- herkalees, on 05/14/2009, -0/+1An abbreviation is when you use the first letter of a few words. An acronym, being a type of abbreviation, is when those letters form their own word. For example, SCUBA is actually said as it's read, rather than S. C. U. B. A. Same with NATO. FTP, however, has people saying each individual letter. Therefor, it's an abbreviation, not an acronym.
