- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+169But why would you want to remove them? I've never seen less intrusive ads in my life.
- nullx42, on 10/11/2007, -6/+135Already dugg under "5 secrets of google" yesterday
- screamthenrun, on 10/11/2007, -6/+105i can only wonder how many diggs it will take before google changes this so they don't upset their adsense clients
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+96adblock plus...
- turpenine, on 10/11/2007, -6/+75@scream, because the entire population of digg even puts a dent in google.
- wastern, on 10/11/2007, -2/+67Google has some of the most unintrusive ads on the net. I don't even notice them and they don't really add to the load time at all. Is this really a big deal?
If the ads on the google search are what allow them to give me gmail, picasa, sketch-up, google docs, google reader, gCal, Earth, Maps, Notebook, blogger, Talk, goog411, google desktop, toolbar, page creator, etc, etc, etc for free.......then I'll gladly continue to overlook them - bpadair, on 10/11/2007, -5/+33I have not tried this so I am not sure if it works or not, however, it strikes me as curious that many of the people on here would try to remove the Google search ads, while relying on those ads to generate revenue for their own sites. Now I know that not everyone here has their own site or blog, however, alot of people do, and for any of those that do have sites, and have ads on them, to use something to bypass ads is just hypocritical.
- cozinator, on 10/11/2007, -2/+23"I kinda like the ads..."
Wow, this quote has to be in every advertising executive's wet dreams. - Kazanoe, on 10/11/2007, -1/+21This is already on the front page with 1000+ diggs, guys.
Some 5 tricks you didn't know story.
lookit that, I found a link!

- adamlaz2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16I kinda like the ads...
Comparison pics...

Boring without them... - elk1, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16I actually use the ads if i want to buy something, I was actually annoyed when adblock removed them, so i disabled that function. But i guess it's better to have the option of removing them.

1 I'm a jackass, no denying that.
2 I'm not slow, while I was typing my message, someone else posted the same thing, thats all.
3 I read the other comments, it just wasn't there when I read them
4 Your the jackass now, for assuming that I was purposely attempting to undermine someones attempt to undermine them. - computergod, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13I don't think google will care. People that want to block ads already do, this is just a neat trick.
Only way they would block it is if people posting search links on high traffic sites did it enough. - rejoined, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Dude, no point complaining. There are people who rip other people's stories out, make some minor modifications..publish a blog with ton of ads..and submit/re-submit to Digg.
It's called BlogSpam, and the word has been coined for a purpose.
But, I try not to complain about it here anymore..because lot of people don't agree with my point of view, and that is perfectly understandable by me.
The only thing I can do, is bury the story (which I did)..but I just have one single vote..so it really doesn't make a difference.
Also, a lot of Diggers probably haven't seen the original story, so I guess there's a purpose.
Happy Digging. :) - davehendrix, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9um...for blocking ads.
- Ademuth, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7@hysterix
And you get dugg down because.... See point 1 - SynergyNT, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Why not just use http://www.searchmash.com/. It's a Google project. Have to imagine it would get similar results.
http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/whois.ch?&ip=searchmash.com - darkecho, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Hrm.. Kinda ironic, they talk about blocking google Adsense, yet they have them right above and below the article. What the hell, they already made their money off of showing them, so why let other people make money too.
- a2n3d7y, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Those are the only adds on the entire web that don't annoy the crap out of me.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Who here is really bothered by those ads? This isn't that big of a deal to me
- Ridikul, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7More Effective: AdBlock Plus.
Just add these filters to AdBlock:
#table(mbEnd)
#div(tpa1)
#div(tpa2) - brundlefly76, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5First off, those arent Adsense ads, those are Adwords ads.
Adsense if the Google clickfraud program.
Second, Google does such a kickass job of insuring those ads are relevant, I actually consider them to be an relevant feature of the Google search results - why would you want to disable them? - psilanthropist, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5google doesnt give a ***** about diggers. we are probably categorised in the tech-aware community most of whom run adblockers anywyas. google is targeting the IE-using, Myspace-ing, Photobucket-ing, Youtube-ing teenager who has no idea what an adblocker is.
- Saiing, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7I agree with you. It's not like they're really intrusive anyway - the ads just appear on the right of the page, well out of the way of the main search results. I can't see the point in just doing this for the sake of it. Appending stuff to the end of a URL is more hassle than just typing a search term anyway.
- dilpil1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Might I add that the ads this blocks are quite possibly the least invasive on the internet?
- Verdanic, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Well.. technically, when viewing adsense ads on a website other than your own, it could only benefit you to disable them if you're that concerned about burning your own adsense impressions.
Oh, and yes, I know that Adblock/similar extensions do indeed count as impressions. The method this article is about disables them on Google's end, thus no impression. - rodgy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Good to know, but actually I like these non-intrusive ads, so I won't disable it.
- BenO169, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Who's got the link to the Greasemonkey script that will do this for every search?
- Chromoly, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3or you can just use blackle.com and save electricity in addition to no ads.
- konno, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3No ads = No Revenue
No Revenue = No Google - maiios, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It isn't the same though. Like it doesn't do the phonebook lookup when you search for phone numbers
- Hormelinator, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2clicks on a few ads to help google keep up, clicks on a few digg ads as well.
pepople Ads (and CLICKING on them) pay for all this stuff we use for free - metaphysical, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It's been said already and I'll say it again, these aren't AdSense ads. AdSense ads are those found on websites.
This is Adwords ad "removal". - etnu, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Blocking ads on the internet is dumb. They'll just figure out ways around it, and the "new" ways will likely be more annoying than the previous ads.
It's either free internet (ad supported), or paying for every website.
You've got to pay the bills somehow. - Zakir, on 10/11/2007, -6/+8a secret for how long now?
- binarybandit92, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I agree, I really don't have a problem with them.
They don't bug me, are unobtrusive, and don't shake and blink.
Plus, they partially fund my browsing (Gmail etc.) - Eragmus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Boring, you say? Then try the BetterSearch extension, which gives you thumbnail previews of every link.
It adds color to the page and is actually pretty functional and fast to load. - broken1812, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2These ads help a lot of small businesses out. Not to mention the fact that they are the least intrusive ads on the internet, I don't see a need or a reason to block them.
- sl4x0r, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3unfortunately it also suppresses displaying the number of hits as well as displaying any google news matches
- aritheman, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5Good point
- NGliam, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I really do not give a damn. Googles advertising methods are non-obtrusive text links that I can easily ignore without creating a greasemonkey script for it, or using this silly method. Oh well, if some of you can't stand those tiny textual advertisements.. go for it :/
- squire, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Alternatively, just use Scroogle instead (preferably via the Firefox search plug-in). That way your search history is blank too...
- nathanstarr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I am pretty sure that once you post something to Digg it is no longer a "secret."
- akatherder, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1They're actually pretty useful. For example, if you link to Budget Rental Truck's website from Google's Ads you save 5-10% and get unlimited mileage. I was going to drive a truck from MI to NC and it was $1500. I drove the truck from MI to NC, then brought it back up to WV. That saved about $800 and I didn't have to foot the bill for extra mileage (spent about $70 in gas and about 6 hours round trip though). When I went from NC back to MI, I used the truck liberally to pick up furniture and crap without worrying about every mile I drove.
If you just click on the link in the search results, you get NOTHING. You lose. Good day sir. - 0ceanic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1i think google is one of the only companies on the web that does advertising right. i for one am not going to use this at all, imo they have earned the right to show me these ads. especially considering how unobtrusive they are.
- fallenidol, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1...you could just edit the default IE styelsheet to permanently get rid of them
- sleepless, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1From Firefox (I believe Portable also):
- about:config
- look for the key "browser.search.defaulturl"
- double click and paste in "http://google.com/search?output=googleabout"
- close and restart Firefox completely
- Continue your search from the google search box without the ads - scottschiller, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1DNSKong, if you're on Win32. Does wonderful DNS filtering, eg. undesirable domains resolve to 127.0.0.1 instead of the real IP. Makes your internets faster, too. ;) http://accs-net.com/hosts/DNSKong.html
- kisore, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Why on earth would you want block Google Ad when using their service? First of all, the only source of income they have is Google Ad. If they don’t make any profit because you are searching Google without Ads, there will be no Google. I don’t think you will like that.
