- Joe091, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I seriously can't stand the term "mash-up." It just sounds so... stupid.
- WOTEugene, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It crashed safari for me once, too, but only when I used the enter button when clicking search... when I clicked search with the mouse it worked fine... weird I know.
- Finklestein, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Ha? That site just searches craigslist and ebay... What are you talking about? That site's really cool, don't have to scroll through 100 pages of CL links anymore to find stuff.
- Rousterfar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5They need more of the sub-categories that Craigslist has. I have been using Craigslist to help me search for a room for rent in a Condo and the best I can do is search the word "condo" on this site. That returns way too many unrelated search results. Craigslist has a sub-category for rooms for rent that makes my search much easier.
A great idea, but unless I am missing some features it still needs work. - algorythm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3why dont people just link to the actual site and not to blog spam sites...
- dopesick, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6You guys are aware that ebay DOES have a "items near me" option for search right?
- DeadPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think ps3seeker.com uses this to find the PS3's in stock near you.
Nice thanks for the link. - DalekoProvidek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Didn't find a specific item that I put on Craig's List last week. Wonder why?
- rcran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I use listpic... But that is so much better, mostly because it can search craigslist AND ebay.
- rcran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That was not a blog spam site. That was a site that specializes in so called 'mashups'. I for one find it handy to be able to discover two links at once.
- WOTEugene, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A few people, apparently...
- WOTEugene, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What I don't understand is, why does it bother you so much? Jealousy?
The feedback I've gotten for BNB and the ps3seeker site has been quite stellar. It's not like I'm trying to spam the world with "GET A FREE PS3!!!" e-mails. I could show you at least 15 different e-mails I've gotten of people praising the wii seeker site and how the inventory listing data helped them find a wii/ps3.
Case in point: http://lifehacker.com/software/mashup/find-a-deal-with-wiiseeker-220604.php
So... what exactly is your problem? And why don't you man up and post from your "real" account, Mr. Alias? Or were you born without a pair? - chip0wa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2hmm crashed safari. any other safari users get it to work?
- chip0wa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hm just tried that and you are correct. so weird.
- selfpromotr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well it certainly doesn't hurt that you keep submitting them for your own benefit just in case digg missed them!
You lack humility and tact.
And yes, this is an alias. - kolbygoodman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you want to find places for rent try : housingmaps.com
It's a pretty cool Google Maps x Craiglist mash-up - Tricky, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8Safari sucks. Firefox FTW.
- WOTEugene, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"It's more likely that you'll just adopt an alias now rather than digg your own stuff under this nickname." - how ironic, considering that you didn't even have the balls to attack me from your actual account, but rather made an alias yourself. See, the great part about digg is that it's actually quite impossible to "promote yourself" since everything is actually promoted by the community - and if people didn't like any of my projects, well, then they wouldn't have gotten promoted now, would they?
Ans gigoit is over-engineered, overcomplicated clutter which is just a glorified link farm. - WOTEugene, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well, I'm quite flattered that you took all this time to do some research on me, and have demonstrated an amazing aptitude for being able to use Google. Even found my pic from this article http://www.nu-news.com/media/storage/paper600/news/2005/02/02/News/Set-In.Stone-849248.shtml.
To answer your questions. 1) No. 2) No. 3) About 23 seconds.
I do have some questions for you though... In the last what have you accomplished that you're actually proud of? And no, the ability to rub one out in 10 seconds doesn't count. - unknownunknowns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well it used to refer to mixing two video or audio sources to make something new, like The Grey Album by DJ Dangermouse.
Now, apparently, it refers to any two things put together.
Dude, I'm about to go eat a peanut butter and jelly mashup. Yeah...that sounds gross.
edit: this is kinda interesting http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mashup - selfpromotr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm very satisfied with what I've accomplished, and I'm glad you took the time to respond in a mature, intelligent way. It goes to my point; I think you should feel dirty. It's sort of sad. It's more likely that you'll just adopt an alias now rather than digg your own stuff under this nickname. What's next for relevancy on digg, GroupRider.com? Are you a rice rocket guy? You don't seem like a Ducati guy.
This community is about relevance discovered by the community, and while the uber-2.0 mashup (vomit on popular terms) is interesting, certainly you were well enough compensated by getting ps3seeker.com dugg to spare us all the repeated digging of your own work. Please don't try to masquerade behind a transparent nickname on here and say "the guys over at just did this! how cool!" when it's you. Someone might see through it, and spend all of one minute figuring out who you are, where you are, etc. It will be seen that you're not doing the right thing.
jkramlich has provided us with a link to a site that does what you're doing without the obvious ebay API work and, while it's still in beta, it looks more relevant.
http://www.gigoit.org
What a cool idea. And it's not even mine!
Funny how his stuff keeps getting the thumbs down, though. - WOTEugene, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The reasons for zip code inaccuracy are to do with google's geolocating - it's only ass accurate as google. Try an adjoining zip code or a city, state combo if your zip code isn't working well.
The reason for the "clumping" is because the listings are only approximated by zip code - if a lot of stuff is listed from the same zip code, then it will be clumped - which often happens with large metropolitan areas. - Finklestein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1WOT: don't feed the trolls ; )
Good luck with your site - dvdmon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This site has potential, but something seems broken. I tried searching on my area code, 22180 (Vienna, VA), and specified 25 miles or less, but got results out more than 100 miles. Plus, the results seem odd. It's not a random assortment of ebay and craigs list stuff throughout the map as it should be, but rather, a big cluster of ebay stuff in Vienna, more eBay stuff south and north of me, then finally way up in Baltimore there is ONLY craig's list stuff and no ebay at all. Then, outside the DC Baltimore area, for some reason we see a some ebay items way up around York, PA, but nothing anywhere else (outside of the DC-Baltimore area).
What did I search for? "Bluetooth headset." I then went to washingtondc.craigslist.com and searched for the same thing and got tons of hist in DC and Virginia. I think this thing just doesn't look at all the Craigs List sites. Needs some work! - bigheadshark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you're right... tre cool. esp like the craigslist help.. SAVES ALOTTA TIME...and looks like the store inventory info is posted by other users/i'd call the stores first if u try to get one that way
- mookiemookie, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Not to mention the term "mash up"
ZOMG AWESOME WEB 2.0 SANDWICH!!!11 l33t PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY MASHUP!!!11 - selfpromotr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Check WOTEugene's history. http://www.digg.com/users/WOTEugene/dugg. Then do a whois search on 'bidnearby.com' and 'ps3seeker.com.' You can use http://whois.domaintools.com/bidnearby.com If you look, you'll see a pattern.
My questions:
1) is it masturbation to digg your own sites every 6 days until they get dugg? (Diggsturbation?)
2) Do you feel dirty?
3) How long did you spend writing the l33t digg-user-bait copy for the digg? Uber-web 2.0? Too cool?
Everyone say "Hi" to Eugene! http://tinyurl.com/yxf3y4 - moconnell46, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I just liked it as another place to search.
bidnearby.com is easy and straightforward. It's all in the arrangement of variables and this seems like a variable enough search of popular local markets to be useful and helpful. Who's to complain? - MrMidi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very cool site! Thanks for the info!
- CraigslistFan, on 05/18/2008, -0/+0Just an Update: CLSearch V2.60 is available now. (Yes, it let you search on multiple craigslist cities plus picture previews of craigslist ads.)
http://www.craigslistcompanion.com/
Go give it a try. - shmee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Wow, searched a few items... saves a lot of hassle paying and waiting for shipping if you can just arrange pickup.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+9 UBER-WEB 2.0 UBER-WEB 2.0 UBER-WEB 2.0 UBER-WEB 2.0 UBER-WEB 2.0 UBER-WEB 2.0... go kill yourself.
- selfpromotr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In case you've been sitting there thinking "well that shut -him- up" all day, I have better things to do.
The full extent of the benefit I've derived from this is pointing your actions out as obviously self-serving; I have no ego attachment to associate with any handle on this site that would make me want to pull back the magic curtain and say "Ah-ha, it is I."
I'm not jealous. I think self promoting is masturbation. I think it's unfortunate that you are contributing to the pollution of the content on digg. But more than that I'm really glad I got a better sense of your character from this little chat. Being surrounded by intellectual, articulate people hasn't really rubbed off on you. When this all comes crashing down on you and you wonder what went wrong, remember your lack of humility and character. - clcompanion, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0How about giving this craigslist multi city search a try. It is free from the website http://www.craigslistcompanion.com. It has a bunch of free software add on tools for craigslist. CLSearch V2.0 is the one for multi city search.
- auctionsrchkit, on 04/08/2008, -0/+0Here's a brand new eBay / Google Maps mashup: http://www.auctionsearchkit.co.uk
It's eBay-only (doesn't include craigslist) but it is dedicated to providing a similar experience to eBay's with the addition of a map and extra user-friendly interface, a gallery of photos with item details available by hovering over. Supports advanced searches and all worldwide eBay sites too. Would appreciate any comments or suggestions...
Cheers, Steve - jkramlich, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2In the past eBay and Craiglist has shutdown mashups like this. There's a new site that has all the same basic features of bidnearby, but they keep track of all the posts on their own site and everything is free. They offer RSS feeds, google gadgets and google earth integration. The site is in testing but are expected to go live within a month.
http://www.gigoit.org - trythisathom3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Wow. You've been digging yourself for almost 2 months. What a dork.
- NeoOfTheSith, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4I'm getting sick of hearing "web 2.0"...
- 4NDr01D, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1nope
marked as lame - SlaunchaMan, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3The phrase "uber-web 2.0" makes me want to kill myself.
- kromis, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2I WOULD have dugg this yesterday, but this morning I set out for the WII with the information provided on the site that two stores would have new stock today. Needless to say, neither store had a shipment and I called to a few other branches and they didnt get shipments either.
So... it's a cool idea, but it doesnt serve much purpose if the data is incorrect. - 4NDr01D, on 10/12/2007, -14/+1so awesome it crashed safari ?
can't you just type your local city into craigslist anyway?
most mashups are pointless after seconds of use
