- doshindude, on 12/04/2007, -24/+46I think they should fix the memory leak first.
- ToastPop, on 04/17/2009, -3/+21That's what competing companies do -- compete to make their own better versions of things.
- kleedrac, on 12/04/2007, -1/+17http://www.google.com/tools/firefox/browsersync/ - learn it ... love it ... thank ye oh great google gods
- voyvf, on 12/04/2007, -2/+18I've not had any problems in the 3.0 nightly builds.
- bbtrev, on 12/04/2007, -3/+18Google Browser Sync has changed my life! No more backing up bookmarks.htm, no more trying to remember saved passwords after a rebuild. It is like a dream :-)
http://www.google.com/tools/firefox/browsersync/ - postalblowfish7, on 12/04/2007, -1/+14isn't this what "Web 3.0" is supposed to be? all websites pulling personal data from one source?
- taskforce, on 12/04/2007, -6/+16Aside from the fact that they're blatantly copying Opera Link, it seems like this function should be left to extension developers. I use Firefox because I want a lightweight browser, but this just seems like it's going to add yet more bloat. This is exactly the reason that I switched to Firefox in the first place, because this kind of niche stuff was supposed to be delegated to Extension writers.
Time to check out Opera again I think. - spyrochaete, on 12/04/2007, -1/+11I've been using Firefox Extension Backup Extension (aka FEBE) for a while to do something similar. It's a great addon that compiles your profile, history, cookies, passwords, extensions, themes, and more all into one compact file that can easily be restored on as many other Firefox installations as you wish. I back all this stuff up with 1 or 2 clicks every month and gmail it to myself.

- gopanthers, on 12/04/2007, -2/+8Google Browser Sync is slow and constantly screwing up (locking you out of your own profile). Highly recommend Foxmarks instead (bookmarks only). http://www.foxmarks.com/
- TheWindBlows, on 12/04/2007, -1/+6they took care of those uses about 10% less resources than IE even...
- gmillerd, on 12/04/2007, -0/+5Lol, by IE9 no problems will exist? It will take that long for M$ to restructure W3O?
- inactive, on 12/04/2007, -2/+7I see FF is going to keep adding services without first fixing what they have first, sure sounds like MS.
OK, you may now bury the truth. - mooninite, on 12/04/2007, -0/+4Or in Linux:
tar zcf firefoxbackup.tgz ~/.mozilla
Done. - dpmcalli, on 12/04/2007, -0/+4I just use google browser sync. Backs it all up to googles servers and sycronises it to all your installations whenever theres a change. Possibly the most useful extension out there with the exception of adblock+
- bffoley, on 12/04/2007, -5/+9New for Firefox or new for Mozilla? Its annoying when people use the two interchangeably
- inactive, on 12/04/2007, -1/+5Define "Web 2.0" first...
- Hexxagonal, on 12/04/2007, -0/+4Web 3.0 is diagonal backgrounds and blink tags
- Hexxagonal, on 12/04/2007, -0/+4Opera Link is available in the Opera Mini 4 already.
- FyberOptic, on 12/04/2007, -3/+6lol stealing from Opera before the feature is out of beta yet. Mozilla = Microsoft now for sure.
- BrokenVisage, on 12/04/2007, -1/+4Ditto, I use Foxmarks and love it. Google's browsersync is antiquated trash now.
- startleman, on 12/04/2007, -3/+5Not sure who's idea it was first (but considering the track record for browser innovation I'd guess it was Opera's), but Opera will be getting this too in 9.50:
http://www.opera.com/products/link/ - Hexxagonal, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2Not that that's anything new... there's only a handful of features Firefox has had before Opera.
- daveisfera, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2It used to be cool, but I don't even know if it works anymore, because it hasn't been syncing for me lately and it appears that several others are having the same problem in the support group ( http://groups.google.com/group/Google-Firefox-Exte ... ).
- JohnM5, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2what do you mean? The profile folder can easily be moved from one platform to another.
- TheWindBlows, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1you can do that without an add-on.
Documents and Settings$CurrentUser%AppData%Mozilla
archive (zip,rar,7z) the firefox folder and bam problem solved. - walter909, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1theres already the yoono extension that can sync favorites between computers
its pretty useful everyone should try it - capiCrimm, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1your logic depends on the standards to stop evolving. As long as Microsoft consistently drags their feet at implementing standards there will always be room for Firefox/Opera/etc.
http://www.sitepoint.com/blogs/2007/11/22/in-all-f ...
and from what I remember they made up their own non-standard version of SVG. As soon as the competition leaves, MSFT stops and competition is needed again. - init100, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1It still works, at least for me.
- phoenixp3k, on 12/11/2007, -0/+1Opera Link ripoff?
- inactive, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1I like it.
- irtsy, on 12/04/2007, -4/+5What's next for firefox? - Not crashing every ten seconds.
- guinnessstout, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1Foxmarks has been a life saver many times.
- McVador, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1The largest advantage of Firefox is simply that it is NOT Internet Explorer. Most hacks and viruses target the most popular browser, IE,for obvious reasons. Since Firefox is the underdog (I think they can still be considered the underdog), hackers and virus makers aren't as likely to spend time trying to bust it up.
- BlaenkDenum, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1I don't see what the problem with extensions on multiple problems is, as extensions for FireFox are designed to be crossplatform. I'm using ntfs-3g on my Linux partition and after my windows partition is mounted, I do a system link to my Window's bookmarks.html file and my extensions folder, and everything works perfectly, all I have to do is enable them.
- designet, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1he doesnt actually say that this is for firefox ANYWHERE in this article.
the closest he gets is : "build a extensible architecture like Firefox"
...i repeat...
build a extensible architecture LIKE Firefox
in other words, make a new app or plugin based system like firefox. - JohnM5, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1I'm pretty sure they aren't adding this to firefox. Since this is from Mozilla Labs it would likely be an extension. Stop trying to find a reason to complain about firefox bloat.
- cafman, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Firefox should add an option to mute sites that I have not approved. Like pop-up blocker for sound.
- init100, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1Depends on the encryption used, and the key length. I don't know what GBS uses though.
- speerross, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1I can't wait
- init100, on 12/04/2007, -1/+2"Aside from the fact that they're blatantly copying Opera Link"
Are you sure that Opera themselves did not "blatantly copy" Google Browser Sync? - Firehed, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1Unfortunately, neither that nor the extension handles cross-platform backups too well, particularly when it comes to extensions.
- fkr3, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Yeah, we're still waiting to get our memory leaks and profile corruption. Wish the Opera guys'd hurry up on that : (
lol. - jlungu, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1As per the Patriot Act, how long before the NSA gets access to this information?
- Lightspeed2, on 12/04/2007, -1/+2so basically copying microsoft's services, but in a worse way.
- Darkhacker, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1Opera is pretty nice with system resources but it also has a bad habit of throwing everything and the kitchen sink into the browser. The Presto rendering engine is amazing, but the browser has way too much junk I'll never need, a bajilliion buttons, and confusing settings dialogs.
- designet, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1exactly. this isnt a firefox story at all....looks like the writer of the piece doesnt know the difference. Misleading headline, buried
- Hexxagonal, on 12/04/2007, -1/+1my opera has 7 buttons rewind, back, forward, fast forward, refresh, wand, page rank.
my firefox has 5 back, forward, refresh, stop, home - mhmdkhamis, on 03/05/2008, -0/+0Aside from the fact that they're blatantly copying Opera Link, it seems like this function should be left to extension developers. http://game.paramegsoft.com/ - designet, on 12/04/2007, -0/+0what? the Focus is made by Ford, does that mean if they talk about a new driving system we can all assume it will be on the Focus? No , of course not. It could be on the Modeo, the F150, the Mustang....or an entirely new thing....
Similarly, Mozilla are responsible for several projects and the ONLY reference to firefox made in this whole interview is the last line saying the web system should be "extensible, like firefox"....NOT THAT IT WOULD BE FIREFOX, but that it should have 1 of the same features AS firefox. Its totally not a firefox feature. The person who wrote the headline and the intro says its firefox, but thats only to grab headlines -
