- AenTan, on 12/07/2007, -1/+29This is an "All Rights Reserved" Ripoff of the opensource ProjectPier.
http://www.projectpier.org/
The interface, structure, app is exactly the same except it's a different skin. They took ProjectPier, skinned it, called it their own and charging money for it. - lotides, on 12/07/2007, -6/+19I will never sign up for any of these. Why should I trust important data and client interaction to an outside party? After significant time and energy invested they could disappear leaving all of your data locked in their system. The server could go down at an important time. For all I know their server isn't even secure and my client projects under non-disclosure could be wide open in the internet.
I'll care when I can run it on my own server. - phoopee3, on 12/07/2007, -1/+9is there something like this, but nost hosted? that I can download and host myself?
- AenTan, on 12/07/2007, -0/+7http://www.projectpier.org/ is the only free self-hosted one I know. Been using it for a few months. Pretty good but lack of some features.
- grelli, on 12/07/2007, -0/+7For everyone asking for a downloadable project manager like basecamp, look at Project Pier (http://www.projectpier.org/) which is a fork of ActiveCollab. The fork came about when the AC project changed their licensing terms.
- AenTan, on 12/07/2007, -1/+7RIPOFF ALERT!!
Original (opensource): http://aendirect.com/projectpier.png
Rip (paid): http://aendirect.com/project2manage.png - StealthAgent87, on 12/07/2007, -1/+7They have a free plan but to get anything good you need to pay. This site looks promising.
- MalDON, on 12/07/2007, -0/+6The program has a HUGE security flaw. You can make yourself the administrator of any company that is registered. Just click edit profile on your account, then select the company you wish to own.
- jmanlasman, on 12/07/2007, -1/+7Does anyone know of any free project management system that can be run from your own server?
- cdawzrd, on 12/07/2007, -0/+5not if you want all the good features...
- nickvd, on 12/07/2007, -1/+6Okay... so it doesn't suit your needs.. Does that automatically mean that it is completely useless for everyone else? Of course you shouldn't trust private and proprietary information to a third party (or at least one that hasn't signed the NDA). Even if I had a fully paid basecamp account, I would be VERY cautious about what data is included in the service.
- MalDON, on 12/07/2007, -0/+5There's one called phpprojekt but it sucks.
- V1be, on 12/07/2007, -0/+5Go look at their site now. They apparently got "an email" that informed them that they were dugg. Yeah, an email from the digg-spam company they hired saying that the bill is due. They don't even spell their name in the first line properly, and they have something about "Spot2Jot" which I assume is a misspelling of JotSpot. It's just an ad brought to you by Digg's algorithm and some diggers who don't know any better.
- rcrossvs, on 12/08/2007, -0/+5check out ProjectPier (http://www.projectpier.org) as several others have said, its free and you host it yourself.
- krynsky, on 12/08/2007, -0/+4I was using Basecamp a while back and found it lacking in many necessary features for effective project management. Ability to assign tasks to users, prioritize, and track estimate / real time spent on tasks were some of those features. After looking at a bunch of free alternatives I came across a site / service called http://www.clockingit.com it offers all of these features and much more. I couldn't be happier. Also if you don't want to run it as a service you can download the ruby on rails source code and run it on your own server.
- AenTan, on 12/08/2007, -0/+3I have contacted ProjectPier about this.
- douglosu, on 12/07/2007, -1/+4phoopee3: Check out activeCollab.
Edit: actually, it looks like they charge for activeCollab now. - magic6435, on 12/07/2007, -0/+3Its got ads... No thank you.
- darkecho, on 12/08/2007, -0/+3You could try http://www.dotproject.net
It seems to work ok for some people I know who use it. - rYno, on 12/08/2007, -0/+3The last thing I want my clients logging into is that p2m control panel. You get all slammed with google ads and clients quite typically get confused about those. Usability isn't the greatest either. I'd pay for basecamp long before I'd consider this app.
- carmenharvey, on 12/07/2007, -0/+3I don’t know how you can even start to compare this site to Basecamp…this site sucks
- andrewroth, on 12/14/2007, -0/+2I second clockingit. The Campus Internet Ministry part of Campus Crusade for Christ has been using clockingit for 7 months and we love it! They have some neat "push" server updates, so if my coworker changes a task priority while I have a page that task on it, the task will update itself on my page. We were expecting to pay a monthly fee (it's certainly good enough to warrant one) but it's free which is a bonus.
- Josh93945, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2Agreed! Clocking IT is quite amazing for being a free product. I'm totally digging it's features.
- pr0gr4mm3r, on 12/08/2007, -0/+2I don't see any. ;)
- keef06, on 12/08/2007, -0/+2"Mange: A skin condition caused by a burrowing mite, which causes severe itching." - http://www.omlet.co.uk/guide/guide.php
- beejive, on 12/07/2007, -0/+2Project Pier is open source and Good! Install on your own server. Do what you like.
http://www.projectpier.org/ - phoopee3, on 12/07/2007, -0/+2yeah, i knew of AC, but I thought they were charging for it, which stinks. but diggers are mentioning projectpier, which i'll have to check out.
- hitman47, on 12/08/2007, -0/+2I'm using Streber (http://www.streber-pm.org/)
- essjay, on 12/07/2007, -1/+3I will treat any tool that can't spell it's own name "Stay Organized
Project2Mange is a great tool to keep you organized...." and spams digg, with contempt. - hipnerd, on 12/07/2007, -0/+2They aren't charging money, but it looks like they are in serious violation of the license.
Ironically, there is nothing in the license preventing them from charging money. It's hiding the source code and failing to adhere to the license terms that will get them into trouble. - aliguana, on 12/07/2007, -0/+2activeCollab used to be free and open-source. Then they closed the source and started charging for it. However, some people took the last available OSS version of activeCollab and set up a new fork of it: Project Pier. This version will progress differently and separately from activeCollab, and remain open source. (Correct me if I'm wrong)
- aliguana, on 12/07/2007, -0/+2Maybe people should be getting involved with ProjectPier instead, and bringing that project up to scratch. Everyone would benefit from a good open-source project management package. Apart from the people who charge for it ;)
- inactive, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2There's really only one banner add on the free version of fmyi... And it's real easy to use
- freudianslipper, on 12/07/2007, -0/+2How are they charging money when it's free?
- smileydude, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1Camp Speedball has been around for years.
- Bashrat, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1That interface is downright bad. Design & typography does make a difference in usability.
- fudgie, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1My pet project at http://www.clockingit.com is also free and installable on your own servers.
- MalDON, on 12/07/2007, -0/+1This one is awesome. I just installed it and I'm liking it a lot. Thanks!
- MalDON, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1Yea, that's the problem with them just using some opensource script. The script isn't made for this type of use.
- douglosu, on 12/07/2007, -0/+1I'll have to check that out. Thanks.
Right now I use Zoho, which is hosted, but it has a few features that basecamp doesn't. - rcrossvs, on 12/07/2007, -0/+1no one is developing the 0.7.1 version any more - all new versions are commercial and require payment. ProjectPier is actively developing the code base
- nickvd, on 12/07/2007, -1/+2I agree 100%, I don't use these services either, and wont until I can host it myself... that still doesnt mean it's completely useless..
- inactive, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1www.fmyi.com and jive's clearspace both have enterprise versions. But they seem to be a little hefty on price
- rcrossvs, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1As several others have said, look at ProjectPier - http://www.projectpier.org it is an opensource system that you can host yourself and can provide as much data security as your hosting and sysadmin skills.
- cubesunray5, on 12/11/2007, -0/+1This project2manage app is full of bugs and errors. Free shouldn't mean crappy! I used to track my design work with a free tool called sidejobtrack, now I switched to CollabTRAK. It's free and pretty darn good actually. Not sure about everyone else, but I like it: http://www.collabtrak.com
- hcabbos, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1Frickin' unbelievable! I caught that minutes before reading your post and was totally pissed off to say the least. What a glaring oversight. For something like this to fall through the cracks should make anyone seriously consider who's running it.
- jjriv, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1Anyone stumbling across this digg looking for alternatives to Basecamp may also want to check out Intervals:
http://www.myintervals.com - pankajunk, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1we use http://www.hyperoffice.com - its comprehensiveness is its advantage. project management tools are well integrated with other collab tools, and it costs the same as solely project tools.
- Phlosten, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1I'd rather keep my confidential data on my own server thank you. Buried for being a bit of a con. The Microsoft way of business? first taste is free?
- themoosejuice, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1I just use an excel sheet. Always works. Unlimited projects.
