- pthatcher, on 10/14/2009, -1/+19I think the best part of the story is how the 2 kids that got access to a nuclear facility weren't charged
- Brak710101, on 10/14/2009, -0/+17Botnets to do a DDoS attack are a joke, nothing more than script-kiddies at play. Here we just see one dumb enough to do something big with it, and he of course got caught because he didn't cover himself.
- buzzd1ggity, on 10/14/2009, -3/+20It's official. Time for me to re-watch Hackers.
- andyboyd, on 10/14/2009, -0/+14It's hilarious (and slightly worrying) that a 14 year old can bring down eBay, Amazon, CNN and Yahoo single-handedly
- chris1234, on 10/14/2009, -3/+17In high school I cracked my buddies password (password) and got to some pics of his girlfriend. I'll show you the pics if you put me on the list.
- maxyRO, on 10/14/2009, -2/+14How does a 16 yo sticks it to FBI? Who works for FBI anyway?
- dragpent, on 10/14/2009, -0/+11Jeanson James Ancheta
Last time I checked, twenty is not a "teen". - GamerXR72, on 10/15/2009, -0/+10That movie is goddamn ridiculous.
- leamanc, on 10/15/2009, -0/+8Agreed. At least it's better than The Net, which IIRC, was from the same year.
Funny how War Games, which came out more than 25 years ago, is more relevant today than either Hackers or The Net. - databeast, on 10/15/2009, -0/+7We've been calling it phreaking since the late 60's... it's a concatenation of 'Phone Freak', and like I said, the term was coined in the 60's, yeah, it sounds a little jaded, but it's got a history to it that would be sad to abandon now.
- TexMexRex, on 10/15/2009, -0/+7In most of these stories, the man stuck them pretty hard. While the hackers stuck it to a few members of the general public.
- jwalske, on 10/15/2009, -0/+6"Jeanson James Ancheta, a reported member of the "Botmaster Underground," a group of script kiddies." Script kiddie- not a hacker.
- GamerXR72, on 10/15/2009, -0/+6I fear politicians more than nerds.
- DiggMeUpPlz, on 10/15/2009, -0/+611. chris1234 cracked his buddies password (password) and got to some pics of his girlfriend.
- Beatmiser, on 10/15/2009, -0/+5They're hacking the Gibson!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3XzPhdBx9g - TexMexRex, on 10/15/2009, -0/+5Lots of us.
- kaosethema, on 10/15/2009, -1/+6so, giving it to the 'man' is jeopardizing Joe Average's physical, emotional, mental, social and financial health?
buried for putting petty criminals on a pedastal. - Yaanu, on 10/15/2009, -0/+5They're trashing our rights!
HACK THE PLANET! HACK THE PLANET! - SumoSniper, on 10/15/2009, -0/+5Not only that, but clearly they're not very good hackers, seeing as they all got caught and all.
- kylescousin, on 10/14/2009, -3/+8l33t
- Puppytwo, on 10/15/2009, -3/+8I really wish they would stop calling it phreaking, something about that word just makes it sound, I don't know, stupid?
- Boxtavious, on 10/15/2009, -1/+5Am I the only one surprised that once caught they weren't given lucrative contracts to use their services for good? I mean one of them eventually became a CTO but come on, the best defense against future hacking is to have the next up and coming generation of hackers on your side.
- Iceman21, on 10/15/2009, -0/+4Yup, they hack a computer with their laptops turned OFF (train station scene, circling a payphone 4 way booth i think)
- tek69, on 10/15/2009, -1/+5They all get lumped together by the norms.
- Bukowsky, on 10/14/2009, -1/+5It's the 'harmless nerds' that scare me the most.
- meed, on 10/15/2009, -0/+31) they all got busted in some way.
2) they really didn't stick it to the man.
Article was beyond disappointing.
Real "teen" hackers that stuck it to the man, are the ones that never got caught. Yes, there are most likely dozens if not hundreds Hackers who rubbed more than two braincells together and didn't get caught or stopped before they did get caught. I was hoping to hear about something things people had done as a youth and the statute of limitations had run out. - booyahbitch, on 10/15/2009, -0/+3LOL! The funniest part is the fact that they ALL got busted! Yeah, they are really teaching the lessons there, aren't they?!?
- numberneal, on 10/14/2009, -2/+5deep w/o ky
- MewtwoReturns, on 10/15/2009, -0/+2@leamanc: What about Antitrust?
- chriswastaken, on 10/27/2009, -2/+4http://lmgtfy.com/?q=CCNA
- backwardscompat, on 10/14/2009, -0/+2Geez, well done!
- stabile007, on 10/15/2009, -1/+3Some of these "hackers" were doing nothing but being destructive. As someone else said they are just petty criminals. I am sorry trying to crash boats in port!? Who does that help? Not the people driving the boats, not the dockworkers who are at risk, not all the emergency services who would have been called, not the people who have to suffer because all the fire trucks and ambulances are now tied up at the docks. And they got off as not guilty thats just ridiculous. Most of these cases are like that or utterly pointless. Calling in SWAT to attack some innocent person? Yeah real classy that serves who? Just yourself for the giggles.
Utterly pointless article. - crashdvis, on 10/15/2009, -1/+3If only women's panties were kept on their bodies by computer code. That would be about the only way any of these hacker nerds would ever get panties off an actual woman.
- Boxtavious, on 10/15/2009, -2/+3+1 digg for FBI. I support our national policing force more then the state or local level.
- mactackle52, on 10/15/2009, -1/+2Nvm, was going to ask what CCNA was but googled it myself lol.
Edit: *****, that's what I was hoping to avoid. - tacojohn48, on 10/15/2009, -0/+1You want a video? Turn on your camera.
- Punch405, on 10/15/2009, -0/+1Oh, they got busted.
/conviction is something else - grbruner, on 10/15/2009, -0/+1Not all of them got busted.
FTA: "a jury found Caffrey not guilty in October 2003." - macfan93, on 10/14/2009, -1/+2This list instantly made me think of Stephen Glass' story "Hack Heaven"
Thank god it wasn't on the list. - MattBD, on 10/15/2009, -0/+1@leamanc
I don't know for certain, but I would guess that the reason for that is that War Games was made before hacking became misunderstood in the way it has. Too many things portray it now as being like "I'm going to hack into this top secret government database, just give me five seconds!", while War Games portrays it more realistically as an activity requiring endless patience for war dialling. - masterstghm, on 10/15/2009, -0/+1HACK THE PLANET
- xBloodSplatter, on 10/15/2009, -0/+1It's ok we're all nerds they wont harm us for we are all one.
- Swivelstick, on 10/15/2009, -0/+1***** since G.W. everyone has a hard time saying it.
- scooz, on 10/15/2009, -0/+1britain does it again =]
- MattBD, on 10/15/2009, -0/+1Not really, I reckon it's a numbers game. Get a load of hackers trying to bring down one site and one or two are bound to succeed through pure chance if not skill.
- TdotFUNK, on 10/15/2009, -0/+1At first glance I thought this was about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles :(
- MWeather, on 10/15/2009, -0/+1My state & local police weren't involved in COINTELPRO or blackmailing half of Washington for decades, so I trust them more.
- diggopolous, on 10/15/2009, -1/+1maybe so, but his keyboard still smeelled like teen spirit.
- DiggMeUpPlz, on 10/15/2009, -1/+1State...??
