- TKovacs, on 10/10/2007, -6/+23Since it is still in beta and they're selling it, maybe you guys should give notepad++ a try. It is my favourite editor at work.
http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net - MBHoy, on 10/10/2007, -10/+26You Windows people actually PAY for a text editor?
- Aggronaut, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13I just took my PC to Geek Squad and they upgraded my notepad to wordpad for only $49.99 !!! Labor included!!!!
- janeuner, on 10/10/2007, -4/+14apt-get install vim
- hometoast, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12I really still can't comprehend paying $35 for a text editor when there are so many good free alternatives. Vim, emacs, gedit, notepad++, kate, .. blah blah blah.
- spectre_25gt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I write all my documents with clever usage of sed awk and /dev/random
- makingme, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Some people like to actually support projects as opposed to leeching off the sweat and tears of software makers. Get over yourself.
- habbofresh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7cat & ^d
editors are for wimps. - donquixote235, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Sure, until you compile and it tells you you've got an error on line 2160. Like you're gonna hit the down arrow 2159 times.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9Maybe.. but is it really required for linux? aptitude install geany and be done with it.
- makingme, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8inType is getting around to releasing something soon. Then again, they proclaimed that almost a whole year ago. However, I hope inType hits the scene soon. Heated competition creates great products. I'm a E-text editor guy nonetheless. The text-editor space is exciting again.
- zip000, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I've been using it for about 2 years, and I'm actually quite fond of it. It doesn't do all the "flashy" stuff that some other text editors do, but it does the job pretty well - and it also does batch stuff really well. On several occasions, I've been able to do stuff in vi in a minute or less that would take hours otherwise.
- marksands07, on 10/10/2007, -8/+14lame. Notepad++ is the same thing and it doesn't require a $35 dollar license.
- brufleth, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8No, no I don't.
- Cenobite, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Yeah, because if it costs 35 bucks it MUST be good.
- bguthro, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6meh. I'll stick with vim
- ditoa, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Bundles?
- Ignotus, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8Vi sucks! Moving around and editing in vi is like trying to fly a jet for the first time. I still don't know most of Vi's controls after a couple of years of using it.
- Cenobite, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Now if only someone would fix emacs...
/flame on - kreativenaim, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Why would I pay $35 for a proprietary editor? I don't care if the editor is better, it costs money and is proprietary software.
For Windows, Notepad++, jEdit, and Programmer's Notepad are all good easy-to-use editors that are very powerful. For all systems, Vim and GNU Emacs are good choices, though they take a large investment of time to learn to use well.
Hell, I'd rather use ed than spend $35 on E. - cmburns69, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Editing files via FTP on a live server is just asking for trouble. 1) There's no release process (how do you change multiple files at once simultaneously?). 2) It's likely there's no backup in case anything breaks. 3) It's likely there's no backup in case the server HD fails. 4) Are you sure you've made the same changes on your test server and your live server? (do you have a test server?)
I used to think that having FTP built in to an editor was awesome. But now that I've experienced all of the above, I've decided to use more tried and true methods. Now, when I check-in to SVN, it automatically updates the website atomically by creating a new directory with the entire website. Problem solved! - bruenig, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4pacman -S geany
- filipf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Try jEdit. The only java program I like and recommend - http://www.jedit.org. I love all the plugins, scripting, customization, and ctrl+mouse highlighting of random areas of text. I have not seen another editor with such highlighting.
- habbofresh, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6debian "apt" isn't on *every* linux you know...
- bikebill, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3vim is my usual editor, but Cream adds some nice extra features like column mode. Check it out - http://cream.sourceforge.net/
- enclave2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I just installed it and tried the trial.
Locked up twice doing two different tasks.
So it's back to notepad++ for me.
Sucks. I was excited about the auto complete stuff it had to offer. - timster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Ctrl+G
Type in 2160 - morphie, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6Second that. Notepad++ is one of the best text editors I've known. And I used to use TextPad, Edit plus, UltraEdit etc...
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Well if I wanted to use TextMate I would need to pay $2000 for a Mac. If I had Linux then I wouldn't have some of the Windows-only apps that I need. So yes, $35 is barely anything in the business world. I however, use Notepad++ when possible.
- brufleth, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5vi
- burke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3emerge -C geany
- Jacob, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4i love gedit
- madeingermany, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You also can't install it without Admin rights.
Hate that! - keylime, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2What's the big deal, this thing isn't even free!
- l1wulf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Sounds clever indeed. I'd like to see this in action...
- d0odx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2For Ruby on Rails dev, try RoRED from http://www.plasmacode.com/. Very good IMO, and of course it's FREE!
- kefland, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2vim FTW.
- multitude, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Why would I pay for this when emacs is more powerful, and free?
- Mithrander, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Notepad++ is so easily the most flexible text editor I've ever seen.
- WoollyMittens, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I use this. It's FREE. It's great. http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/
- LoudNoise, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2No split view? WTF?
- valinorbob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You mean other than the fact that gedit is for linux and e is for windows? Have you even looked at e?
- herrpfarrer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2for heaven's sake, why has nobody mentionned SciTE... http://www.scintilla.org
It's open source, works well, has a lot of features, is light-weight... and free, of course...
The main component "Scintilla" is used by a lot of other editors... - C0D3M3C4, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Looks very nice with some good features. But still nothing you couldn't do with a bit of elisp code ;-)
I'll stick to my emacs thanks. - leohart, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Sane highlighting? Bundle/snippet?
- Respec7, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I've tried just about every single editor, i stayed with notepad++ until intype came out..then went to e, e and intype are not bulky like ultra edit is.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Someone hasn't used Textmate, its like this but 100 times better, cleaner and more polished
- etx313, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Bleh, I'll stick with __Insert trendy editor here__!
- leohart, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Digg me down but bad color highlighting and no feature list on the homepage mentioning snippets is really a no go for me.
- burke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2emerge emacs
*fixed. -
