I guess Oracly Database did work as usual! - brbeaird, on 10/31/2009, -2/+94Oh, the irony.
- GregFD3S, on 11/01/2009, -2/+60DROP TABLE sudoku;
- CaptainPedantic, on 11/01/2009, -5/+59If you're using SQL to solve computational problems like this, you're doing it wrong.
- istoner, on 11/01/2009, -1/+39The best part about SQL is you can insert, insert, insert and then refuse to commit.
- tgc1, on 11/01/2009, -3/+29Neat. But I don't think the corporate IT department Manager is going to have an easy time selling this to the higher ups.
"But see... it solves Sudoku puzzles."
"How does this make or save us money?"
"..."
"I think you know where the door is." - wannarto, on 11/01/2009, -0/+14but you can solve Sudoku puzzle in one query!
- digggggggggg, on 11/01/2009, -2/+14you mean sudo? 'su's first argument is a user name to switch to.
- kylescousin, on 10/31/2009, -1/+12Must have gotten in an infinite recursive loop.
- techdever, on 11/01/2009, -0/+11insta-solved!
- zynasis, on 11/01/2009, -0/+10only thing that springs to mind is path finding and tree structures
- newerakb, on 11/01/2009, -0/+10I've used it myself. We had IDs undergoing translations from one ID to another. So ID1 is now ID2. One concern was cascading translations, like ID1 to ID2 on day 1, and ID2 to ID3 on day 2. In that situation, now we also need to map ID1 to ID3 in the translation table.
I solved this with recursive queries (in Teradata, not Oracle, but same concept). - Ocelot13, on 11/01/2009, -2/+10su will just switch you to superuser... sudo will perform the command as superuser.
su != sudo - firstpost, on 11/01/2009, -2/+10but `su give me a sandwich` will generate an error, because `give me a sandwich` is an illegal argument for su, so sudo is the only correct way and by the way the only correct reference to the xkcd comic.
- zynasis, on 11/01/2009, -3/+11perhaps, but how often do you actually stumble upon even a slightly complicated algorithm these days... everything has been solved and encapsulated so much that we dont even have to think about them anymore.
- colto, on 11/01/2009, -0/+7That's actually pretty addictive. Thanks.

- Hortnon, on 11/01/2009, -0/+7If you want support, yes. Just like MySQL, RedHat, Solaris, Ubuntu, and so many other "free" pieces of software out there.
And Oracle users have just as many forums and mailing lists as any of the products I mentioned, so community support is definetely an option.
Finally, if your sales guy isn't giving you a discount, you're doing it wrong. - rpgmakr, on 11/01/2009, -0/+7@johnflux: I'm sorry that your line of work still has to deal with all that :)
No, seriously. I think that what zynasis is talking about is that most of us don't have to deal with any kind of complicated algorithms most of the times. Especially in OOP. And I'm fine with that. - DaviDTC, on 11/01/2009, -3/+9meh, I like kenken more.
http://www.kenken.com/play_console.html - shinkou, on 11/02/2009, -0/+5Dugg for the nerdiness!
- rpgmakr, on 11/01/2009, -2/+6Actually, it's free ;)
- SpamHat, on 10/31/2009, -6/+10"error establishing a database connection"
Yeah, someone's server can't handle a little bit of heat :)
Ironic indeed. - falafelkiosken, on 11/01/2009, -0/+4actually you can switch to any user with su
- DaviDTC, on 11/01/2009, -0/+4Been playing it for about 6 months a couple times a week and there are still times when I get completely stumped. The people who made it says each one is solvable without guessing. Guess that means there are still little tricks that I haven't figured out yet. Oh well, keeps my mind busy.
- PinkyTheWinky, on 11/01/2009, -0/+4Low level algorithmic problems can be lots of fun... but not when your trying to solve high level problems and you suddenly have to go off into a tangent to implement a sort algorithm. An algorithm becomes a beast of it's own with bugs of it's own.

Recursive SQL: Solving Real Business Problems .." - diggaligg, on 11/01/2009, -1/+5zing!
- supersonicjim, on 11/01/2009, -2/+6It is a shame Oracle Database 11g costs $12,000 dollars for a 1 year licence.
- PinkyTheWinky, on 11/01/2009, -0/+3I would like to see an example of this feature solving a real data problem... It's cute to see something being used in a novel way but it in no way explains any concept other than the author having too much time on his/her hands.
- HigherLogic, on 11/01/2009, -2/+5http://pastebin.com/f43e9bbb6
- z1pher, on 11/01/2009, -0/+3Had I been given this as an assignment back in college, I think I would have dropped out...
- inactive, on 11/01/2009, -1/+3Implementing a tree structure on top of an SQL database seems kind of redundant, though path-finding seems plausible.
- ramiro, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2This looks like something Joe Celko would be able to concoct.
- moskrin, on 11/02/2009, -0/+21. Write SQL to solve Sudoku puzzles
2. ???
3. PROFIT! - z1pher, on 11/02/2009, -0/+2If you did any PL/SQL in your Oracle course, I feel your pain man...
- Hortnon, on 11/01/2009, -1/+3What's wrong with it?
- doomsayer, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1SQL Developer replaced SQL+ awhile back:
http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database ...
SQL+ is useful when you aren't running a GUI on your server however. - noumuon, on 11/01/2009, -1/+2kenken's far better, imo. sudoko gets stale after doing it for a couple weeks.
- Nitrodist88, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1Command should either be 'sudo make me a sandwich' or 'su -c make me a sandwich'
- strictnein, on 11/02/2009, -1/+2Correct
- negative1ne, on 11/02/2009, -0/+1yeah, me too!
i took an oracle/sql class, and it wasn't too bad..
but man, this is way beyond that! - steviesteveo, on 11/01/2009, -1/+2Which is why the next thing su expects you to do is tell it what user you'd like to be, rather than rushing straight into commands.
- WhiZa, on 11/01/2009, -1/+1mirror: http://technology.amis.nl/blog/6404/oracle-rdbms-1 ...
- dafragsta, on 11/01/2009, -3/+2No idea why you're getting buried. I got that when I followed this link as well. I thought it was pretty funny when I saw it.
- Calumk, on 11/01/2009, -3/+2hehe
- ModernGeek, on 11/01/2009, -3/+2It doesn't look l33t enough.
- joculator, on 11/01/2009, -3/+1They really need to update SQL Plus
