I love both! - gd007, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4finally digg is on front page of reddit and reddit on digg. indeed genius.
- ajvchuk, on 10/12/2007, -17/+5pure.
- pshaw, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Oh, and it's two-function recursion: very similar to how I did alpha-beta pruning in my AI class. Very clever!
- laythesmackdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3ha ha !!
- jleedev, on 10/12/2007, -2/+62He got banned for doing this? The Digg staff have no sense of humor.
- wetelectric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15I'm sure digg employs a huge number of admins. Its probably hard to keep track of them. I think I'll write them a quick email:
"
hello
A user posted an amusing programmers recursion joke. That user has now been banned. I'm sure its just a wayward admin, but this sort of thing leaves a bad taste in the mouth if left unchecked. Maybe try an admin mod system a la slashdot?
concerned user.

- wetelectric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15I'm sure digg employs a huge number of admins. Its probably hard to keep track of them. I think I'll write them a quick email:
- jgrahamc2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21Yep, the user was banned from Digg and account disabled. Just click the submitter name above and you'll see!
- MarkByers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Why didn't they just remove the article instead of banning the user? Or maybe the guy got banned for another reason?
- kpw1179, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5GREAT SCOTT!
- wetelectric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18banned? wow sense of humour needed methinks.
- bobmatnyc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+37Unbelievable to be banned for posting that link. Who knew they were so insecure?
- bugbear, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34Digg is protective because their main advantage over reddit is that they've raised 30x as much money, which they've used to buy traffic by getting mentioned in the mainstream press. If Digg users are allowed to find out about reddit, that advantage goes away.
If Digg lets their users find out about reddit, they've effectively raised all that money for nothing.
Amusingly, the practical result of this situation is that Digg is compelled to violate what is supposedly their defining principle. Reddit can safely have links to Digg on their front page, whereas Digg must censor any story that links to reddit.
The last story linking to reddit actually made it onto the front page (and went out in the RSS feed) before it was killed. - Blazeix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25But by banning him, they are only drawing more attention to reddit!
- surian, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Oh wow... there's a site called reddit? I never would have known otherwise! And it looks as if they have a sense of humor as well... Well I'll be jiggered! I might just have to stop in there from now on!
- deadfones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@bugbear
I'm afraid to agree with you...Psyche! WTF do I care. I want to see dirtyfratboy post in this thread. You know he'll see it on reddit ;)
Hey digg, maybe instead of creating 2 breakthrough whiz-bang experimental traffic analyzers and hoping news outlets pick it up and drive even more traffic to your site, you should've fixed your ***** comment system. This whole "@" thing is so amateur bloggish it's funny. - bhagany, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What do mythological Greek god-loving women have to do with this?
- loboIAM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One thing cool about digg.com (Personally I think it's just another corporate monster like Google has become) : We're allowed to swear.
***** yeah
reddit rules - saynotocensors, on 12/07/2007, -0/+1Once the digg people find out about captain obvious they'll never need to visit digg again.
- bugbear, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34Digg is protective because their main advantage over reddit is that they've raised 30x as much money, which they've used to buy traffic by getting mentioned in the mainstream press. If Digg users are allowed to find out about reddit, that advantage goes away.
- phatmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28Great stuff. It is ridiculous that this guy got banned:
http://www.jgc.org/blog/2006/07/sense-of-humor-failure-at-digg.html - recursive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27I'm what this thread is about.
- aludwin, on 10/12/2007, -16/+3Technically, this isn't recusion.
- bhagany, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16hell if it isn't.
- bhagany, on 10/12/2007, -0/+50What the hell, Digg? Either you have programatically banned anyone who links to Reddit, or you have purposely and manually banned a guy who's only crime is making a joke. Either way, you come off as a bunch of assholes. Good one.
Here's to hoping for a backlash.- PJBonoVox, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4I dunno-- It's pretty boring.
- diggforecast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10This is sure done manually
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Yeah... I think it's time to use reddit now.
Digg: you're getting a time out.
- ajvchuk, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2http://ibloggedthis.com/2006/07/26/idiocy-defined-see-digg/
Idiocry defined (see digg) - GoaWest, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14BAD DIGG! No doggy treat!
- bhagany, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13This story does not come up when searching for "recursion" or "reddit". Nor is it in the programming section under upcoming stories, as it was submitted. Ugh. Jerks.
- paperhat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19Be careful. They might start banning users for commenting here...or digging this story.
- recursive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Then make them ban everyone.
- Burgerman851, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Stack overflow. Core dumped.
- recursive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Couldn't you hold it?
- adam.skinner, on 10/12/2007, -18/+9Digg is gay.
I wonder why I even bother. Flagrant abuse of power. - briantech, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14Another reason that leads me to believe Digg is run by 12 year olds.
- stevepinker2002, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15I love digg the layout is great ..But i find that reddit gets the stories faster
- NickDouglas, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Yeah, that's one reason Reddit and Digg are friends and not competitors. Unlike Netscape 2, Reddit is a completely different system than Digg. It's more like a user-run Memepool or an automatic Metafilter.
- sexburger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30I thought digg was all about "the power of the users" and "we don't have traditional editors", etc. etc.
Banning a person for submitting something is the same as an editor not posting something to their coveted site.
Digg: practice what you preach! - JakeMcMahon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+36Wow. This is *****. I'm off to reddit. See ya!
- JakeMcMahon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24Hey, Kev, could you disable this account? If you wouldn't mind. Cheers, bud.
- jasonmcaffee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Me too! by digg. I didn't realize reddit had comments(have only used rss feed).
reddit ALWAYS has the stories at least 2 hours before I see them on digg.
Oh, and it doesn't take forever to load the page.
Oh, and the rss feed points directly to the page, not to a page that takes forever to load! - furyg3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10In order do this I was going to create a submission linking to this guys blog (which would surely get my account deleted for me), but somebody already did it:
http://digg.com/tech_news/Sense_of_humor_failure_at_Digg
Who wants to wager on this one *also* not hitting the front page? ;) - Teo76, on 10/12/2007, -10/+6I don't like Reddit. They talk about politics all the time. Their site doesn't work from my PDA. They are LISP programmers. They are financed by Paul Graham, an arrogant guy that has some interesting points sometime, but that I dislike. Screw reddit!
- mongonikol, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Hooray! At last, someone can see clearly! Beautful, that banning part is the coup de grace. Excellent and good work. When digg does something like this, everyone should say THAT'S GREAT DIGG IS THE BEST! and it can mean the exact opposite.
THAT'S GREAT DIGG IS THE BEST! - felttippin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Hilarious
- ThatsUnpossible, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3He's right, this is just an infinite loop. Recursion has a procedure in place to end the recursion at some point. It's a way of solving a certain type of problem by referring to yourself again with a different set of input parameters.
- bhagany, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11As somebody on Reddit pointed out, the loop ends when Digg rips the story from the homepage. Not infinite.
- recursive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Useful recursion prevents runaway cases. That doesn't mean it's necessary to meet the definition. Infinite loops are loops that use infinite time. Infinite recursion is recursion that uses infinite time and space.
- daveboudreau, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It's been mentioned a few times before but stuff like this really makes me give reddit a longer glance. Mostly I go off of whats on popurls but I think I may visit reddit a bit more now.
- JoeLeo, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1http://www.digg.com/apple/iTunes_Tracks_The_Songs_You_Buy/
- AndWat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7FUD now = F*** U Digg. At least, until you understand that the web is about linking...
- tomgost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7i can see burying this story if you don't think it's funny, but what on earth about this makes it a bannable offense?
- rhamej, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11What a joke! Banning some one for this? See ya digg....
- tadpole256, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11This got someone banned? WTF?
- joefurious, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1This certainly wasn't funny or clever. Just waste of time. jgrahamc got exactly what he was asking for. Crap like this just clogs our tubes!
It's not a big recursive truck! - dharh, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1It's buried cause people like me buried it. Cause while you laugh at it I think its lame. Not banable. But still lame.
- hhopper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Great Digg! I hate to tell you but your competition is there whether you recognize it or not!
- johnie1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5reddit is nice (:
- polymorphist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Your recursive call doesn't have a termination condition, man :D
You want us to hop from digg to your site and back forever? :D- capiCrimm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the terminating condition is boredom.
- JulianMorrison, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nah, that's just crashing out on an exception.
- thouis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Re. bannination: I asked feedback@digg.com about this, and got a reply from support saying, "That user violated our Terms of Service" (with link to same). They have not yet told me which part of the TOS.
- thouis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1More from digg support:
"The user submitted the same exact story twice in less then 2 minutes
time. Digg users emailed us complaining that the user is spamming digg
with the same story and off-topic content. It is in violation of our
User Conduct" - jgrahamc2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1thouis,
I'm the author of the original story... would you be willing to share your emails with Digg support with me... If so could you send them to digg AT jgc DOT org.
Cheers,
John.
- thouis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1More from digg support:
- sontek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm already an avid reddit user but I'm going to stop using Digg because of this, Unless they release some comment on why he was banned.
- bowlby4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is the Popfile guy. The best spam filter I have ever used.
- JulianMorrison, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No, that would be coroutines.
For recursion, if you're not yet bored, see recursion. Otherwise, return boredom. - Talphin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1haha I tried to do this once on Digg by trying to predict what the link would be once I submitted the link. The story was going to link back to its self. I guess someone had already tried this though, cause you can't submit a link on Digg to Digg... lol
- jusb1066, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Reddit for me, thanks digg for publicising it!
Glad you can be so open minded about it all - xntrk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1oh man im stuck in an infinite loop......
