- bryanoulton, on 02/13/2009, -1/+21Plus, it's a great money maker.
- nunlover, on 02/14/2009, -1/+20you can't trust myspace pics, the way girls hold the camera way up in the air and use angles to make themselves look thinner. once you finally meet her, she got some 'splaining to do!
- rlmitchell, on 02/13/2009, -0/+19If you liked the main story you might be fascinated with "How Joe got the girl," which describes step by step how Joe used eHarmony to whittle down 500 candidates to find his one true love. It's part of the story package under the headline Details: How Joe got the girl.
The 10 step process starts with a 400 question profile, moves to various rounds of initial communication, to messaging, then teleconferencing, then - finally a date! Repeat 100 times and hope for the best. Joe found love, but Mary did not. She describes the mating dance on eHarmony is a "long job interview" that never ends.
How does that fit with other folks' experiences? Are you more like Joe - or Mary? - rideagain, on 02/14/2009, -1/+17This article is what is known as a "media hit". That is, an advertisement disguised as an article.
- derpaderp, on 02/14/2009, -1/+15Only "technology behind attraction" I have seen is in those ads that say "Find someone to f**k in 'insert city name' now!" Those ads catch my attention, but sadly don't work.
- linagee, on 02/14/2009, -5/+15eHarmony sucks. "Are you a man looking for a woman, woman looking for a man, or oh whoops, no other options."
It's run by a bunch of Christian fundamentals btw, that's why it's missing "the other options". - GTOFan350, on 02/14/2009, -2/+12Myspace is the new booty-call!
- connieLingus, on 02/14/2009, -0/+9i contracted at a semi-startup in the Chicagoland area that was basically a pre-teen eNetwork for "dating" and silly messaging, and remember LOL'ing at the "sophisticated matching algorithm" they used to find potential "dates" for the users.
they asked 25 y/n questions, and just compared who answered them the same way you did and then "ranked" your compatibility...what a complex system! - threon, on 02/14/2009, -0/+8Most of the people you are matched with are ones who signed up for a trial membership at some point and they never respond.

………………………………………………………’’~-‘’_ , , ,,’,_/--‘ - DredPir8Robrts, on 02/14/2009, -1/+8Back in November I'd just gotten out of a 9 month relationship with a woman who was the worst match I've ever dated. Yes, I know, why did it last 9 months? I think we both tried too hard to make it work. We both agreed that it probably should have ended 2-3 months in. Incidentally, we met on PoF.
Anyways, 3 weeks after we broke things off I signed on to eHarmony to see what's out there. Within a few days, they tried matching me up with my ex (!). The thing is, we are most definitely not compatible. This was NOT providence telling me to give things another chance.
I think what happens on those more complex sites is that people don't necessarily fill out information in a way that honestly reflects their personality. I'm sure that some people subconsciously consider what sort of answer would make them the most desirable. - cbeach, on 02/14/2009, -1/+8I met my girlfriend three months ago on eHarmony in my seven-day free trial period on the site. After seeing a dozen or so mediocre profiles, she came up, and was such a great match I initially thought she was fictional - a scam by eHarmony to get me to pay the subscription fee. But I got in touch with her during the free trial and luckily we managed to exchange enough info to stay in touch outside the service (therefore I didn't have to pay the frankly extortionate subscription rates). Still together now and very happy indeed.
Thought the article would be a shameless bit of marketing for eHarmony but actually it was balanced and interesting, particularly from a technical point of view. - connieLingus, on 02/14/2009, -0/+4yeah...total typo i meant "teen", not pre-teen...you had to 15 to 18 to join.
- FTLJohnson, on 02/14/2009, -1/+5note to you - if you want a free site... OKCupid is better than plentyoffish.
- diceau, on 02/14/2009, -0/+3How desperate are you two exactly?
- diceau, on 02/14/2009, -0/+3Hahahaha that's awesome.
- FTLJohnson, on 02/14/2009, -1/+4Especially considering the "matching algorithm technology" accuracy, and lack of stupidity of the other dating sites is MUCH MUCH better on OKCupid... despite the fact that is FREE.
OKCupid is the GOOGLE of Dating sites. It basically makes the competition look like they are not only years behind, but following completely backwards ideologies and business models... - Peko, on 02/14/2009, -0/+3But it was an interesting one. On one hand you get the technical dog and pony show from eHarmony (did I mention eHarmony? Here's a link to eHarmony right here) but then you get the PlentyOfFish guy saying all the eHarmony technical ***** is all crap.
It was remarkably balanced for a media hit - and by balanced I mean I wish I was in on the negotiation and editorial meetings. - coyote1284, on 02/14/2009, -1/+4I was just about to give up when I met my girl there. Most other "matches" didn't get much past the 2nd set of guided responses, and it'd take about a week to get that far. With my girlfriend now, we took about 2 days to get to the point where we were passing messages freely on the site, the next day we exchanged AIM addresses, the next we were talking on the phone, then set up a date a couple days after that.
We've been together over 4 months, and we're discussing moving in together around April. - jchennav, on 02/14/2009, -2/+5Until same-sex marriage is legalized in all states, it doesn't really make much sense for eHarmony to offer other options. eHarmony is aimed at people interested in marriage.
- lex0nyc, on 02/14/2009, -0/+3You want me to show you my what?!
- jasdf, on 02/14/2009, -0/+3Your comment is self-invalidating.
- FI5HERMAN, on 02/14/2009, -0/+3Clever marketing !!!
- linagee, on 02/14/2009, -0/+2pre-teen is a bit too old for pedobear's tastes.
- MalarkeyPN, on 02/15/2009, -0/+2I have a friend who just married a guy she met on match.com.
For some people, it definitely works. - qh4dotcom, on 02/14/2009, -3/+5I found my wife on match.com...she lied in her profile about living in Miami like I do and I had to import her from Russia....went there 8 times myself until she got her K-1 visa
- FTLJohnson, on 02/15/2009, -0/+2Ugh, stupid Digg - I thought it ATE my first comment... so I commented again... ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING...
What a douche I am.... - 6oo63D, on 02/14/2009, -0/+2Funny, i traced mine to a russian escort agency before i realized i would have been scammed. Did you quarantine her at the CDC for some time after you 'imported' her, if you know what i mean.
- BenTheTank, on 02/14/2009, -2/+4Note to self: Check out plentyoffish.com when home alone...
- clichecow, on 02/15/2009, -0/+2Having done a lot of research and development involving data mining algorithms, I can say that they are very effective and if implemented well you could definitely make a dating site that worked well. The problem is that most of the people who sign up do so because their desperate, so its more cost effective to just make a quick information-retrieval algorithm and take money from losers.
- diceau, on 02/14/2009, -0/+2Don't do it ... unless you want a story to post on digg?
- jemka, on 02/16/2009, -0/+2No I will not make out with you.
- FTLJohnson, on 02/14/2009, -1/+3Especially considering that if you look at the traffic ratings of these sites on Alexa, OKCupid's traffic is right on par with eHarmony.
The traffic rankings for the top 5 sites according to how this list is ranking "market share" is totally out of whack though.... I don't your site matters if you have a huge market share, but no one ever visits your site anymore *cough* myspace.
OKCupid blows the other sites away... and is free. - rd1010, on 02/14/2009, -0/+2Yeah I saw okcupid and tried it a little bit, maybe I will try it again at some point.. I agree with the old idealogies of the other sites, its laughable how many stupid sites there are out there just trying to make a quick buck and I think eharmony is just the epitomy of those sites, they seem to have a huge marketing budget to shove their crap down our throats with their stupid tv commercials.
- elitexero, on 02/16/2009, -0/+2Don't be so quick to judge online dating sites, I met my fiance on a dating site
- sodade, on 02/14/2009, -2/+4"Over a three-month period last fall, Joe found 500 people who appeared to fit his criteria. He initiated contact with 100 of them, corresponded with 50 and dated three before finding the right match."
He only met three in person? Over a six month period, I met 38 women in person. It was pretty draining, but I'm happily married to #38.
Once you are out of school, it is really hard to meet people "naturally" outside your "friends of a friend" circle. I really liked being able to filter people out before having to meet them in person. - BenTheTank, on 02/14/2009, -0/+1I was just kidding guys... but thanks.
- antdude, on 02/15/2009, -0/+1One print page: http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?com ...
- doctressjulia, on 02/14/2009, -1/+2***** EHarmony, it's run by conservative Xtian homophobes.
- FTLJohnson, on 02/15/2009, -0/+1POF is just pics with no real information - If I wanted to pick up women based on just looks, I'd go to a bar. If I'm going to bother with an online dating site... I want to get as much information as possible, the benefits of the computer helping to do the matching is what is so great... Especially when you know they have answered questions about religion... whether they want children.... if they like sports... videogames... cuddling... comics... guns... pets... and have basically been pre-screened for any deal breakers...
- fartbarker, on 02/15/2009, -0/+1nice
- antdude, on 02/15/2009, -0/+1I ordered mine from Russia Bride service. :P
- nehaagarwal, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1$60 a month is desperate, that too for spoiling your life. Bars are cheaper n better.
- Mrpalooza, on 04/11/2009, -0/+1There are so many dating sites out there for singles it can make your head spin. Cupids Dating Directory helps make it easier to choose one that is right for you. http://www.cupidsdatingdirectory.com
- Peko, on 02/14/2009, -0/+1But artificially bumps all the really desperate losers.
- saranagati, on 02/17/2009, -0/+1Yeah, I agree. A friend signed me up on eharmony and out of probably a good 500 matches i've only seen maybe 3 girls that aren't hideous and only one of those girls lived anywhere near me. One other thing I noticed is that a LOT of the women on there are single moms, which i guess makes sense, since it's harder for them to get out and meet new people.
On a similar note, it seems like the quality of girls on there are a lot better looking outside of southern california, I assume due to it being a lot easier to meet new people here - FTLJohnson, on 02/15/2009, -0/+1Oh... if you were making the joke I think you were... It needed to be more overt... perhaps a mention of lube... or tissues.
- inactive, on 02/16/2009, -1/+2I signed up for eharmony and paid the fee because I had like 300 matches. You can only see their pictures after you pay up. Okay after paying the fee all the ones who wanted to initiate contact are hideous. There are a few decent looking women in my matches so I send them out the standard eharmony questions and then they never respond. On the bright side there are some very fat ugly women who are still requesting communication and I haven't deleted those matches yet in case I end up being really really desperate (been single since December). To the guy who says he met 38 women in a 6 month period: *****.
