- gezick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2you know, for something that doesn't use javascript... it sure uses a lot of javascript
- marning2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2But it certainly appear to do what AJAX does, as far as I can see in a quite browse.
- iTorrey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The summary and title are a bit inacurate.
It uses javascript but you don't have to expose yourself to it. You can use their markup language to make webapps that use 'ajax' without actually programming any of the javascript.
I personally think it's a nice idea but have zero desire to use a markup language that produces markup its self. - legbend, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm going to develop an AJAX-framework that's not Asynchronous and has nothing to do with Javascript or XML.
- cosmotic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Java is not slow, and Swing does not suck. Have any of you Java or Swing bashers ever used Java or Swing? Java would beat JavaScript any day, it beats C++ in many cases. Lets see, an optimized-on-thefly compiled program, or a program written in an interpreted language that is never compiled to native code... hmm....
- kickarse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is a really good site. Very useful info and scripting.

- splasho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think it must be saying you don't need to know any Javascript to use it, because http://www.potix.com/zkdemo/zkau/web/js/zk/html/boot.js has a lot of Javascript..
- rodball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is it possible to get cancer from looking at a website?
- equusdc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Currently, we support only browsers with decent support of DOM and JavaScript."
Uhhhh...
"Why XUL? Why not Swing?"
Okay, now that's just a big, fat, W.T.F.? If I had a developer ask me why we're not doing a freakin' website in SWING, they wouldn't be fired, they'd be shot. - Xepo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Note people: This is AJAX. It has to contact the server for every little thing it does for the demos. This is to show you its capabilities. Also note: It's currently under the digg effect. I'd doubt very strongly that the actual product is this slow.
The overall look of it is very professional, ncie looking, and the source code required is quite small and self-explanatory. I'm impressed.
@cosmotic: Yes, java is going to be faster than javascript. But you're pushing it by saying that java is faster than C++. This will likely never happen, assuming you've implemented the *same* algorithm under both languages. - kertap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"If I had a developer ask me why we're not doing a freakin' website in SWING, they wouldn't be fired, they'd be shot."
Best comment ever - ob7ect, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1>why, oh why does everyone use marketing terms to describe something thats been around since 1997?
Ug...If you must know: For the same reason that developers talk in terms of design patterns (decorator, facade, proxy, etc) -- because it's clear, concise, and is easier to communicate than "Using XMLHttpRequest to send XML requests to the server-tier which in turn responds with data to be processed by the client, within the browser alongside other events."
Why, what do YOU call it? - a1programmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it uses javascript.
- debtman7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0From the homepage:
ZK is an open-source Web framework that enables rich UI for Web applications with no JavaScript and little programming.
From the FAQ:
Does ZK support browsers without JavaScript?
Currently, we support only browsers with decent support of DOM and JavaScript. However, more and more devices, say smart phones, are packed with J2ME, and many of them only have a lame browser. Thanks to the architecture advantage, a J2ME edition or similar could be ported in the future, such that your applications remain intact.
Hmmmm.... - lane.montgomery, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@legbend
I think some one beat you to it:
http://www.w3.org/MarkUp/ - fungifred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0legbend: Hopefully, you will leave in the And part of Asynchronous Javascript And XML
- micsco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Slow, and to really understant it you still need javascript knowledge.
Has potential though. - dude3609, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Its not AJAX if it has no javascript.
- bpoppe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"but this is the worst website i ever seen in my live."
Gosh Napoleon, like anyone could even know that. - wonderbud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why, oh why does everyone use marketing terms to describe something thats been around since 1997?
anyone ever use outlook web access? - veracon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I turned off JavaScript and it didn't work. Any ideas?
- legbend, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I think some one beat you to it:
http://www.w3.org/MarkUp/"
Noooooooo! That's it... I'm starting a search engine company instead... - actionjackson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+03 seconds to load and reload a "Hello World" application? Yikes!
- lo0ol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I want to check this out, but it appears to be Digg-fubared (at least the demo and a few other parts of the site). I'll check it out tomorrow then I guess.
- aconbere, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0okay... no one is reading, for the love of god. Yes it uses java-script, yes it's asynchronous to a java backbone (just like you might use php, or lisp, or hell c++). What he's built is a markup language that allows everyday users to build ajaxy pages that do nifty things without the user needing to know Java-script. He's built an abstraction layer for Ajax pages.
/me ends rant. - jnorris441, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I want 80 activex control and Java marquees and a dancing Jesus. Can you help?
- PantlessMaytr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is troubled with the same issues that a lot of Web 2.0 has - slow response time.
- PantlessMaytr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I take that back - might just be the server. The whole place is moving at the speed of a turtle.
- cody666, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"ZK is an event-driven, XUL-based, Ajax-embedded, all JAVA framework to enable Web apps the rich user experiences."
So, no Javascript, but you have to be running Java.
Nothing like a homepage full of PDFs - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what's with the pdfs
- Mentalist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would have digged it... I can forgive that it is slow, because, it is probably being digg'd to death, but, it didn't work in Firefox 1.5.
- elroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0XUL without javascript. HAAHAHAHHAAH oh that's funny.
- Smily, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Kinda slow :)
- elroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oh okay i see -- this isn't mozilla XUL. wow, suckage. anyway, why is this any different than thinlet or flex?
- madeingermany, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0all the links are in pdf - I hate that!
pdf is fine for printing, but for all else it just sucks compared to html. - TedCHoward, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They claim to bring the desktop programming model to web applications, but who here programs for the desktop in a markup language?
- kertap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They obviosly need a tool to produce there mark up which produces more mark up
- dkleehammer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My pants just fell.
- SaciPerere, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0XAML !
- easterlingman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think the guy who maintains that site doesn't know the difference between javascript and java..
- Mentalist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That, and they need to restart their server. Their Tomcat just gave an out of memory error... out of heap space.
- superrcat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've had more fun browsing the web on my cell phone.
- clocktower, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So the idea here is that learning an existing language is hard, but learning their proprietary language is easy?
- jupo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If this relies on the XUL technology then it can't expect to reach widespread use until XUL itself reaches penetrations levels such as that of Flash, Java Applets and basically whatever modern versions of IE support at the current point in time.
The concept of generating AJAX behaviours from markup is an excellent idea allowing for non-programmers to implement dynamic functionality, but from what I have seen the backbase.com framework is much further advanced in this arena. - chicwalk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I guess it was dugg to dead. I try the demo and it works well now. The demo even allows you to change the demo source on line. I am impressed. Their "No Javascript" apparently means no programming in Javascript is needed. Cool! I will make it a try.
- slipjack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting concept, not sure if it's usable yet.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Reminds me a LOT of Macromedia Flex. Or Laszlo.
- zamolx3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0slow as hell
- Fraize, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0No digg. Too slow.
