- tungsai, on 10/12/2007, -3/+44Typical DIGG Comment timeline.
1. A story appears.
2. Within the first 6 comments, some idiot says something stupid. Gets -20 digs.
3. Somebody tries to make a point,
4. Is called an idiot by somebody else who thinks they know better.
5. Somebody cracks a joke that is really funny to themself... and nobody else.
6. You tell yourself, "God, what a bunch of idiots..." Then out of habit... scroll to the bottom, and start typing. Before you know it, you're just another idiot.
Like me. - TinMan, on 10/12/2007, -6/+26I use PHP for shell scripting in FreeBSD. It's not "web-use only".
- noodlez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17one of the first things i was taught in my college software engineering classes is that each language is like a tool. if all you know how to use is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.
php is great for web stuff. if you want to do applications, go learn C++ or java. if you want to do AI, use prolog. etc. etc. omni-languages are usually pretty good with most everything, but not great at anything. so don't knock php for being really good for web stuff but uselss for anything else.
"I still prefer separation of code and content."
i'm using php right now for a new project and i'm having no problems separating code and content. ofc, thats because its the nature of the project i'm working on. which is why i picked php. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Uh yeah.
- mercnboy3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Who is Eli White?
- sleazy, on 10/12/2007, -16/+24This first comment brought to you by an account that was just created to digg this article up. Nice digg history cattyheather.
- jramos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Eli White is a toddler: http://www.eliwhite.com/ .
- sleazy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10@matt
the account was made 3 months ago and has 1 friend (eli white) and 1 digg (eli white's article) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Not interested in the spammed book. Not for purchase at least. Maybe I'll check it out when someone has put a PDF of it up on bit torrent.

You forgot about when someone decides to correct "your" spelling.
"your" != "you're"
"you're" = "you are" - daldredge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Rockstars have money (lots) and women - digg doesn't get you either.
- Quarks, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14Spamming your book is ok as long as it's on your own site right? ;)
- lord2800, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Apaprently you've failed to look into PHP5 then. As of PHP5, it is a hybrid object-oriented language with enough features and functionality built into the language to make it a very viable Perl replacement(CPAN-like library notwithstanding, and PEAR is not even close to CPAN yet). As far as the "separation of code and content" argument goes, have you never heard of templating and regular expression replacement? I haven't written a PHP page with embedded content in over a year now, and I learned PHP about 2 years ago.
- victorp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7You forgot about the comment where someone makes fun of someones sexuality...
oh by the way, your all gay ;) - daldredge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Jonathan D. Eisenhamer helped write the book - why wasn't he given credit in the summary or the blog entry?
- victorp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5right, my bad...forgot that one
- noodlez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5he's not a digg rockstar like elliott
- matthawaii, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10Everyone has their first comment/Digg.
What a hater. - lord2800, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No. What I do is precompile a template using search/replace in whatever manner you desire, and turn it into a php-parsable file. I do this on a as-needed basis, and it executes in a fraction of the time it would take. If you notice, a similar scheme is used by another large php project, namely phpBB(even YOU have to recognize that phpBB hosts more users at once without any problems with loading speed).

That is so funny I nearly **** myself. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5"Hi, I'm free advertising, because anything pro-Digg will always be believed".
- bertdevriese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Seumas: you can achieve this by using smarty... works great
http://smarty.PHP.net - lord2800, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@r2d7:
Compared to anything in .NET, PHP is a breath of fresh air. I'll take my echo'ed stream of html over your 'application-like' page any day, thank you very much. And string replacement(a technique I use in template design) is much faster than regular expressions(and frankly, constant regular expressions are very fast). - paulmdx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@noodlez: "if you want to do AI, use prolog."
It's not often you see someone promoting prolog on Digg! Or anywhere!
It's the most backwards language ever, but SO well suited to certain problems. (Natural language processing, depth first search, route finding..)
Now we just need Prolog on Rails so we can write web apps in a recursive language. - daldredge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@CB you mean like when they start threatening their fans?
- ThankTheCheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@jeffbailey
..and when some geek points out the correct way to say the same thing with programming syntax
you're == you are
;) - neondonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2php for web use only? hah. apparently you've never seen anything like http://www.webmin.com/ , which is basically a collection of cgi programs. something like this could be done in php as well.
"Plus, people new to the world of programming and scripting have to start with something, I guess." ... condescension. - AF-Geek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1THAT should have been a blog post! I'd have Dugg it. (I might have even commented!)
- mojaam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hope I will be able to attend the DCPHP in October.
- cheekybastard, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Really? There are that many chicks on Digg? Or are you just speaking for someone else other than yourself?
The creators of Digg are only cool until they bow down to their corporate overlords. One day Kevin, Eli etc. will get a big fat check, and the rest of us end up with MyDiggDotSpace. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1phpBB runs great .... once it's got a pile of cpu's to chew on. Does it still needing one a dedicated once there's a couple thousand members lol?
Regardless of the templating they use I would steer clear of using the poster-child for "my site got h4x0rzed" as justification. ;) - sputza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I will probably buy the book... add it to my PHP collection.

Get off your high horse and give .Net a go, it's an excellent dev framework... - bmharris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My guess is this book talks about utilizing what PHP5 has to offer, and writing true object oriented code in PHP, which there are many people that don't do, or realize you can, especially with PHP 5. Sure there are resources out there, and sure this book is there to make someone $, but a lot of people prefer books over on line content for learning also.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1So you load an entire file into a string and then do a search/replace ... or a regular expression ... on a progressively bigger string.
And that's better than .NET with controls you can place anywhere, then access from anywhere at any stage during, pre or post rendering .... I see. - antron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1That was tranny.
- sembetu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Theory proven.

http://digg.com/about/eli - macmichael01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Is PHP really that hard to understand or so complex that we need to create another reference book? The website seems to have a sufficient amount of knowledge let alone trying to market a reference book. The PHP website = FREE reference guide or this reference book = $$
- lord2800, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1[EDIT] Stupid commenting system. Missed my freaking 'reply' instead of just 'post'.

{The Digg comment system REALLY needs to be less buggy... The V2 version was nearly perfect, apart from when it ran out of time during editing, then strange things happened} - deggiweg, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I seriously think that theres a good amount of people here who would actually blow the creators of digg if they had the chance
