Your asinine assertions that Emily's story is both fake, and moronic is both ridiculous and naive. Being the source of the story, I can assure you that I am quite lucky to have her as my girlfriend and she was not forced into anything at gunpoint.
Also, your attempt to stereotype me into being into "prepackaged lifestyles" and "appearances" because I make a living on the Macintohs platform may be one of the most ignorant things I have ever read on the Internet. Congratulations on making me realize how foolish people on sites like Digg and Slashdot can be.
Perhaps the next time you want to make such bold accusations you will think about what you say before spreading it around the Internet. Probably not though. After all, this is the Internet, where you can say anything you want with nary the consequence. Get a clue. - jav1231, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11A geek with a girlfriend? FAKE! No digg!
- mobby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I love the comment by tikki. lol clearly some genetic flaws in this gene pool. I can't wait to see the kids.
Just watch this:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1539922531377218673 - Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My wife heartily agrees with the articles... except for one: if she pops into my room wearing a cute little teddy, I'll take a break. Usually the screen saver doesn't get to kick on, but that's because us developers are efficient at everything.
- mkengstrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh, one more comment (then I'll get off the computer - I swear!).
"Work" and "Work right before a deadline" are to completely different things. I'm sure Emily has many days where her boyfriend is sweet, caring, and attentive - they just don't happen to occur during major software releases. - Smarterdanu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ladies, next time you go looking for a man, don’t check out the local bar scene. Think Different.
^^ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This Digg submission perfectly illustrates exactly what separates Digg from Slashdot. We date, and in fact have females posting here. Slashdot people are actually proud of being low-lives with horrible hygiene and no real-life friends.
- EmilyHambidge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thank you, mkengstrom, you are exactly right. Maybe I should have put a disclaimed that said those without a sense of humor shouldn't read it. But I stand by what I said, and I am unbelieveably proud to be with someone who is passionate about what he does.
- apotropaic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ok, apotropaic is my husband... I relate to this story but being MARRIED to a geek... it's kinda like this... the day I had my baby I called him from the hospital and said.. "What do you think about today?" After a long explanation that basically boiled down to that I was speaking about having his baby today... he explained that there was sort of this deadline and today wasn't really good. He was by my side shortly but soon was accross the street at St. Louis Bread Co using their internet.
- EmilyHambidge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did you seriously just go through all of my Flickr photos to find those?!?! Hahaha! I don't think I'm the one that has problems.
- Lewisham, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@*blu*
Damn right. My girlfriend always comes first, screw the project. If she needs me (like really *needs* me), I'm there. And sex? Jeez, there is no pay cheque worth giving that up. - mbrindam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well... Umm... She's got her own domain name & a blog. She's a geek too, at least to some level. I don't think it's a fake, but I think she, at minimum, loses some credibility.
- acidzebra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All I can say is, if he's managing your server/bandwidth, you could've chosen a better geek ;)
- Zorlen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Emily and Justin are definitely not the ones with a problem. Easy to spot the non-developers in the comments above.
BTW, your boyfriend playing xbox all day long is NOT the same thing as a developer WORKING all day long. Anyone who chooses a game over their partner has a problem -- a serious problem. Of course if you and your partner play the game together -- all the better. - serendipitous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You guys so completely didn't get my point of posting this. I have gone through these types of situations as well where my boyfriend just has to get things done. This piece that Emily wrote wasn't just about complaining about what her boyfriend and her goes through but she puts it into a humorous sense for all the girls who seem to have go through this at some point too.
I know I could definitely relate to A LOT mostly all the points she pointed out, but that doesn't mean my boyfriend is a big jerk who doesn't pay attention to me.
I posted this because I thought it was a cute read, and it would have been fun for you tech geeks out there to show this to your girlfriends as well and have a little laugh together. Because we(geek gf's) probably all have to go through our boyfriends having things that they HAVE to complete before they can give their attention to us.
A lot of you didn't get the point of this.. but I'm sure you guys don't even understand most of it.
P.S. Sorry Emily for overloading your server. I just wanted to share with everyone what I thought was a great read! - headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's too bad that hours of concentration, frustration, and caffeine kills the sex drive. It's just an unfair world.
- PDelahanty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If I had a girlfriend, I'd show her this article. :/
- SpeedyG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Some people take Digg way too seriously.
This is a fun little piece, it's written tongue-in-cheek, and if it helps a GF understand what makes a BF tick (or vice versa), then all the better.
There's no need for the "oh, he's not REALLY a geek" or "he should get his priorities straight" comments. - ubernerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think it's worth pointing out that it's not just Apple developers or even computer geeks who are like this... having suffered my girlfriends through long hours of staring at the back of my head while I prove theorems, I can identify with the subject of this article just as much as any of my computer-geek friends. I think I speak for all of us geek types when I say that you who can appreciate how we are (and not just dismiss us as "emotionally crippled" as some commenters have done) are deeply appreciated.
- c.trinity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wish i could punch my bf when he is playing on his xbox/ps2 hours and hours....But then again,he wish he could punch me too for spending most of my time between 5 machines, tons of errors, smoke and coffee,"don't disturb me" looks...
I called it even and he did too.
At the end,you only have to know how to deal with the one you chose to spend your life with.
It's called, maturity and acceptance. - *blu*, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1not true. you can be a badass techie and still have your priorities straight. my boyfriend = prime example.
- rubbsdecvik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Who are any of you to judge Justin and Emily one way or another? I for one am a student probably destined to go into software development. I am lucky enough to have found a sexy, intelligent, and understanding girlfriend. If she feels comfortable with him and appreciates his work. I think that she has a good thing going for her. In no way did this post say that on times when Justin was just normally working (ie no upcoming deadline), that he was ignoring her. From what I could gather, he appreciates her just as much.
I know for a fact that I appreciate my girlfriend. I love her more than anyone on this earth. But sometimes you just have to get things done. My girlfriend is a wonderful enough person to realize this.
Oh and if you said that she must be either fat or ugly, you are a loser. Here is why. A) By insulting someone you don't even know, you are showing what kind of person you really are. And if you have a girlfriend or ever hope to get one you best hope she doesn't see that comment. B) If you were smart you would have seen the flcker links she had on her blog. She is neither fat nor ugly. Get your head out of you butt and grow up.
Serendipitous thank you for the good digg.
emilyhambidge Thank you for the good post.
To all you out there who know how it really works, doesn't it feel good to know that the world is full of good women like Emily and my girlfriend Adrienne? I feel like the luckiest person in the world when I'm with her. - Hrekum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Too funny. I dugg it.
- lijn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm a geek.
I have a husband.
Met him in the local bar scene/
:-) - rdalert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone who is negatively critiquing this story clearly can't see it for what it is. Screw them. I think it's a good digg.
- TheSiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Funny. When me and my buddies were working on our Rails Day project, my girlfriend came by our apartment and cooked dinner for me.
- Chealion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think Justin summed up everything here the best:

Digg for Emily being cool and writing things, and props to Justin for being so honest and not spewing hate against the "internet". - wormeyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I must not be geek enought if i check out women :p
- piznut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This sounds like a story about 2 people who actually know how to relate to each in a mature fashion; Like adults. Imagine that!
There are absolutely no rules about 'how relationships are supposed to work'. It sounds like they are both getting what they want. Who are we to question that? - Doragnar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You know what plain and simple no one has the right to judge here. where do you guys get off saying Justin is gay or has incorrect priorities? or that Emily should leave him because he's some sort of a dirt bag?
To me all this sounds like a bunch of jealous people who only envy Justin and Emily because they have a good thing going for them. These envious people just want to ruin it for them so that they may be unhappy as well.
To them I say GROW UP! The way two people live their lives together is of no concern of yours unless they ask it of you.
To Justin and Emily
I wish you both a happy life, have fun times, and many fond memories. - 42kami, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0funny, insightful. sad, but true -- but as someone else commented, this could be easily the life of an SO of any other career-driven workaholic, mac fiend or not.
and damn, many of you have absolutely no sense of humor. - tmyknocker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is old. get with the program.
- tmyknocker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0did you digg yourself?
- shanmac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Funny story, but even a geek like myself can drag myself off the computer to be with my gf. It is possible to have the best of both worlds.
- h0dg3s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0who cares apple sucks LAME

Smoking is bad for health. Stop smoking and he will give you more time. ;) - StephnDolenc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Ladies, next time you go looking for a man, don’t check out the local bar scene. Think Different."
that's the best conclusion possible - electronicmaji, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I rofled...dig
- veritech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Where does a geek go to pick up a geek girl, the computer lab??
- spygirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My geek boy is a lead software tester for a smaller software company. I can totally relate to this. We've been together for over four years and I wouldn't change anything about him. And she's right, number ten is an awesome experience. And I usually get my patience rewarded. ;)
- uthaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dude, back away from the keyboard and hit the GF...
- 01Techman10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's pretty funny.
- mkengstrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I found my husband when he joined my RPG group. My first words? "Hey new guy - get the #$%@ outta my chair!" ;)
I'm not suggesting that this is a good method to use and may have varying results ;) - serendipitous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0slhilbert! lol, I loved the link you posted up!
- sebastiangomez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I might be a geek when it comes to computers and tech news but if a woman is running after me in heels with a teddy on.. She's definitely getting' laid.

- dashifen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Totally just sent this one to my wife ;)
