- capheine, on 11/11/2009, -2/+204Cool, I get it now.
BRB, designing Modern Warfare 3 all by myself. - gilbes, on 11/11/2009, -10/+117Oh for ***** sake this article is terrible.
- snipe123, on 11/11/2009, -16/+118Learn to program in no time = not possible unless you want to create ***** software
I once shown my girlfriend LMC language for fun it was horrible !!! - web2pointYo, on 11/11/2009, -1/+79I wish you could shown me how you type your words !!!
- specialK16, on 11/11/2009, -3/+75"no time"
Good luck with that. - mustardman24, on 11/11/2009, -2/+46Better, and more honest too:

- Takfam, on 11/11/2009, -5/+47I highly doubt the article is implying you're going to be writing your own version of Linux in a week. It's simply a jumping off point. Stop getting so defensive of programming as a hobby. Nerds.
- sanman, on 11/12/2009, -0/+41how is proggy formed?
- Krakerjax, on 11/11/2009, -3/+44Now sir, I taught myself to code. I find your lack of faith disturbing.
- tgc1, on 11/12/2009, -1/+41Programmers don't get enough credit.
- gizram84, on 11/11/2009, -8/+47You can't teach yourself how to code, that's like trying to teach yourself how to seduce a woman. You can only learn from experience.
- mkriss5681, on 11/11/2009, -3/+36I'm on the second year of a computer science degree, I get A's and I'm still a ***** noob programmer. It takes practice, like everything else. This article is terrible.
- GorfTron, on 11/12/2009, -1/+32Step 3: Eat experiment. You now have super powers.
- iamacyborg, on 11/11/2009, -1/+32This article sucks. If you want to learn programming, how about a free introductory programming course courtesy of Stanford University?
http://see.stanford.edu/see/courseinfo.aspx?coll=8 ... - dave122, on 11/11/2009, -0/+29This is true, 99% of what I know about software development I didn't learn in school.
- publiclurker, on 11/12/2009, -1/+30Same question. ;-)
- tflowholdings, on 11/12/2009, -1/+28I am a girl.
- xpose, on 11/11/2009, -2/+24You can teach yourself how to code with a book. I taught myself PHP, MySQL, and Javascript while going to college to get my History degree. Though it takes SEVERAL years to master it, and a lot of self-motivation.
- WL92, on 11/12/2009, -1/+18Dead English teachers are rolling over in their graves as we speak.
- ziplizard, on 11/11/2009, -3/+20I don't call reading a book "experience". I don't want to ride on an airplane where the pilot only had your kind of experience or be operated by a doctor with that kind of experience.
Though I would guess that Mr. Self Taught programmer did make some small programs while teaching himself, which is experience.
You can teach yourself how to code. We all can't trace our programming teacher's teaching history back to their teacher's teacher's teacher (their great-grandteacher?) being the founder of programming. - joculator, on 11/11/2009, -2/+18When are you planning to work in kissing a girl?
- gotikplage, on 11/11/2009, -1/+16*****, guys! Thanks to this article I can pass my Java final tomorrow!
- kestasjk, on 11/12/2009, -0/+13That's fine, but it's also very slow and builds bad habits. I'm not talking as a guy who took a course and is looking down his nose, but as a guy who also learned that way. It's the most fun and gives the most instant gratification, but it's also very inefficient
- valarking, on 11/12/2009, -2/+15Learn to english in no time = not possible unless you want to create ***** sentence
Seriously though, basic utility programming like creating scripts and software tools is very possible. - lostczech, on 11/11/2009, -1/+14The web will be based on silverlight technologies in 10 years? I really hope you are wrong.
- AxsToro, on 11/12/2009, -1/+13Step 5: Profit
(or rob a bank with Super powers.) - bigbadgoat, on 11/12/2009, -0/+12well at least your program knows how to keep itself busy
- domenics, on 11/11/2009, -3/+14I LOLd IRL.
Well played, sir. - stancey, on 11/12/2009, -0/+11I finished my computer science degree last year and I still like a noob sometimes.
- antdude, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1010 PRINT "HELLO WORLD!"
20 GOTO 10 - mindcrime83, on 11/12/2009, -1/+11Anyone that wants to be taken seriously and understood at the same time.
- tflowholdings, on 11/11/2009, -0/+9I taught myself how to program in Visual Basic when I was young, then I taught myself C. Then I learned Pascal. In college I learned C++ and Python. And now, I'm a Ruby on Rails developer. That's my life's journey.
- BrendanJB, on 11/12/2009, -1/+10Step 4: ?????
- stancey, on 11/12/2009, -0/+8still *feel
Omg I really am noob in life. =/ - Lith25, on 11/12/2009, -1/+9If you know enough to realize you aren't that great of a programmer, then you are probably better than 75% of developers out there.
- defwheezer, on 11/12/2009, -2/+10"Hello World"?
- guytoronto, on 11/12/2009, -2/+10I taught myself MySQL, PHP, Javascript, CSS, and HTML. All by seeking out answers in books and online resources. I was never "taught" programming. I didn't take a course.
I didn't start by learning loops, or functions, or how to use variables. I learned enough to do what I wanted to do, then pushed the limits of what I could do. Then I looked for better, more efficient ways of doing it. That is self-learning. - geoboy, on 11/12/2009, -0/+8they need to do way instain coders> who compile thier proggy
- dave122, on 11/11/2009, -6/+14and i'm sure you didn't do that reading a book (i.e. experience)
- Haax, on 11/12/2009, -0/+7Haha "I am a girl" got more diggs than the original post. There's digg for ya
- 3242130193, on 11/12/2009, -0/+7Did you use Visual Basic to create a GUI interface to track IP addresses?
- MWeather, on 11/12/2009, -0/+7HTML and CSS aren't even programming languages, let alone scripting languages.
- Krakerjax, on 11/11/2009, -2/+9To be fair, I did have some information on the subject, but with no experience to apply to it, it was still difficult :)
- thetortoise, on 11/12/2009, -2/+8I love all the 1337 programmers in here hating this article. Let me apologize on behalf of all the non-programmers who might actually get something out of this article and who didn't go to school for CS. We are dumb. /s
The advice from the article to start with desktop scripting like Autohotkey is pure gold by the way. After I started writing AHK scripts programming finally became something concrete and I expanded to other languages far more easily than my previous attempts. Good luck! - tflowholdings, on 11/12/2009, -4/+10Same answer.
- aggies11, on 11/12/2009, -0/+6Just because you are literate, does not make you a great writer. (Just being literate does not have anything to do with making a great "essay" for example).
Just knowing a programing language is the same, that just gets you into the door, it's what you do with it that's important. Good design is something much harder, and much more important. - kalikao, on 11/12/2009, -0/+6I'll buy it just because it was made by a single person.
- fack0, on 11/12/2009, -1/+7Silverlight? I hope you know Flex has a much higher reach... most people have flash installed.
