- jonathanbull, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16I think it's something to do with trains.
- cinnix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7To the best of my understanding, its a web based formatting toolbar, like you would see in Google Spreadsheets or Wordpress. The difference is (if this is one) that it is developed in Rails, in my eyes reinventing the wheel. But what do I know, I'm not a Rails developer. Why am I even reading this article?
- rocketnick, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14raise your hand if you have no idea wtf this article is about
*raises hand - deansfurniture5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Textile is a markup language that makes it easier to create web documents, as you don't need to know HTML: http://textism.com/tools/textile/
This tool just makes it easier to use Textile. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's about a component that lets Rails software developers easily wrap their websites' text fields with a fancypants editor that understands wiki syntax.
Not interesting if you're not a Rails developer. - ihaveplans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There's a nice Textile cheat sheet here for those who want the plain text form: http://hobix.com/textile/quick.html
- thoand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Congcrats!
Support multiple browser vendors is a plus.
Maybe I am missing something here, but there are realy nothing special about this? - snotrokit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4IANA Ruby On Rails Dev, but it a very cool application framework for web based apps. Lighter and faster than Java, and a much less steep learning curve that Java or other frameworks. Once again, correct me if I am wrong.

The chief cook and bottle washer of ROR and his company have some super cool apps http://www.37signals.com/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Agreed, as it's not "WYSIWYG" at all it's not impressive. You can find these types of editors on tons of sites as well as being provided in most forum software.
I wrote one of these types of editors for BBCode ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bbcode ) quite a while ago (Four years ago if I remember correctly). All it takes is about 200 lines of JavaScript, a form with a couple of buttons and you are good to go. - CuLT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The user base broadened. Remember guys, you're cool when you don't know things. Boast about your lack of knowledge rather than trying to expand the boundaries of it.
- gusx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3There used to be lots of Ruby/Rails articles on digg and everyone would debate about it. Now it seems like most people are ignorant and leaving stupid comments.
What went wrong? - meshman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The best I can figure is that it's software that alters linnens and pillow cases. I'd like to know how they do that, unless it's hooked up to a sewing machine.
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4raise your hand if you think everything on digg is for you...
still got your hand up I see. - dmolsen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Lazaryn
You're exactly right, it isn't all that special from a technical standpoint. I was very surprised that I couldn't find anything similar before starting on the project. Only v0.1 so we'll see where it goes from here. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It edits fabrics?
Actually, wikipedia says:
Textile is a lightweight markup language originally developed by Dean Allen and billed as a "humane Web text generator".
Stupid name for a language, imo. Oh well, no one asked me. - seangeo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow! Judging by the comments here, digg users have really gotten stupid(er).
At least decent, intelligent discussions occur on Slashdot occasionally. - kevinbowen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice. This might be useful for a site I help maintain. Our site runs a ruby on rails application called Radiant (http://radiantcms.org ) and we have several users who have been asking for a WYSIWIG interface for posting content.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1null
- ephogy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This would be much more impressive if it was WYSIWYG.
a TextArea with specific tags to indicate the start and end of some markup doesn't seem very special, especially since it doesn't understand embedded formats. It's a nice start, but perhaps using the DOM tree would be more... interesting. Maybe a few events like keydown and keyup. Pull out some JavaScript. - stalky14, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I think it lets you change the prints on your towels while they're hanging on the rail in your bathroom.
- munky100, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3From what I can gather its just a Javascript WYSIWYG that can be intergrated quickly using Ruby on Rails.
- Barryke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I for one do know the programming language ror (Ruby on Rails)
.. but when reading the title I stil thought of a terrain / traintrack WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor.
And the word "textile" made me think of a newisch hextile / texture something. - indorock, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Rails is teh leet!!1!
(lame comedy i know, feel free to bury me to the depths of hell) - RWVolkl158, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3People finally realized that RoR is (mostly) a fad language. Use what you like and what's best for the job, but don't force feed it to people as the greatest thing ever since ever.
- Steffmannen, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2@barryke
RoR is not a programming language
so I guess you meant you DON'T know it - notsleepy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@rwvolkl158
