It sounds like Mr. Webdeveloper didn't have his coffee today! - nthitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its not all that great if you ask me. It just tells you how to update a div. If you don't have any other Javascript experience then maybe you should learn that first.
- rc_collins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am sick of these sissy little basic guides to AJAX. Face it, the cool sites using AJAX are not simply just putting plain text from XML, they are transfering lots of data back and forth, this doesnt show an example of that.
--dan - Zoobster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2There is *no* way the minute, tiny "dig effect" would hurt webreference.com.
If any of you knew javascript, you'd know about the HTTP Request object. If you have an IIS server you're sending to, you've also got the ServerXMLHTTPRequest object which lets you (gasp!) server-side call pages that aren't local to the domain.
This doesn't even coin "AJAX". This is a simple description of using the HTTPRequest object. That's it.
Any of you folks ready to build a smart back-end receiving page? The page this thing "calls"? - soulcages01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i'm tired of hearing about ajax
- circusbred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice, doesn't seem to bring it all together all that well, people seem to find this one helpful:
Also, Wikipedia has a great deal of excellent links on AJAX for the beginner:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AJAX#External_links - Battlecry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow.. I didn't know is was so simple to begin with... I think I'll start messing around with it now :)
- echimu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yup very nice. I thought Ajex is very difficult stuff but with this I can do lot of stuff.. thanks ++digg
- zonemen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's fine here.
- djcoolmax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oppps! Think we just crashed the server. haha
- tablatronix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow ive been programming "AJAX" all this time.
Seriously this is just a HTTP request as everyone else stated.
I use it all the time when I want to refresh data without reloading pages etc.
They could at least have touched on xpath in that article for actually manuipulating the data other than just loading it. - masterzora, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dupe.
In fact, I started getting into Ajax with this very link from the first time it was Dugg.
Report['dupe']++; - ketsugi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Already hit by the digg effect? getting a 500 server error here.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1BAH..this looks like a lame Microsoft-specific example. Who in their right farking mind would code something just for Microsoft systems?
EL-LAMEO! NO DIGGO! - TeChGuRL19, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0good one!

- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0About fecking time :P
Been on the look out for basic AJAX stuff for a while (Never went out my way to try, for some reason)
- Ben - jdgtrplyr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I 'spose it's time to start learning Ajax! Been looking for a good start with this crazily talked about web language.
- SLaYaH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0very nice find
- djkritikal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's things like this that make a cool technology a horrible thing. AJAX has it's purpose, but it was not and should not be designed to do things just because it's "cool". You have to keep in mind that AJAX opens a big door in a person's security when surfing and this should not be taken lightly. No digg from me.
- N3LDAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0rasmus's 30 second tutorial was 500X better than this *****.
- kyle133, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Have a look at this...
