I'm sorry it had to come to that, but now that I have your attention... - S1ngular1ty1, on 10/12/2007, -7/+81I prefer visualizing pi as π = circumference / diameter

- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+61The top ln(e^10) reasons why e pwns pi:
http://www.pen.k12.va.us/Div/Winchester/jhhs/math/humor/epi.html
10) e is easier to spell than pi.
9) pi ~= 3.14 while e ~=2.718281828459045.
8) The character for e can be found on a keyboard, but pi sure can't.
7) Everybody fights for their piece of the pie.
6) ln(pi^1) is a really nasty number, but ln(e^1) = 1.
5) e is used in calculus while pi is used in baby geometry.
4) 'e' is the most commonly picked vowel in Wheel of Fortune.
3) e stands for Euler's Number, pi doesn't stand for squat.
2) You don't need to know Greek to be able to use e.
1) You can't confuse e with a food product. - NanoStuff, on 10/12/2007, -9/+60"PI IS EXACTLY THREE!

Did noone else catch this obscure Simpsons reference? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+48What do you mean we can't imagine it. The very fact that we have a word to conceptualize it means that we can.

- error792, on 10/12/2007, -1/+39Why does π get all the attention? What about e? In my opinion, Euler's Formula makes e pwn π.
- kingkilr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38e is cool, but pi has this sorta aura, you learn it as a kid and you still don't really know what it is . . . i dunno it also tastes good

Radians > Degrees - manixrock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17The Absurdity of Calculating Pi to Trillions of Digits:
"If one were to find the circumference of a circle the size of the known universe, requiring that the circumference be accurate to within the radius of one proton only 39 decimal places of Pi would be necessary."
Think about that the next time you visit a site boasting 5 trillion decimals for PI :) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22As a 4th year mathematics student I don't understand the obsession with all these constants to be honest.

Pi to one MILLION decimal places - opiniastrous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@D3Koy.
On a related note, no-one here cares about myspace. It's just about as close as you can get to physically recreating faeces in digital form.
Secondly, you clearly just stole that animation from the guy who made it (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:John_Reid) and then made out as if you'd had it on your myspace page before that. WHAT A ***** HACK! I couldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9These rational approximations you guys have listed above are just convergents of the continued fraction expansion of pi.
The good thing about the convergents is that they provide the "best" approximation. What exactly does "best" mean? This is essentially saying that to get closer to the irrational than the given convergent, we need to make the denominator larger than the denominator of the convergent, i.e. the rational needs to be more complex than the convergent. In other words, the convergents p_n/q_n give the best possible approximation to an irrational number out of all the rationals
whose complexity does not exceed q_n.
The convergents also converge to the irrational quite rapidly. Here are the first few convergents of pi.
3, 22/7, 333/106, 355/113, 103993/33012, etc.
you can show that if A is the irrational number. and p_n/q_n the nth convergent. Then |A- (p_n/q_n)| < 1/(q_n)^2.
you can also show a stronger result that for any two consecutive convergents at least one satisfies |A-p_n/q_n| < 1/[2(q_n)^2]. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13@Software2

Take a class in abstract algebra or topology or any other proof-based mathematics topic and you'll probably stop getting into pissing contests on the internet over how smart you are for taking calculus, because you'll realize that a retarded monkey can pass a calculus class. - marcan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@chrisxkelley

Not true that Pi has no simple way of being calculated. There are plenty of ways of expanding Pi as infinite series, each more wonderful than the next. And some of these are fairly simple expansions, e.g. those found by Gregory and Leibniz. See http://mathworld.wolfram.com/PiFormulas.html - daofma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5pie is 8.53973423
