- chichin0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30 I personally prefer Windirstat. Just an alternative, both programs will get the job done:

link if u cant figure it out - gcnaddict, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Personally, I like Spacemonger better because it's much more navigable and user friendly:
http://www.werkema.com/software/spacemonger.html - bigtimepelham, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I love Windirstat, would recommend that to anyone
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8There's also DiskPie 2:

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I prefer spacemonger http://www.werkema.com/software/spacemonger.html
- toran, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7If you're willing to install some KDE libraries, I highly recommend filelight:
http://www.methylblue.com/filelight/
It's an amazing piece of software- one of the best little apps for disk usage tracking ever. - ccanni1028, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"This nifty little app tells you how many mp3's movies or other files types you've got one your machine." Then it sends this report to the RIAA and MPAA along with the FBI and CIA.
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6There's Disk Inventory X for Mac OS X users as well.
- fritts1227, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Have you guys used SequoiaView, I use it in a similar fasion... except it shows graphically whats taking up the most space. Its a cool tool, check it out.
http://www.win.tue.nl/sequoiaview/ - jguy584, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Great piece of software
digg+++++ - modpancake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I love Digg... I now have eleven diskspace/piechart utilities thanks to these comments. =P
- Magadass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I was about to say, WinDirStat beats this thing as far as visual representations, man WinDirStat has the cake on that! In actuality I was hoping Microsoft would adapt WinDirStats visual representation of your hard drive when it comes to space beign taken up with WinFS or something because it wouldnt need to scan it could just show you straight out, now that would be cool!
Gave me an idea to replicate this in .NET though, of course there is no way in hell I could replicate what WinDirStat does since I suck ass at GDI but the rest I could do easy enough. Would be an interesting side project, hmmmm... - DoubtfulSalmon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5> What do you mean I've got 60GB of pron
Dude, that means that 90% of your pr0n has dissapeared!!!1oneeleven!! QUICK! Do a backup before the rest dissapears! - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yep, great price, It told me I have 18mb that hasnt been modified on my Non-OS drive for 10 YEARS. Ive had computer for two years. and 2GB that hasnt been modified for 4-6 years.
and 6 GB for 2-4 years. really wierd. Wonder what it is.
Also found out I have 60GB of .AVIs, 20GB of .MP4s, 10GB od .mp3s. lol, need to cleanup.
My Drive with the OS as 5GB that hasnt been modified in 10 years, prolly Windows.. but I have XP, which is NOT 10 years old. Major wierd stuff - theman8631, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I agree with everyone else who knows what they are talking about.
http://windirstat.sourceforge.net/
Windirstat is not only better but it gives a simple efficient (and cool looking) representation of your hard drive so you can just click on the big block or big color section and visually understand what is going on with any section or your entire hard drive/drives. - peciv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I have used this jdiskreport for a long time and love it! It works so simply and easily!
- masterfuol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5or this http://windirstat.sourceforge.net/
or this http://www.werkema.com/software/spacemonger.html
edit: ok you beat me to it - gringer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4And, for those Linux users out there, the thing that windirstat is based on, kdirstat
http://kdirstat.sourceforge.net/ - shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5why dont you get KDE for just a little bit and then go back to gnome?
- jknight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Jam Software makes Treesize. It's non graphical but can work without an installation.
http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/index.shtml
I should explain, it shows a directory hierarchy view sortable by ascending / descending size. If you just take the treesize.exe file with you, you don't have to install anything.
I guess it's uses are obvious. I have installed the java app and it is pretty cool too. - ceralor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I prefer it too. Digg+++
- h2d2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's spelt pr0n, not pron.
How very leet of you... - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://www.jam-software.com/treesize/ is the best out there.
- er0k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3SequiaView is the best
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3so you never wonder: "what type of media is taking up the most space?", "What should I offload to DVDs?", or any other questions like that? You always know exaclty what percentage of your drive each movie takes up? I applaud you for your herculean powers of computation and memorization. ;)
- MedHead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3OverDisk, too.
http://users.forthnet.gr/pat/efotinis/programs/overdisk.html - mcbean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3WinDirStat's visual representation has many times helped me find long forgotten things taking up _huge_ amounts of space. Definitely a great program.
- Xiol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I second treesize. We use the Pro version to manage the disks on our servers. Works a treat, (though sometimes it can be a bit on the slow side...)
- Starskey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2WinDirStat from the MaximumPC April 2006 issue is much better.
- SpoBo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I prefer WinDirStat too ... much better. You use a lot more of your screenestate to show how big your files are.
- BluParadox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Seriously? That's more user friendly? What exactly are you on?
- dtaylor05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ya, the modification dates it gives you are kind of weird seeing as my laptop was manufactured last july and it said i had many gigs of data that was modified 2-3, 3-5, and even 6-10 years ago. It even said i had 12mb that was last modified over 10 yrs ago.
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Baobab does something similar. Check it out. If you're not using KDE, I guess there's about a 50% chance you're on Ubuntu, so if you are, it's "apt-get install baobab".
- PurgueFlantar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you get a "File Not Found" error just try again (refresh the page).
- danmanx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Great for noobies...I guess. I kinda know what's on my own damn machine.
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Very well deserves a Digg!...
This is very easy to understand even in end-user levels.
That SpaceMonger... looked like it was overkill...blah! - adamsitting, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have used both in the past. I agree that overdisk is better.
http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/OverDisk/overdisk.html - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hm, found files from 2106.. Not good..
Half-decent program though, faster than I though.. Scanned an external harddrive with about 210GB used in ~2minutes
- Ben - pillfred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Seems like it would be a cool app which i will no doubt use once possibly more. But i think what he was referring to was keeping stuff organized in the first place. Which for a geek would seem like common sense to me, IMO.
- tirian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, filelight is my favorite app for displaying disk usage. It displays a visual graph and allows you to easily drill down by clicking on the graph/chart. You can also set it up to ignore directories if you want.
Check out http://www.methylblue.com/filelight/images/filelight_0.6.3-2.png for an idea of how it works. - jaggededge99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3We use tools such as this when a user complains that they have no disk space but they claim they seldom save anything to the hard drive. I usually find gigs of mp3s which the user claims is not theirs. As soon as they do, I delete the entire collection and watch their face drop.
- h2d2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@bariswheel: here you go Einstein => http://www.answers.com/spelt&r=67
- copeland3300, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3wow, nice work linking to a program that was listed on a totally different digg several hours ago
- desimaniac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Very nice thread. Digg++. Finding these apps on google with traditional searches (disk view; folder view sizes) etc can be pretty tricky.
- ZachPruckowski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2JDisk Report seems to work for Mac too
- vertino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2isn't this just a spin-off digg from yesterday's "Guide to the Best Freeware!" story?
http://www.digg.com/software/Guide_to_the_Best_Freeware_
JDiskReport was mentioned in that list... it's still a great app though! - Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Too bad java apps lag like ***** since java sucks ass. Java is just the language you learn before you learn C because it's easier to pickup language concepts with it. It's a learning language and definately not a production one.
- nogami, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've used SequoiaView for years - great program! Wonderful for seeing where stuff is and what's taking up the room. Very intuitive.
