- rdelon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is *not* a very good test ...
Other hosts such as DreamHost or WebFaction handle Digg and Slashdot regularly with no problem, without a "grid of servers" ...
"Grid hosting" is mostly a marketing buzzwork. In practice a shared hosting server is enough for 99.9% of people. For the few that need more the answer is in true dedicated servers and not grid hosting, since the bottleneck is usually the database, which grid hosting doesn't spread over multiple servers. - johnnythawte, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm personally very interested to see if their ruby on rails container is for real.
- rrbaker, on 01/15/2009, -2/+3This is a great test.. hope more people see it and digg so we can check out the results.
- hkcavalier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A BlueArc firmware bug for a section of The Grid's storage did cause outage on Sat. the 28th. It was fixed as quickly as possible and the (mt) team did a great job handling this. Other minor issues that have popped up since we rolled this out on Oct. 17th have been corrected or addressed. With over 9,500 domains in less than 2 weeks and some great diggs (links below) I'd say the Grid-Server platform has done well and will only continue to get better.

- rosshosman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1MediaTemple can't even stand up regularly let alone to the digg effect, over 3 hours downtime so far this month, it is disgusting.
- www.thehostguru.com - payscroller, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Looks like the test never did really fly. This submission was buried around 9:00EST Oct 18th with 28 diggs, the highest in the upcoming queue at that time. So the site never had a decent amount of traffic to justify any stressing or loading.
diafel, I don't think I am gaming Digg, Spike the Vote is. ;)
Brajeshwar, johnnythawte, This is what I am also interested in finding too. We benchmarked the performance of the RoR container too, and you can read that on our blog. (mt) Media Temple’s Ruby on Rails on Grid - http://blog.payscroll.com/?p=8
rdelon, It's true that many hosts handle the "Digg Effect" graciously, but mostly og them, are not Ruby On Rails hosting. And this particularly test's intention was to stress the RUBY ON RAILS container offer by Media Temple.
bohemicus, Its too bad this got buried before it could fly, so the results were not very significant. And you can see the page views on the test site too. And its not very high either ;(
Thanks for all who Digged This! If you think we should give another shot at this. Please comment here and I will try to do another submission. - Brajeshwar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I think this is a good test, I have over 6 or 7 sites on MediaTemple. I am thinking of combining them into just 2 as they now have more juice to handle many sites.
- bohemicus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This is a perfectly legitimate use of Digg - in the true spirit of citizen journalism - this is testing claims by a large company. I'm personally very interested the result.
Also, for sites with complex CMS with lots of database work (such as Drupal), Dreamhost is not enough. In a shared hosting situation not only do you slow down yourself but also others on the server. So the grid, if it really works - as it seems to so far, is actually a revolutionary idea. - pbeesley1989, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Normally I shun this type of thing but the host is actually welcoming this testing - digg on!
- payscroller, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Come on, people, lets work harder!
- diafel, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4This guy is gaming Digg
