- sHockz, on 11/03/2009, -4/+53Hey Kurt, wanna get rid of those stupid ad's on the front page masquerading as articles i cant comment on?
- BoneheadFarker, on 11/03/2009, -4/+27It's an interview with a software engineer, and you're whining about his business experience? Other people are responsible for growing the business. He's responsible for writing code, and he does it with the tool he's most comfortable with. Where's the problem?
- nori0300, on 11/03/2009, -1/+19Hey Kurt, Nickleback Sucks!
- kwilms, on 11/03/2009, -0/+13Jared!
- T8erT0T, on 11/03/2009, -0/+13I would love to be able to comment on some those ads and share opinions with others about how a much that product/movie/show really, really, means to me.
- DoodleMaster, on 11/03/2009, -3/+15I Applied to the Univ. of Minn. and was denied :(
This article made me sad and happy at the same time because I'm majoring in computer science to be a software engineer, but it reminded me the the Univ. of Minn. thinks I'm a dumb ass...Twas my top two choices. That and RIT.
Edit: Why am I telling you people this D: - JWoodsUMD, on 11/03/2009, -1/+12Go Kurt!! I used to play soccer with this dude.. I had to do a double take when I saw the Digg headline.
- diggdong, on 11/03/2009, -0/+9Digg lifestyle?
- chuckDontSurf, on 11/03/2009, -0/+8I think this pic captures it pretty well: http://www.gearfuse.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/10 ...
- josepablos, on 11/03/2009, -0/+6and im a mexican :(
- JWoodsUMD, on 11/03/2009, -0/+6Yeah.. nice work man. I check out Digg everyday.. It's great to find out you're behind the scenes!
- V1ncent, on 11/03/2009, -2/+8Anyone not coding everything on Notepad or an equivalent is not an ubergeek.
- ajaxifier100, on 11/03/2009, -0/+5No...
- designtrades1, on 11/03/2009, -0/+4Hey! Listen!
- MattB123, on 11/03/2009, -0/+4He probably does but I doubt he's allowed to.
- squeevey, on 11/03/2009, -0/+4Well, it's also what we had on the terminals in the CSci labs at the UofMN.
- mister711, on 11/03/2009, -0/+4why is everyone asking stupid "Kurt help me" questions. He is a software engineer, not the product manager
- hummstheword, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3Can you get me a job there?
- naner, on 11/03/2009, -3/+6<broken record>
Assuming you're a firefox user, Ad Block Plus does a fantastic job of doing this for you.
</broken record> - mattmichler, on 11/03/2009, -1/+4You clearly don't understand what an engineer does. From Wikipedia: "Engineers are concerned with developing economical and safe solutions to practical problems, by applying mathematics and scientific knowledge while considering technical constraints."
This is what software engineers do. - txballer, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2Looks like they got rid of the ads ...I think.
Edit: I take that back the ads appear randomly now. - gamezdata, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2A stack of O'Reilly books and 10 years of real world experience would solidify my title quite nicely I'd say. Would you like me to retake every test you took in college to prove it? Wonder what I would score?
I'll tell you, I'd ace everything you took because I went back for my degree after 7 years in the field and obliterated every class I took, _after_ I tested out of the visual basic programs you sat pointing and clicking through.
I'm sorry to burst your elitist bubble torbensky, but that just doesn't fly in this field unless you can prove yourself. If you're a fresh grad, you'll find soon enough it doesn't mean squat. - YesImAChick, on 11/03/2009, -0/+21984
- hitchhiker009, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2It's cool ofc - you're not a hip kinda cat are you?
emacs = well you must know what you're doing.
digg up comment on using emacs = you respect others because you know what you're doing - you must have once upon a time flicked gate switches manually.
'dugg' = now you've 'dugg' an 'emacs' comment.. off the scale.
Seriously though: If he's happy with emacs, why not.. Celebrating that - we'll yeah, basically wtf. - PowderedToasty, on 11/03/2009, -2/+4I call myself a computer programmer. Every other way I've heard to say that sounds super pretentious.
- broeks, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1I transferred into that program in 2003 with a 2.6 gpa. Must be harder now...
- djspiff, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Haha Jared! Of all the places! <----Dave
- T8erT0T, on 11/03/2009, -1/+1http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjMYQyhjiYA
- bloggingdude, on 11/03/2009, -2/+2</sarcasm>
- Jowki, on 11/08/2009, -2/+2Sounds like fun. Wouldn't mind working there but since I'm only 16 I doubt I can. LOL.
- BrownieMix, on 11/03/2009, -16/+15"I write most of my code using emacs on a linux notebook."
Dugg. - Scotty87, on 11/03/2009, -4/+3I guess Kurt will never be as cool as Kevin...
- torbensky, on 11/04/2009, -1/+0The comment I made was not elitist. Regulated, professional certifications are necessary to ensure standards are met and a person can be held accountable for their work. They are necessary for the protection of the public. By your logic, why should the titles for doctors, lawyers or nurses be protected? Why shouldn't someone who thinks they are qualified be able to call themselves a doctor? Why should degrees be necessary?
- torbensky, on 11/03/2009, -2/+1Perhaps you should scroll down further and read under the heading "Regulation" in the same article you referenced. It provides a good explanation why in many countries you cannot call yourself an engineer unless you have an engineering degree and are professionally certified. There is quite a lot about the subject there, but specifically:
"The title, Engineer, and its derivatives should be reserved for those individuals whose education and experience qualify them to practice in a manner that protects public safety."
The article then lists a few examples of what usually qualifies an individual to be called an engineer.
And FYI, I have completed my engineering degree, so I am quite familiar with what an engineer does. What is that you do, besides knowing how to Google Wikipedia, that makes you so qualified? - gamezdata, on 11/04/2009, -3/+1The elitism stemmed from your wikipedia/google remark to the other person, as if you don't use them yourself.
I can see the need for a private contractor or a self-sustained person to have the necessary credentials (including certifications) to prove they know their work, but give me a break with the "public safety" shmeal. You're full of it.
Microsoft doesn't outsource programmers because there's an abundance of employable tech grads in America. - lane4, on 11/03/2009, -6/+4we are celebrating inefficiency now?
- mnocket, on 11/03/2009, -4/+1Kurt, can you please tell me if the reason I don't stay logged on to Digg is a problem with my browser or a problem with Digg that no one is able to fix?
- jordanlgta, on 11/03/2009, -9/+5The guy is a good guy, but do we really need to call him "Software Engineer" ?
The guy isn't making huge applications and programs. He coded a system for a website. - txballer, on 11/03/2009, -9/+4Hey Kurt! I really love the digg ads especially the ones that start playing audio without warning, my heart gets a much needed workout thanks to them also I love the digg that are disguised as articles.
Go love yourself Kurt ...seriously. - lamiaconfitor, on 11/03/2009, -7/+2Yay!
- ohplease, on 11/03/2009, -7/+2Hey Kurt instead of doing fluff pieces like this perhaps you could auto restrict posts that include 100's of ***** spammed URLs k thx
- inactive, on 11/04/2009, -5/+0kurt loves donekey penis in his mouth and semen all over
- cathead, on 11/03/2009, -10/+5Dugg for using EMACS as your editor.
- torbensky, on 11/03/2009, -7/+1Calling people software _engineers_ when they have no engineering degree is misleading. Like doctors and nurses, there's a reason those titles should be regulated. It's like calling a mechanic a "mechanical engineer" or an electrician an "electrical engineer."
- JackPotter, on 11/03/2009, -9/+0Do you know this cite 'digg' ?
I want to know this cite is famous in the world. - CaughtThinking, on 11/03/2009, -15/+6That's the dumbest thing I ever heard.
It's clear Digg has become an exercise in preserving san fran geek cool and is not really about growing a business. - nurbsenvi, on 11/03/2009, -13/+3Hey Kurt!
***** you~ - KevinRowz, on 11/03/2009, -11/+0Hey Kurt, lunch tomorrow?

What is Digg?
