- netferret, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30heres the video, watched it a week ago, very funny:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4Wy7gRGgeA - slaughterhause, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28So when I first heard this song I was a computer programmer working on web-based trainers (login pages, specifically) and I had TWO managers named Rob.
Sweet. - skored, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26Terrific! At first I just read the lyrics and still thought it was great. Then I listened to it: A+
- jillmatrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16If you like Code Monkey, you'll probably also like his Re: Your Brain (about co-workers who turn into zombies) and Skullcrusher Mountain (a mad scientist tale of love and mysterious creatures made of monkeys and ponies). Don't miss his covers, though. Baby Got Back, We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions and Blue Raincoat are all amazing, although a Leonard Cohen cover is never going to be funny.
- bigredgpk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Please tell that to my Hammer parachute pants
- 3monkeys, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16http://3monkeyweb.com/3monkeys/2007/01/16/code-monkey/ The song and all the videos
- celestial, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18*starts moshpit at office*
- greymonk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Dupe story, yes... but still an excellent song and Jonathan deserves to be on the front page often.
- washcapsfan37, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I had to laugh a little to myself when I saw this. I had a meeting with my manager (named Rob of course) to discuss the login page for our site yesterday. I was singing this song to myself during half the meeting. I just hope he doesn't think my "output stinks" or that my "code not functional or elegant".
- Ryosen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11He's selling the songs for $1 and, having bought most of them, they're very well worth it. Coulton is an amazing songwriter and even better live. YouTube (et al) have a number of vids of his performances.
That said, if you're so hard up and determined to rip the guy off, don't bother trying to figure out the naming convention for the songs or look at his html code. He gives his songs away for free via his podcast, Thing A Week. Any of the songs from the Thing A Week series (52 in all) are freely available, Code Monkey included.
Since I'm already up here on my soapbox, for those people like myself who refuse to buy RIAA-controlled music and go on at length about how the RIAA and the record companies are no longer needed and that we should all buy music directly from the artists - here is your chance. One dollar is all it takes to show artists world-wide that they can make it on their own and don't need to give in to the endentured servitude that is a record company contract. - bobothn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11That guy is really smart. it was on several high traffic websites and net@night. so he directly linked the mp3 file to nyud.net
- phej, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11@ DanaK
The digg you linked to was submitted 232 days ago.
Last time I checked, a year was 365 days and a year or two was anywhere between 365 and 730 days. 232 falls nowhere between that. You are incorrect, sir. - pcx99, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Good stuff never goes out of style ;)
- balibones, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16I LOVE IT!!!! Just sent it to my fellow monkies here at work. I'm going to give a donation it's so good.
- cannibaljp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9it is quite great - but in internet age it's ancient.
this song was first introduced to me over a year ago...
doing the math... that makes this song... roughly 430 iYears old?
i think that's right... - pcx99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Since the song is licensed under the creative commons there are a LOT of videos, the one you linked to, however, is probably the best of the lot :)
- Fordi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@Pepper:
That's very nice, but the artist appears to be attempting to sell the mp3. Seeing as it's only a buck, how about at least some of us pay for the download, eh?
That said, you can get the MP3 link by looking at the output from a document.write. Here's a scriptlet to do the job from any del.icio.us play button.
Use: Make a bookmark with the following contents. Start playing the song, then click the bookmark. A new window/tab will open with the link and an object/embed tag for reposting the song in your own page.
If you have the spare green, buy his stuff. No need to swipe from a good artist if you can afford not to.
Screw it; the link won't wrap. http://www.elflord.net/mp3swipe.html will have the bookmark in a few. - Remy_LeBeau, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@eyeaml337
Ok, listen here, jackass, you do not speak the truth. Digg launched on December 5th 2004. Jonathan released "Code Monkey" as part of his "Thing a Week" project on April 14th, 2006. So, clearly this was not on Digg three years ago, eh? Quit talkin' out of your ass. - giid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Not to be picky, but in the video, that looks more like an ape, not a monkey. Regardless, I just sent him a buck--good song.
- kerrin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think you will find that his official Code Monkey page on his site also has the song and all the videos (including the one not on the site you linked to).

Although a second place to get them is a good thing, incase the traffic to his site gets too much for it to handle. - uofmpike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Jonathon Coulton at it again, his Baby Got Back cover was awesome too.
- Zal91, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Fellow Binrev(ers), this was the closing song a (fairly) recent episode of BinRev Radio.
- Eptiger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This song is very old, but I'll digg it because it's a classic.
His best song is definitely his cover of "Baby Got Back". It's a must-listen. - MrMaveric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Good fun song.
Digg+ - DanaK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ phej
so digg is the end all be all of when music is created in the world? The story is 232 days but I had heard it before it was on digg and I know it was a co-worker who quit almost 2 yrs ago who played it at my desk. w/e try to enjoy your weekend without too much more neuroticism lol - sir_zman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've been listening to his stuff for over a year now, and he rocks. Most all of his stuff is great.
- mobfunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Saw him live in Nov of 2006 he played this soung and I immediately loved it...
The guy is amazing he wrote a song a week for a year...
heres hoping he blows up - imdwalrus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Jonathan Coulton is absolutely amazing - one of the best "nerd rock" artists I've come across. If you're interested in hearing more of his stuff for free, he did a five song EP for Popular Science in 2005. It's called "Our Bodies, Ourselves, Our Cybernetic Arms," and it's well worth the listen.

Also, since it hasn't been mentioned (and since his site's dead at the moment), Code Monkey was part of a project called Thing A Week, where Coulton released a song under the Creative Commons license every week for a year. There's a ton of good material in those 52 songs, and they're all still available via the iTunes podcast or his site.
Jonathan Coulton is one of the first times in my life where I've used my meager college student budget to support someone who's using the Creative Commons license. He's one of my favorite artists now, and throwing him a few bones for physical copies of his "Smoking Monkey" and "Where Tradition Meets Tomorrow" albums was the least I could do. - rnelsonee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Also, John Hodgeman's audiobook is available for free on iTunes (he's the "I'm a PC" guy from the Daily Show) and Jonathan Coulton is in it the whole time talking with Hodgeman. He plays guitar a lot too... not as good as Coulton's other songs, but I figured I'd mention it.
Oh, and a lot of Coulton's songs are free, including Code monkey (site is down for the moment):
http://www.jonathancoulton.com/ - prelud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't know if you understand, but this song makes me sad a little....
- kitta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I bought Code Monkey on iTunes ages ago (the fact I bought music shows how much I liked it) and it's been at the top of my play list ever since then. Great song.
- kerrin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There is a sequal to the Code Monkey video Spiff did:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxLLiTkiOaQ
It uses a remix of Code Monkey. - audioquester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2He just got a buck from me...and i think I'll buy a couple for a couple friends. This song just made my day...though it should make me a little depressed :)
Thanks - koregaonpark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh, was that him with Hodgeman? Interesting!
- justncase80, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2ooooold
- Dolomite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Code Monkey is classic, but his cover of Baby Got Back is his best work yet.
- Jassman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Jonathan Coulton is awesome. His song Mandelbrot Set (about the mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot) is even better than Code Monkey.
- bl4cklight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Funny. Available for quick purchase on iTunes :-)
- Felshadow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2kinda old, but still dugg
- KevInTx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This was awesome! I got a real laugh out of it. :) Double Digg!
- BevansDesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The first song I ever heard from him (and still my favorite) was "Re: Your Brains". I recommend that people check that one out too. It's sort of a negotiation between co-workers, with one being a zombie.
This guy writes some really clever lyrics (and catchy tunes too). As soon as I have some money, I'm going to buy a few songs. - TrueVox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hilarious! Personally, I'm rather fond of the Code Monkey Dance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lLRBiEBRAc
- robg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1GD. I have been with digg for ages.. each time i try and post a digg, it's already there.. so i give up. I don't think I've posted one yet that has actuaully made it through.. because some jerk ass has beat me to the punch. So, I'm reading through my rss feeds tonight, and what do I see in digg... code monkey song. Son of a. Dude. For real. It isn't even fair that you've dugg this song. You can't digg songs, it's not in the rule book yet. Jeeze. Anyhow, It's been an ipod staple for a while now, actually, It was most played so much, I think my friends and I are waiting for a remix version or something to spice that one up some. Oh yeah, one more funny thing - my name is rob, and i'm a manager of a web department - and even cooler, I have ONE web developer working for me.. he's my code monkey... :) and for real - we have meetings on monday mornings. seriously.. !
- YoungAmerican, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Jonathan performed this song and a few others on my radio show / podcast recently. You can download the live performances, and the show (which also features John Hodgman) at this URL:
http://www.maximumfun.org/blog/2006/10/podcast-best-friends-with-john-hodgman.html - Dolomite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great song, I remember listening to this all the time when it first came out... glad someone dugg it up again.
- dcormier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Old, but still very funny.
- TrueVox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Code Monkey like Tab and Mountain Dew!
- Seizure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I remember that when it came out. Good times.
- Grimboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ok, I'm not a flash fanboy or anything and as a linux user macromedia/adobe have pissed me off more than once but please inform me of another equally cross-browser, stable, unannoying way of playing sound without actually downloading the file. For me object and embed just don't cut it. I think this is one of the cases where a little flash is acceptable.
- koregaonpark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I got off your site weeks ago, Stacy. Thanks for posting it. :-)
