Why are people so concerned with having ads on webpages? People on digg often comment on how great it is that they have adblock installed so they don't see ads - usually with an undertone of disdain for the entire idea of advertising on the internet.
We all love the internet, and most of us really enjoy niche content that comes from blogs and small websites run by individuals or small companies - but we hate ads? These bloggers and small businesses are supported financially by the ads - without them, most people wouldn't bother to pay for hosting and take the time to create the content we enjoy.
So - why use adblock? - cds0528, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6*Bookmarks*
I doubt I would use many of these, but it's nice to have alternatives. Unfortunately, quite a few of these requires you to pay a fee just to start using it. Adsense is free. - lechatron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Does adding a question mark to a title make it ridiculous?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QX5-YUVDgcg - elektricki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Good. Adsense conveniently decided to ban me $3 short of getting a check. They ban for a "reason" but you get no explanation. It's a pretty biased, crappy system really. I would still like to know what I did. It's a common story I think...
- elektricki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Not unless you know the most secretive arts of blackmail or banging Larry Page's wife.
- 13tongimp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was banned from adsense and accused of click fraud and was not give a chance to appeal. I don't ever recall clicking on my own site's ads except maybe once or twice on accident while checking things out. They have terrible customer service when it comes to that type of situation. I got nothing but automated responses when I tried to get details on why they dropped me.
I'm using AdBrite now, but I'm thinking about checking into Yahoo's deal. - darthkiera, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The thing that sucks about the services listed is that it would be infinitely more useful to have a comparison sheet instead of just a huge page of links. Sure, some of the services charge for the privilege of using them, but it would help things a lot to know which ones do, which ones don't, and how much they pay.
Maybe there's a wiki or public-accountability firm somewhere that keeps track of these things? For now I'm going to go off and start clicking links and reading policies, but there's got to be a better way. - elektricki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Japanese music news and reviews. What is so "supposed" and "spammy" about that?
- goodfeets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was banned by adsense as well. My average was 6 clicks per day and it took me several months to get to the point where I could request a check. The very day I hit $50 my account was canceled for "click fraud." My appeal was shot down without explanation.
I've been trying out a couple of different ad providers, bidvertiser and clicksor. The relevancy of the ads they provide is highly questionable. Examples of the ads provided include "Top 10 Drug Rehab Centers" and "Shopping for Hitler? Find all your Hitler needs at Shopping.com"
In the month or so post adsense, the new ads have received only 6 clicks each, for a grand total of $1.80. If the clicks don't pick up soon, I'll just clean the ads off my site and forget the whole thing. - Bisqwit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1According to my experiences, no.
http://ask.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/05/05/0139247 -- Nonsense with Google's Adsense?
(The same sentiment also mentioned here: digg.com/tech_news/The_nonsense_about_AdSense ) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have heard my friends also say they have been banned. What happens is if someone is jealous of you, they can come and click lots of ads for a few days and get you banned.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone has any past experience with crisp ads?
- pinoyazrael, on 02/26/2009, -0/+1Thanks for sharing the list, Oh John Chow!
http://www.ridiculousblogger.com - elektricki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Says another SEO superpower...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The article does say they are going to be building a new site around the list that will give much more information.
- gd007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1my adsense a/c was cancelled. is there anyway to get it back?
- elektricki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm not impressed with AdBrite. I went from doing $20-30 days on google to doing $.17 in four days with AdBrite. I honestly think they're just not as attractive or relevant as google, sadly.
- granty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have been using Adsense/Adwords Overture/Yahoo for ages and I reckon wen you see a site with adsense on it click on the ads if u like the content , it helps smaller websites with good content keep alive..
Just dont click on your own ads cos you'll get banned.. - cds0528, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If/when this page ever gets posted, someone please submit it to digg. there's gotta be a wikipedia entry somewhere for this... under what though?
- dutter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As one commenter on chow's site wrote, this is a great list for sharpening those AdBlock filters. :)
- ramjacan, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1Google ads is not discrete by any means, its clogging the internet with their spam c**p ads, come on.. its just a bunch of amateurs using arbitrage and people paying others to click illegally on their ads.. any real web site sells their ads based on CPM, thanks to whoever posted this as the list is better than nothing, I am done with Google adsense.
- Dotnetsky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1People who use ad blockers are generally immature people with half a brain who think they are "hot *****".. If ads are non-intrusive, well-placed and not "in -your-face", anybody who provides useful content is entitled to make an attempt to support their efforts with some revenue. Besides, ad blockers can be defeated anyway with a little common sense and good technology.
- HMTKSteve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can understand using ad-block if you are on dial-up and the site you visit is full of large banner ads that suck up your bandwidth but... If you are on broadband, what's a few extra bits?
What about text ads... Does it really kill you to look at them? Some people get paid per impression... Blocking ads just kills the sites you like to visit. - willowy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good article, I'm sure it will be of use to those who want to advertise.
Personally as someone who doesn't want to be advertised AT, I'm very fond of Google AdSense. They're generally discreet, small text-based ads that almost never jar me. For months when I first started using Gmail I was gushing about how there were no ads, until someone pointed out to me that there WERE ads, see, on the right hand side...? They're really a much better alternative than the eighty thousandth HIT THE MONKEY WIN A FREE HD-TV *BLINKBLINKBLINK* ads. - farffa, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1It´s good to have several options besides adsense.Dugg!
- sagien, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, or overzelous friends who do not know any better and think they're "helping you out" and go click crazy on your ads.
It's happened to me, and Google doesn't give you an appeal. Just kinda have to deal. - elektricki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's too bad I didn't see that adlogger thing before I got banned. Heh.
- BrotherLion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Has anyone seen much difference in traffic between running a site from a traditional domain vs. one from within Blogger or something similar?
- karkalim, on 06/20/2009, -0/+0Adsense is a waste. Cost per action (CPA) so much more rewarding. http://www.squidoo.com/aboutsecretcashblueprint
- komokuten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As an advertiser, the most important thing you should look for in an alternative to Google's Ad Sense is transparency. With Google, you will never know the true performance of your ads. Google just forks over a sum of money at the end of the month and says "take it or leave it." There are ad marketplaces out there such as Right Media that are rallying around a more free market approach by making all data in the network transparent. This is something that should make Google pretty nervous.
- drload, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0there are no alternatives. i have tried many of them. but they all suck.
- SatanicPengiuns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh my mistake, I get what you're saying.
- Hedison, on 04/12/2008, -0/+0Interesting but mainly useless list
Adsense and adwords rule the roost.
The best advice anyone can give is to learn adsense and adwords and make it work for you
It really is possible to earn a decent income from Google adsense. The trick is to remain within the TOS.
If you stray outside Google's terms of service, you will loose you account and getting it back is nigh impossible
More info on making money legitimately online at Affiliate Marketing Tips For Beginners - allonline, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Will have to experiment with some off these on http://www.topabc.com currently use adsense and clickbank also use ebay on another site but despite a lot clicks not a lot of earnings with it.
- pittfall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks for the great information about other areas to consider when working to get additional, targeted trafic to your site.
Thanks - komokuten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You're talking about monitoring click performance from the content provider's point of view. I'm talking about the people who provide ad inventory in the ad networks -- the people whose ads are being displayed on your web page. Google intentionally keeps these people in the dark.
Cool application, though. - AssociateSphere, on 10/24/2008, -0/+0Good articles. There are other opportunities out there. Just find which one really works for you.

Read a full review here - http://www.monetizationhub.com/adbrite-review/ - johnWinston, on 12/21/2008, -0/+0Google adsense always manages to skarue you in the end sooner or later. I am reading an article from here on digg http://topadsensekeywordsfree.blogspot.com/2008/12 ... that is taking the words right out of my mouth. I lost google earth referrals at a time when i was getting several hundred a month. I just decide to take adsense, search and all other google ads of all sites. They are a bit too large to fight. I fought them 2 years over the tagline "see your house from space" They won, if they were a person i would sock their nose.
- royljestr, on 12/09/2008, -0/+0thanks for the suggestions
- SatanicPengiuns, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Not completely true if i understood everything correctly, (http://www.adlogger.org/index.php/Main_Page) is a open source adsense tool that tracks impressions, clicks. u can even set it to help stop click fraud. Extremely useful i have it on my site and it works perfect
......shamelessplug> www.esemdesign.com - azmoviez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1As someone that uses Google AdWords for advertisements, I wouldn't even consider most of these. Hell I barely used the Google Content Network because of the rampant fraud and lackluster results. Good results almost never come from AdSense and almost always come from Google itself.
