- toomuchgreentea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I was reading the article fondly until I reached this line:
"Our Best Buy, Symantec's suite, performed consistently across our tests."
Then I realize this isn't a true evaluation, this is an AD.
If you just want the summary, go here. Hope you don't get disappointed when you see the list.
http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,125857,00.asp - Rover98, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5As soon as I saw Symantec, Macafee, I knew this was a completely bogus test and especially a completely biased article.
The worse software I have ever dealt with was winners number 1 and number 2 - daonlyfreez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There seem to be only US based products 'tested' in this 'review'. I personally would prefer Agnitum Outpost over anything on this list. Kaspersky is missing here too. Just like Download.com, PCWorld.com apparently works so close with the marketing departments of their ad providers, that they chose the sh*ttiest suites on 1 and 2. One cannot take any of their 'reviews' seriously anyway...
- dubski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I agree an AD for sure. Symantec would be at the bottom of my list. It causes so many problems and slowwwws your system down. NOD32 is my choice for anti-virus. That and SpyBot S&D for spyware and you are set!
- nomadic11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It's a pity that PCW pushes these security suites, which tend to be resource hungry and hardly bullet-proof. Why keep the 'masses' dumb?
Better to use a combination such as: Nod32 (anti-virus; paid but worth it); Appdefend (anti-malware; free beta); Jetico (free firewall).
Ok takes a bit more time installing/setting-up, but worth the effort in the long run - diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was really surprised to see a Symantec product at #1 lol
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Symantec is not only the worst AV but the worst software I ever encountered. I can't even uninstall their *****, one of their files "vpshell.dll" can not even be deleted under safe mode. I had to download a special software just to delete their *****. I've now switched to KAV. I use a combination of these softwares: KAV for antivirus, spybot for anti-adware and zonealarm for firewall.
- piesforyou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've never had a virus sneak through using AVG or anti-vir.
- bennyboy371, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Never liked PC World's tests very much. The ones with the highest ad revenue always seem to be rated the highest when everyone else knows thats not the case.
So what would everyone here choose, Panda? - pabster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lame as *****. These 'all in one' solutions are bloatware maximus pieces of *****.
Antivirus: NOD32
Firewall: Hardware, get yourself a decent router with stateful packet inspection
Spyware/Malware: Spybot S&D
There's your 'all in one'! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2the best thing norton invented was their product removal tool. They are always #1 though in these pc world tests.
- jboi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is llame.
All these suits are just useless in any corporate environment
so u let home users pay for software that is freely available: avast, AVG, ad-aware; search & destroy ... - daonlyfreez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My 2 €cts...
Firewall: Hardware router. Agnitum Outpost Firewall (includes Lavasoft Anti-spyware), with bluetack lists (TinyBLM/Blockpost-plugin) and AGNIS list (Adblock-plugin)
Antivirus: Avira AntiVir PE resident. FProt for DOS/AVG occasionally
Antispyware: Spybot Search & Destroy resident/Spywareblaster
Other: eDexter with Hosts Manager/ZonedOut with IE-SPYAD lists
All free but the Agnitum Outpost Firewall, maybe too much for the average user, but works like a charm... - adlep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey, it looks like a lame review...
Do not trust it! - JoeSmooth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I realize most of you are computer and security experts but what about my mom? not YOUR mom, since I am sure you have her all set with Clam, AVG or maybe she's running a front-end linux terminal with Windows emulation when needed. My mom treats the computer like a tv. On, Off. Pictures of the grand kids, some web surfing, writing a letter.
Telling her to install 3 seperate products is not possible. Helping her install Norton over the phone was easy and painless.
Do I run Norton? Of course not. Do I feel like supporting the many of computer users in the family? No freaking way. - Sacrifice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, I agree with the majority. Norton is indeed horrible.
- dubski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is one thing they got right. Symantecs virus removal tools are the greatest. They also don't require you to purchase any of their products. So far..
- klbclem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Symantec is very sparatic with it's creation of NIS, some years they are fantastic some years they are crap. There antispyware/malware is not as good a Webroot's Spysweeper imo but at least this years Antivirus and firewall is good.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1IMO closed source protecting closed source is like putting lipstick on a pig.
Switch to an open source OS and stop paying for software you can't see the source of. - haxx4, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I use Gentoo, how does this affect me?
- Reliant, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I have found that even using free software such as AVG causes problems. When they first came out I used it religiously. Now I'm finding that their updates are unreliable. I switched to Nod32 and I'm trying not to sound like a testimonial or a commercial. But I heard an ad for it, tried it, and have never had a virus sneak through. The moral of the story is, sometimes free is always what its cut out to be.
- culbeda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To echo the sentiment expressed earlier... PCWorld is PCWorthless. Their "reviews" are heavily biased and seem to lack much actual testing.
And, I have yet to find a security suite that doesn't suck rocks. Software firewalls are a pain and cause more problems than they solve. They should only be used when using public wireless or whenever a hardware firewall isn't available.
Ideal (home) recommendations:
Firewall: Hardware with a minimum of SPI and preferably some form of Intrusion Prevention.
AV: Trend Micro (Cheaper and better than Symantec, IMHO)
AS: Webroot. Their home product has been STELLAR at detecting removing spyware that every other product failed to even catch. I've had to fall back to in when the others fail me.
I've tried most of the free ones and frankly, I've been unimpressed with them as products overall. They work, but the extra features of the pay solutions are typically worth the money. (If you can afford them, of course.) - 123Mercy, on 01/28/2009, -0/+0Protection for your computer.
Search-and-destroy Antispyware is one of the best options available when you are searching for protection for your computer that you can trust. I know because I have tried many different types of scans in the past and the biggest difference I have found between them is the price. I found the antispyware solution from Search-and-destroy to be a great option that is affordable and easy to use. Visit http://www.Search-and-destroy.com to learn more about this scan and what it can do for you. If you are like me, you will be glad that you took the time to check it out. - ting, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ridiculous.
- pmcdonald, on 09/05/2008, -0/+0I use Spyware Doctor and have for over 2 years and it has kept my computer spyware free.
http://www.thebestspywareremovers.com/Spyware-Doct ... - Nevi, on 06/27/2008, -0/+0After I have got a router with hardware firewall,I go with Esets SmartSuite.I has not let me down yet.The sole reason, its the light footprint, but also that the Antivirus/Antispyware is so good as it is.If I had no router,I would probably use NOD32 with Online Armor retail.THATS a firewall.
- delabeaux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OMFG... yeah, Norton and McAfee suck, but Zone Alarm's antivirus and antispyware suck too... Like everyone here has said, a hodgepodge of programs are better than any one suite. Here's a suggesion, PC World pumps up BitDefender as 'the best AV program ever'. Save yourself frequent crashes and super slow loading times by not downloading it :)
My opinion of superior products:
firewalls: zone alarm, kapersky, outpost Hardware router firewall prot if you've got it.
AV: panda soft, f-secure
antispyware: ad-aware, spybot, spysweeper. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"I've tried most of the free ones and frankly, I've been unimpressed with them as products overall. They work, but the extra features of the pay solutions are typically worth the money"
But have you tried Linux (free) and iptables (free) or OpenBSD? (also free) - Kupotek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ive tried all the suites and found them all wanting.
The last one i tried was ZSA. Zone Alarm Suite wouldn't know a virus if you drove a truck shaped virus on top of it's foot. It's awful with VBS and the firewall is as confused as a kitten lost somewhere between fishbowl and milk dish. - randal2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0#1 symantec, does this also take into account it's rootkit and exploits?
- p9s50W5k4GUD2c6, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4I like the ~concept~ of security suite packages. But they simply do not fill the advertised need.
We still have to rely on a patch-quilt of best of breed security apps to cover the firewall, IDS, anti-virus, mal-ware, spy-ware, ad-ware, keylogger and root-kit threats that are coming at every pc/box.
And even then we need to use a multi-layered approach to most of the above threats because of the relative degrees of scan accuracy each tool provides on each class of threat.
I spend a good deal of personal coin on security. What I have seen to date from most of the major players is piss poor.
There is a GREAT case to be made for a freeware set of tools for layered security. - wayjer, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Stay away from pron!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Crap.
Symantecs products are worst of the pack. For gods sake, you cant even un-install their products. Norton is a huge resource hog.
And where is kaspersky ? KAV is undisputedly the best AV in terms of detection.
Anyway, its better to go for individual products rather than a security suite.
For eg. while Kaspersky's AV is the best, it's firewall and antispam are sloppy ( average at best ).
On the otherhand Zone Alarm's Firewall is good but the AV performs poorly.
