- Buelldozer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Attention!
You smart people with real world experience need to go back to slashdot. You're wrecking the curve for the rest of the diggizens.
Thank you, that is all. - Phil246, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Thats an IDE, not an application server.

The problem is that websphere is overly complex for no good reason. I've used it for many years and it is just too slow and sloppy. The only reason it exists is because it has IBM to pimp it. If it wasn't for IBM it would have died the death it should have many years ago.
One could even make the argument that it isn't 100% Java because it will only run on their JVM. - cdlavalle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Give them a week. Websphere is a major pain in the ass and cannot compare to the ease of use and visibility of JBoss, sorry.
- Xanadude, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9WebSphere is complex, yes, but it's complex for good reasons. Sometimes "ease of use" isn't the most important thing; I've developed apps on WebSphere that would simply crush JBoss, not to mention all the third-party support.
- TheBull, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Unless you are really paying attention however, you won't notice that while it has the WebSphere name, it is really Apache's Geronimo server that you are getting. Which I might add is far better than the regular WebSphere (although that isn't saying much).
- altjeringa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Hmmm let's poll IBM users about what applications server they use.... hee. Eclipse is an IBM product. I bet you'd get equally skewed results if you polled Netbeans users.
- jma06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4> Eclipse is not an "IBM Product" it is an open source product.
It is an open source IBM product. Eclipse did come from IBM as did Netbeans from Sun. Both the companies continue to pour significant resources into them after having open sourced them. - incubus13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Dochtuir
Eclipse is way too cluttered. I prefer the simple yet powerful IDE of netbeans. I was able to pickup netbeans in about 5 mins, while spending half an hour trying to figuring out how to accomplish this or that in eclipse.
That level of complexity for what should be simple tasks turns away many developers... - sirsteveh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Fellow diggers:
This is really starting to piss me off. One guy is advertising under a number of accounts for "freecomputerbooks.com." He routinely replies to the top post to get himself high on the page even when all threads have gotten long. If you don't believe me, check the comment history of the following users:

Please, this is spam and it's irritating, don't click links he pastes and digg him down on sight. I'm not the only one who's fed up, either: http://www.digg.com/programming/Effective_use_of_Interfaces_and_Abstract_Classes#c3137415
There are probably more, but I think I've made my point. - Shogeru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If I were to have been drinking milk, it would have gone from my nose to my keyboard after reading that. And no, I have nothing constructive to add.
- CaughtThinking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i have yet to hear an first hand account that doesn't mention how horrible working with websphere was.
- Dopeskills, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2NetBeans + Glassfish/Sun App Server is just so much simpler and more efficient that I really don't understand why anyone would want to use Eclipse + WebSphere.
- oneovernone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Websphere community is bloated Apache Geronimo, and the AST is bloated Eclipse + Web tools. Remove the wizard screens, save yourself a GB of RAM usage, and just use the non-IBM equivalents.
- jcmia1, on 02/07/2009, -0/+1To make websphere run faster, check this out:
http://www.performancewiki.com/was-tuning.html - psylence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, do say Eclipse isn't an IBM product is just fooling yourself. Of course, that doesn't stop it from being the best.
- clank3377, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1WebSphere covers a lot but the article is just about the application server aka WAS. It is complex but I know before that some free app servers don't support EJBs, WAS does. Are they open sourcing all editions of WAS?
- cdlavalle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I am genuinely curious so don't read too much sarcasm into this....I have to deal with Websphere and JBoss and cannot for the life of me figure out any advantages that Websphere has. When it crashes it does so very strangely, it seems like you have to go through a GUI whenever you want to deploy, or whatever, and according to our benchmarking, it runs slower than JBoss. I am just a developer and no expert on the pros and cons of different app server platforms so my question is this: what advantages does Websphere have over JBoss?
- joeyGibson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I was on a project for two years that used WebSphere. There's no way in hell I'd every willingly use it again, free or not. I use JBoss now, and all is (generally) right with the world.
- psylence, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1WebSphere is the bane of J2EE. It ranks up there w/Oracle's pile of poopy.
- kdraks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2If you read the latest Evans survey on what Open Source Developers are using you'll find that IBM is #3 behind Sun and JBoss. I think this is just spin to make it seem like #3 is ok. I think Sun's GlassFish server is far ahead and it's already EE 5.
- psylence, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1incubus: Maybe retarded ones. To create a simple java app in Eclipse: New Project -> New Class -> Type Code -> Save -> Run.
Hard? - cdlavalle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The only real advantage NetBeans has is Matisse (which is why I use NetBeans, mostly) But MyEclipse has Matisse as well, although you have to pay for it, and you have access to all the nifty plug ins (Eclipse's real advantage). Eclipse has very little to do with WebSphere. Glassfish and JBoss rocks though! JBoss ON is really nice too. Too bad you have to pay $30000 for the privilege of using it.

Yeah.. I remember that post. And yeah.. I did see those usernames in other digg stories as well. Digg comments aren't for link spam. - IbnDigg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Sorry, dumb question, but could someone please give a quick overview of what WAS actually is? or maybe even a few newbie links?
- blynder, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I conquer
- Dochtuir, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Yes, and even then Eclipse > Netbeans
- natebmiller, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Eclipse is not an "IBM Product" it is an open source product.
- danda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0WebSphere Application Server Community Edition is basically same as Apache Geronimo, it is better than JBoss IMHO
here is some very good free Java resources
