- snowdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5http://filext.com/ is a much better service.
Better description for each format. - Mark0Pon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Check this:
http://file-extension.net/seeker
It crawl various of the most respected file extensions listing sites (with permission), and maintain a local / aggregate index. This enable lightning fast search, and also complex queries, like: all file types witch contain the word "docum*" but not "microsoft". It's very handy.
Standard disclaimer: it's a tool of mine. - ThisMessIAmIn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Statusquorules: M4P is the extension for FairPlay-protected files from the iTunes Music Store. I believe M4A files are unprotected MPEG-4 files you rip from a CD in Apple Advanced Codec (AAC) format using iTunes.
- Lynxpro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
Where's AAC? - killa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not EVERY file format in the world. Where is SWI (swish data file)? :)
- dodger2020, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Err, they'd have.... plus, not everything on that page is actually a file format. Some are definitions of acronyms.
- Dycacian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I totally agree. filext.com is far better and easier to use. Plus it has all of the definitions of the extensions that have multiple meanings like ".wad".
- dodger2020, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If it was "every file format in the world" they've have a description for the .fuk file. But they don't. So it isn't. As snowdog said, filext.com is much better.
- TheAttacks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks this is useful.
- andrei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0CRAP!
Doesn't have the formats of many of the programs I currently use. - fideli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No MP4? No MKV? Lame.
- StatusQuoRules, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0where is m4v as well, m4a is there though
M4A Protected AAC audio file (possibly from iTunes Music Store)
mine come as M4P - EntropyGuru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The first two I looked for weren't there: PDB (protein data bank) and DCD (a simulation trajectory format). These guys need to rethink the title of their database. I'll email 'em and get 'em back on track.
- mrdeep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I expected something like this ...
@c = ['a', 'b', 'c', 'd', 'e', 'f', ... '7', '8', '9']
foreach(@c as $cc) {
foreach(@c as $cc1) {
foreach(@c as $cc2) {
print $cc . $cc1 . $cc2 . "n";
}
}
}
next: every ip address in the world ... - thatedeguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Could be a handy reference, but obviously isn't as all-inclusive as it portrays itself.
thatedeguy
http://www.thatedeguy.com - xybe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does not know extensions for raw files from my Canon camera, ie CRW or CR2, incidentally filext.com does, see http://filext.com/detaillist.php?extdetail=cr2&Search=Search
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How does this relate to programming? It's just file formats!
- BT-Wang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0do any of these sites include mime-types as well as extensions?
- databyss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Crappy.
www.filext.com is much better and has tons more extensions. - olorinpc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0like thatedeguy said... handy, but did anyone notice when it said it was last updated? 2000. So it will be missing a few of the newer ones. Good for a quick referance, but google works just as well most of the time.
- prairieson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0liutilities.com is another good one, and like the above mentioned filext.com, it has more depth as well.
- MasteRR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Um... this is nowhere near complete. After looking just 2 minutes I found several that were not listed.
.7z - 7zip archive
.tar.gz - Gizipped Tarball (They have .tgz, but .tar.gz is used too)
.part##, .r## and .### for split rar archives.
.xvid
.divx
.od* - Open document extensions.
.utx .umx .ut2 .uax .unr .ukx .ka .usx - Various extensions used by Unreal based games.
.flac - Free Lossless Audio Codec
.ape - Monkey Losless Audio Format
I'm sure there are many others. - MellerTime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, M4A isn't a protected format at all, just MPEG-4. M4P is an encrypted M4A file that you get from the iTunes Music Store... No digg!
- toasterwaffle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0GP3 - Guitar Pro 3 project
GP4 - Guitar Pro 4 project - VenDrake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you actually want to know the actual FORMAT of a file, ie the bits & bytes for loading a file into memory, I recommend:
http://www.wotsit.org/ - wyldtek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No '3gp' either. Thanks for the tip about filext.com
- kanu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nothing from the seismic industry too... fileformats that have been around for eons on tape's and such
sgd sgc sga sgb sgy (seg-d seg-c seg-a seg-b seg-y) just a few of them.. - jdgiotta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Missing .ANY
***** proprietary text format. - MikeEFresh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lynxpro: AAC is the codec, M4A, M4P and the not-used-any-more-as-far-as-I-know M4B
- Jugm123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0missing .biz for showbiz video editing progs
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree that FILExt is much, much better. Plus, it have a very good and active forum where to ask for info.
- zonk3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0they don't have .ass, .blo, .fuk or .thiscommentsucks hmm....
- awlllwa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and we can't forget .pk3, .pk4.
well if there are any other Quake III level makers out there still. - rageriot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I prefer http://www.dotwhat.net/ and end up using it all the time, and imo it's the best out there these days.
- tapo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Uh, where's ODT and the other OpenDocument formats?
- jla1987, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It does seem like this site is missing quite a bit, but oh well.
dugg - Shish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Those aren't file formats, they're file name extensions :/
A site with actual format info on file types would be very useful, but I've never seen one; far too often I end up taking a hex editor to files and figuring them out myself :( - gizram84, on 05/30/2009, -0/+0oooold
- adiaga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it is always good to know :)

http://www.bluelightsoft.com - Kennneth, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I think, the best site like those is http://www.file-extensions.org - there is more info about file formats and file extensions
- macman23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice list, but I think http://www.fileinfo.net provides better information.
- anagami, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0this lacks some important file formats, ie: what about .xcf?
- jdgtrplyr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Tiiight. Needs to be in a PDF format.
For being a huge reference, I'll +digg it.
