-mail Monday." - Hurricane, on 03/11/2009, -0/+5Sure, pay $3000 for a solution to a software problem, which can be solved with FREE replacement software (Foxit reader).
BTW, PC does NOT = Windows (MS&APPLE TV commercials alluding to such piss me off.), we have alternatives that are acceptable and functional including FreeBSD and KDE which gives a person about 90% of MacOSX, and Debian is the end all of *Nix. - molotovcat, on 03/11/2009, -0/+5Both.
Adobe for creating insecure code (something every company does) and Microsoft for designing an implicit allow all OS.
If you have a design philosophy that allows any program to blow open the security of an OS at will, you will NEVER be caught up on security. - Hurricane, on 03/11/2009, -0/+4For those who missed it anywhere above.
Solution = Foxit Reader, you will thank yourself. - D4M4N, on 03/10/2009, -0/+4again?
- inactive, on 03/09/2009, -1/+5???
- ahhell, on 03/11/2009, -0/+4Acrobat reader is a steaming pile of monkey *****.
- NeonDistraction, on 03/11/2009, -0/+4If you read the article more closely, you would have read the part where it said the crashing of Explorer was just something the guy setup to demonstrate the vulnerability. He specifically made it so it would crash it; someone with malicious intent could use the exploit to do much more than crash Explorer.
FTA: "Stevens proof of concept caused Explorer to crash, however, someone with dubious intentions can exploit the vulnerability to potentially do anything they like on your system."
Also, it should be 'past' not 'passed'. Buried. - netneutrality, on 03/10/2009, -1/+5I persist in using Acrobat 5.0. On modern computers it loads instantly and it's lighter than Foxit Reader, and has nicer font rendering.
(I take the chance that any vulnerabilities it has are so ancient and obscure that they won't get targeted any more.) - pwr4, on 03/11/2009, -0/+3Foxit Reader used to be fast, lightweight and bloat free. I also reports back to the home office looking for updates. I prefer Sumatra for a quick, simple pdf reader.
- drewbeta, on 03/10/2009, -3/+6no, don't buy a Mac. I use Macs, and if everyone switches to Macs then Hackers will start writing viruses for Macs. Hackers try to get the most bang for their buck when it comes to writing viruses.
- aliguana, on 03/10/2009, -0/+3adobe reader 9.1 turned up on Filehippo today. Is that the patched version, or should we wait until it appears on Adobe tommorow?
- senmu, on 03/10/2009, -0/+3I can offer you a Super Mario tri-fold birthday card template I personally put together that is 100% free of viruses :)
http://www.gosammy.com/2007/06/16/boring-greeting- ... - theOster, on 03/10/2009, -0/+3i've found PDF X-Change Viewer to be better in a lot of ways to Foxit:
http://www.docu-track.com/home/prod_user/PDF-XChan ... - Cheysuli, on 03/11/2009, -0/+3To all you 'Buy a mac' people; Wasn't this vulnerability suspected to cross all platforms?
http://www.downloadsquad.com/2009/02/20/adobe-warn ...
"Bad news for anyone that utilizes Adobe's Acrobat software, or Adobe reader to view PDF files. A critical vulnerability has been identified that can cause the applications to crash and allow an attacker to control the affected system. All versions from 7 forward on all operating systems are suspected to be at risk." - lukas88, on 03/11/2009, -0/+2I'm not big on foxit either, they find little ways to nag you into purchasing the software. Also, they try and get you to install the ask.com toolbar and change your homepage to ask.com.
- 0tis, on 03/10/2009, -1/+3I think perhaps he thought that because the submitter thought it would be a good idea to put (PDF) after the title. That's the only reason I clicked on this story in my feed - to see if that was in fact the case.
- brentis, on 03/10/2009, -1/+3Some security firm announced foxit as vulnerable..
Read it here. http://secunia.com/advisories/29941/
Try an online PDFviewer until the dust settles. - Khast, on 03/10/2009, -1/+3Naw, I blame Bob, the exploit finding gnome.
- Hurricane, on 03/11/2009, -0/+2@failtrain
I had very good ideas to post but you beat me to it. - Khast, on 03/10/2009, -1/+3everyone, they just wait for the exploits to be found before patching them. (Why beta test? When they can just send it out and let us do it for them.)
- inactive, on 03/10/2009, -0/+2This problem is Adobe. Triton, I know you're an idiot, but don't let it show so much.
- mikael110, on 03/15/2009, -0/+2ok. sry for misunderstanding you.
- Hurricane, on 03/11/2009, -0/+2Indeed KDE is not an OS and I did not say it was, it is a Desktop package for several different OSes, including flavors of BSD which is what I was talking about, as MacOSX is BSD & KDE based with a little bit of proprietary stuff such as Darwin thrown in..
- drewbeta, on 03/11/2009, -0/+2I don't know about that, most hackers that I know are okay with Mac OSX because it's Unix-based. If they're doing it out of principle, they will still target Windows because it's a crap OS built on a bloated kernel with a large market share.
- dextermanas, on 03/11/2009, -0/+2Have you even tried the 9 series Adobe Readers? They're quite fast, even without the speed loader. On any modern computer, PDF files should open in a jiffy. In case it doesn't, all you have to do is disable/delete the unnecessary plugins. I never felt the need to switch to Foxit on my PIII machine.
Sure, MB-wise Adobe is much more heavier than Foxit, but it has the features to back it up. For starters, it delivers better performance when dealing with complex PDFs. Panning, zooming, rendering all are all smoother and faster on Adobe. Ever tried loading high-res PDFs loaded with HQ pics? Adobe once again does a better job than Foxit.
Of course, if all you want to do is read small and simple PDFs, by all means use Foxit/Sumatra/PDF-X/Google/etc.
No comments about the security issues though. (Although I don't see how it can affect a limited user account...) - theOster, on 03/10/2009, -0/+2get a life
- theOster, on 03/10/2009, -0/+2the internet has better resolution than real life
