Gosling joins over 1700 Canadians named Officer of the Order of Canada, people like:
Paul Anka, Stompin Tom Conners (wrote "The Good Ol Hockey Game"), Celene Dion, the members of Rush, Bryan Adams
The highest order (Companion of the Order of Canada) has gone to people like
architect Frank Gehry, Joni Mitchell and Gordon Lightfoot

Java 5 and now with the release of Java 6 has made java just as fast, if not faster, than any other language in it's class. It's also one of the most widely used languages right now (not saying that popularity alone is an indicator of greatness, but it shows there will be support - and job - for a long time)
If Java is truly crap you might want to write a memo to
The Army and Airforce
Most of the banks in America

I'm trying to say she's been awarded Officer of the Order of Canada.
Sometimes facts are just that facts and not intended to imply anything one way or the other. - ear1grey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10No instead I'm craasheeng your head! I'm craasheeng your head!
- shauncullen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Java is a really well thought out language with garbage collection, ground up object focus, and general ease of use. It basically holds your hand whereas C derivatives let you go nuts because the assumption is that programmers know what they are doing (that's a generally faulty assumption). The flexibility and speed advantages of C are countered by Java's builtin features, basically most languages are pretty much equal, different tools for different tasks.
- dan2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9lol probably the worst attempt at that cliche EVER.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Interesting note on James Gosling (from Wikipedia):
In October 2006 he shaved for the first time in decades (in preparation for surgery). According to him, neither his wife nor his children had ever seen him before without a beard. - jspegele, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13insert clever Canadian joke
- jettstream, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Great honour, we also invented Basketball (http://www.kansasheritage.org/people/naismith.html) and Superman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Shuster) too eh!
- gharding, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Wow, I hope to be up there with the ranks of Celine Dion and the members of Rush some day. A boy can dream, right?
- shauncullen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is pretty cool, he's a University of Calgary alum, I thought about taking CS there until I realized my math skills weren't too good. Basic Calculus and Linear Algebra almost murdered me.
- Gerolsteiner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Strange, when I first saw this, I thought it said "Father of Canada named to Order of Java."
- MikeDawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What an honor (honour).
- ear1grey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Uh oh, I smell Godwin's Law approaching.

I'm not acting like a 12-year-old with an inferiority complex, I just pulled a list of Canadian inventions off the net in an attempt to give our American friends and idea of what we've provided. I forgot that Bell invented radio voice transmission; I would have removed it from the list had I did, just like I did with the telephone, along with the light bulb.
Chill out, k? - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Canadians have invented a ***** lot of stuff.
Insulin, Five-pin bowling, the Wonderbra, pacemakers, zippers, electric wheelchairs, the Canadarm, Standard Time, the electron microscope, Ski-Doos, the BlackBerry, radio voice transmission, basketball, modern hockey, Instant Replay, the goalie mask, electric ovens, Walkie-Talkies, Alkaline batteries, green garbage bags, snowblowers, instant mashed potatoes, explosives vapour detector, Plexiglas, key frame animation, and the paint roller... just to name a few. - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Whatever. The US has a population roughly 100x that of Canada's, so by sheer numbers and probability, it's no surprise that Americans have made 100x the number of inventions that Canadians have.
- Ashkc88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ford_prefect2nd
What are you talking aboot? No one makes fun of how Canadians talk...thats just silly... - SmartITGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well then just keep your ass in the US then,
you'll be doing us ALL a favour since your odds of getting killed will increase exponentially. - strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"I began wondering how far down the comments list I would have to go before I saw "eh". Didn't even need to get that far, the summery managed it. 15 year old joke, that was barley funny 15 years ago."
I guess someone should tell my relatives from northern Canada that, since they all say "eh" after almost every sentence. - benow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Way to go James.... that's what the long winters are for!
- slapout, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Was this because he confused their enemies with Java?
- ear1grey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3So, work hard, be approachable at tech fairs, come up with a good language that is designed from day zero to get machines working together, continue to develop and promote the language, don't sell-out and eventually open source the whole thing, and get a middle grade gong from your government.
Alternatively, engage in anti-competitive business practices leveraging a coercive monopoly to destroy your competitors and get a knighthood and make 100,000 times as much money.
It's no wonder kids are confused about the world, it makes no sense. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4May I ask why?
- vafada, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3He's vice-president of Sun Microsystems Inc. but still wears an ordinary T-shirt in the office. Cool boss.
- BrewmasterC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Other than constantly battling between basic/object types, and having a standard library forced down your throat by Sun I would say it isn't all that bad.
- psyno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How exactly do you get a standard library forced down your throat as an application programmer??? Maybe don't use the library then?
- Sonizel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1+ don't forget java is open source now
- biuku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nice. Funnier, but non-derivative, would have been the Order of Jabba. I'd like to win that.
- john72carter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh Jaaaavaaaaa, sorry couldn't resist. way to go james, you must be so proud to rubbing shoulders with Celene Dion.
- jspegele, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2*sigh* I guess I should have included the "/sarcasm" in my comment
- Seidoger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Who even knew he was Canadian eh?"
Me. I think it's written on the 1st or 2nd line of the Wikipedia page for "Java" .. - TroubleInMind, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Im in ur country making ur computers crash
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Java users are all Nazis.
- crpietschmann, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3A canadian created Java? Hmm... maybe that's why it's so bad. j/k
Good for him. - marsbar, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0@ Zippo
Nice list, pretty impressive. It just pales in comparison when you realize that Americans invented just about everything else in the 20th century not on that list. - whiskeyjack, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1@zippo
Zippers were not invented by a Canadian. If you want to attribute it to one man, it was a Swedish-born American. Radio Voice transmission. No. Argue all you want, but Bell was born in Scotland. Yeah, he grew up in Canada, but he did this after moving to the states. Basketball. I'll give you that Naismith was Canadian by birth... again, he went to the States. I'm not even going to bother going through the rest as I'm sure I could find other things in your list that you've misattributed to Canadians.
You're not helping other Canadians (ie. me) by acting like a twelve year old with an inferiority complex when stuff like this comes up. Canada is good. The US is good. Can't we all just grow up a little? - netzdamon, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5And here i always hopped the creator of Java would get the gas chamber...
- Ford_Prefect2nd, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3Well reading the summery I began wondering how far down the comments list I would have to go before I saw "eh". Didn't even need to get that far, the summery managed it. 15 year old joke, that was barley funny 15 years ago. Wonder how long till someone comments on our military in this thread, or maybe gun registration (good or bad).
Happy to see him honoured, the honour is to rarely given to those of more intellectual pursuits. - shartman, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1The two are perfect for each other!
(My #1 goal in life. Not to die in Canada) - shinerweb, on 10/12/2007, -13/+5(Re: First comment: your comment position matches your IQ now... funny how art imitates life).
Nice to see Gosling or more importantly achievers in technology being given the recognition they deserve.
Were it not for Gosling, I would never be able to download my Java Apps to my kettle and toaster... - jspegele, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1What exactly are you trying to say about Celene Dion???
- skyhighrockets, on 10/12/2007, -28/+6Too bad java is a peice of crap :/
