- negativefx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+61Which site has an issue? I'm confused...is it digg.com, or the site that's down?
- RatherDashing, on 10/12/2007, -12/+61step 1) add 3 lines to your .htaccess
step 2) ???
step 3) Profit!
I think digg is doing just fine without all this..... - MagicBobert, on 10/12/2007, -19/+64Open Source > .NET
- Soave, on 10/12/2007, -7/+49How can your code help Digg if your own page can't even stay up for more than 60 diggs?
- ArchieAndrews, on 10/12/2007, -13/+49Q: What do you call 100 dead SEO's at the bottom of a lake?
A: A good start. - gldfshnpcklejar, on 10/12/2007, -5/+39SPOILER: The 3 lines of code are:
<marquee>
hello world
</marquee> - Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -10/+34bury me
- electricpeak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24The page took a while to load for me, so here's the meat of it:
"I noticed that digg can be reached through both http://www.digg.com and http://digg.com. I don't know if you're aware of this, but some of the cool kids are redirecting requests for the www version of their site to the non-www version. Why would they do such a thing? Aside from appearances, they're probably doing this because having a single, canonical version of every URL on your site improves your rankings at search engines.
According to netcraft you appear to be running Apache, so you could easily fix this canonicalization problem with three lines of code in your configuration file:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^digg.com
RewriteRule ^/(.*) http://digg.com/$1 [R=301,L]" - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23Or pretend to be the prince of nigeria...some people make tons of money doing that!
- macaddct1984, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19I just saved a bunch of money by switching to three lines of code.
- ajmoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Kevin Ross? Does he paint fluffy little trees too?
- bjcrowe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I was hoping it would be something to fix the search
- pirana0, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Sorry Nougat I left my shovel in the other thread.
- firblitz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I somehow am missing the connection between www or sans-www and a million dollars.
- fabriciom, on 10/12/2007, -12/+22.NET and all its bulky control state data. I don't think so. Last thing I would suggest to save money is move to the Microsoft platform. Excuse me sir, if you don't want to catch HIV move to Africa.
- tfinniga, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Yup, there's nothing like a friendly piece of advice from an SEO to digg on improving pagerank. Digg.com badly needs improved pagerank. And the pure altruism of such an individual is a breath of fresh air - he has absolutely nothing to gain by hitting the front page of digg.
Certainly this action will turn the tide of opinion. - Wisgary, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11One thing I don't get is why the hell does digg have to re-download all the images every damn time it opens? FFS.
- ManInTheBunker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Man, you ain't kiddin'! I find myself googling "site:digg.com (string)" instead most of the time.
- metafore, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15http://www.google.com/search?q=define+irony
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Why am I not surprised that this news item was quickly removed from the front page....
- z0l0pht, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Scripting != Programming. Don't quit the day job.
- vangogh99, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11RatherDashing, I don't think the post is implying that Digg isn't doing well. The point is that with a very simple addition it could do better.
- Cl1mh4224rd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8...or Digg's reliance on prototype.js.
Please, for the love of God, people. FIX THIS. At only 43 comments this very page takes ~8 seconds to load... on 6Mb/s broadband. Checking out the comments on stories with 300+ is like chewing glass. - TheElectricMonk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10http://www.seomoz.org.nyud.net:8080/blog/dear-digg-million-code
- cheeze_ballz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5yes, www is deprecated -- this site explains a little why (however, I notice that it hasn't been updated in a while). http://no-www.org/
- DCstewieG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I don't know about you guys but I think this is a completely unshady and desirable change. Yeah SEO is dirty work but this doesn't involve any of that, just good site administration.
- ImOscar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5A penny saved is a penny earned, and vice versa.
- anonyjames, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7This isn't to save money, it's to improve search engine rankings. That can make Digg more money, but I don't see how it would save any money at all.
I don't think it's really an issue. When I search Google for a story that was on Digg, I never get separate entries for the http://digg.com and http://www.digg.com versions.
Also, if their tip does in fact help search engine rankings (which it probably doesn't), it is more showing a fault of the search engine algorithm than Digg's setup. - Brajeshwar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8The comment system on the originating website is down, thus I would suggest doing a generic .htaccess code than defining digg.com specifically.
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.(.*)
RewriteRule ^(.*) http://%1/$1 [R,L] - cmiz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@jeffness: There are a lot of open source .NET applications (well maybe not a lot), but .NET is a closed source language and hence it is called "closed source". You can't see or change anything about its particular implementation. Just because you can release code that you write in it doesn't mean it's free and open.
@fkr2: .NET isn't really a bad platform... but its advantage is that its full featured and comes with lots of things built in for you. This makes it easy to develop on, but somewhat slower. That's the opposite of what digg needs. - winnch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6SEO matters to ANY web site that just wants to make money, and that is the point of digg.
- Cl1mh4224rd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Have you found pointing to non-dub is better for SEO?"
The only practical benefit, as far as I can tell, is that it's shorter to type. A *lot* of people still assume all websites have to be preceded with "www.", though. - GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12What's better then ten SEO's nailed to a tree?
One SEO nailed to ten trees.
Especially when their comment ends "Sincerely yours, www.nailedtotrees.blogspot.com" - winnch, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I hope you're not from an English-speaking country.
- Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Every little bit helps. This is certainly a little bit.
- inmatarian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This isn't so much saving as it is generating new revenue.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The dial up experience is just part of the novelty digg provides its users.
- winnch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I live in the world of SEO and always looking for best practice. We rewrite rule all NON-www back to WWW. I think this makes more sense, rather than taking the other route. Have you found pointing to non-dub is better for SEO?
- d00d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31. Come up with an old, site non-specific tip.
2. Apply it to Digg.
3. Profit - alteratti, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^digg.com
RewriteRule ^/(.*) http://digg.com/$1 [R=301,L] - johnhamman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I dont understand why this would be buried, It's not a negative suggestion, nor implying anything bad about digg. It's merely a open letter. It makes sense and is good practices.
- jspegele, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3would you be referring to the wonderful article with no bandwidth?
- gsimon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I thought the whole idea was that users vote on digg and the more diggs, the higher the post climbs. It's not about what digg doesnt want people to see, who are they to decide (oh yea, their digg).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I hope this guy in the article can help them fix their search feature too. I haven't run a search yet on digg.com that did not time out or return successfully.
- Sicarul, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@Wisgary:
That's strange, mine doesn't load the images over and over, only once or twice in a day(And i come a lot). What it does load is the page itself, the tables and such. - 0x41, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Not sure about saving a million dollars, but if you ever want to lose, say about all of your millions, here's a line:
rrm -rf /
You're welcome, digg. - gweezil, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I just KNEW when I read that pompous ass headline that the site would be down due to the digg effect.
Irony smiles on you this day, subby. - fbliss, on 10/12/2007, -10/+9More to the point, are you all so high on digg that you can't just show a little appreciation for someone's suggestion for the site?
You f-in people don't deserve to be here if sarcasm represents your contribution to Digg. If you want to do that, go visit SA. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3bury
- iainwall, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Digg get 10's of millions of views a month. By Geeks. Any self-respecting Geek will go straight to the source, rather then searching in Google. Do you search every Digg story in Google?
No. -
