http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/web/library/wa-ajaxintro1.html - SNACKeR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There are lots of articles on *how* to use AJAX, but precious few on *when* it is appropriate to use it, and how to fail gracefully. UI issues occur such as how to indicate to the user something is happening in the background, how to know when data is saved implicitly vs. when they need to click a Save or Update button...
- Bogtha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is one of the few Ajax tutorials that actually has decent code. The rest are usually awful. This uses object/feature detection and not browser detection, and actually mentions error handling should XMLHttpRequest not be available. Please, newbies, by all means use this tutorial and not the others.

The IBM developerWorks posts are actually worth reading though (unlike many of the others). - gator99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow the same tutorial that's been written on a dozen sites, to explain one javascript object and five lines of code. However, I like the Sitepoint tutorials better.
- inteppa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great article... actually useful.
- l33tfanboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I have to say that I completely agree.
It seems like digg posters are caught in some kind of ludicrous mind trap in which they have been brainwashed to echoing even the most mundane facts and link to the most subpar articles about what ever the marketing droids have deemed buzzworthy this week. - gilbes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The article asks "Microsoft playing nice?"
Implying what many geeks love to see. That Microsoft is evil.
The start of the article is from the standpoint that this is how its done, and this is how you do it for Microsoft.
Too bad that is not the case. Microsoft is the one who came out with the XMLHTTPRequest object, and others chose a different way to implement it. Now MS is going to add that different way of implementing thier own object. - Wolfman~K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0very useful well written articles. IBM hides this stuff, its nice to see diggers getting it out to the public.
- bhagany, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sidewalkpilot: Ajax is a figure from Greek mythology. The detergent company can't stop anybody from using the name for a non-detergent related purpose.
- SilverRocket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is well-written and way beyond the AJAX trash that has been making the front page of late... sorry, but this is worth a digg, even if i am sick of AJAX
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Ajax is overdone as news, but as a technology can really rock. I use it in almost all of my development work now, especially XAJAX which is a set of PHP functions that are easy to implement.rnrnhttp://www.gfx.com

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Ajax is a registered trademark. How can someone else be using it? This won't last.
- mike_p, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I know a lot of ppl don't care about ajax/css/web dev... but I love all that *****... I can't get enough of it...
- ihaterobots, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1*sigh*
informal survey: are any digg users older than 15?
when i was working as a webmaster writing "ajax" 10 years ago, it was called DHTML. Yes there's an XMLHTTPRequest object now, but frankly, clever people can simulate it with the JavaScript Image() object.
Get over it everyone. Unless you find JavaScript newsworthy, AJAX is barely worth talking about. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0What the hell isAjax?
- rhettnyedotorg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Trademark, like the bleach trademark? totally different.

No, it's referring to something that was proven in court: that Microsoft has a history of abusing their monopoly power in the tech industry--in effect, not playing nice. Keep up. - clueless, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0wowrnno comments and on the front page!
- ephekt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0"What the hell isAjax?"
Use a search engine, you're on the goddamn internet.

What is Digg?
