- alanflores, on 10/12/2007, -3/+96great article. i must be a good programmer. i took kindergarten twice.
- dominasian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+32don't write something you wouldn't want to use yourself =golden rule
- ArgusSmith, on 10/12/2007, -7/+38Communism by itself is not bad. In fact, it sounds pretty great; a government only in power in order to organize the economy, serve the interests of its citizens, and remove classes. In practice, however, it's just an excuse for a dictatorship. Wonderful theory, horrible in reality, but not bad in and of itself.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -7/+31"Share everything"
Namespace violations?
" Play fair."
Friends?! [It's been said many, many times of C++, my enemy is my Friend].
"Clean up your own mess"
They invented Garbage Collection for a reason.
"Don't take things that aren't yours"
If they're not in your namespace you can't have them (unless you ask permission).
"Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody"
I'm sowwy my code hurt you, make kissie feel all betters?
"Wash your hands before you eat"
Oh dear $deity. New idea: no masturbation during coding. Period.
"Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you"
Tell that to my cardiologist.
"Live a balanced life"
Wait, are you really, really sure we're talking about programming here?
Seriously. If your name isn't Gregory House, use tact when stretching a metaphor. This one's about 10 bullets too long. - lazyeyesam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23Today's show is brought to you by the language C
- kingkilr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Also, don't write something a 2 year old couldn't figure out.
- inspecality, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1716. Strongly believe girls have cooties.
just kidding fellow programmers - nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -1/+162 year olds can't read... but if u say so.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I had my Lisp all through early education.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11" 6. Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody.
... Just don't criticize people openly. Learning is not belittling people .... "
I never learned that in kindergarten, even from the teachers, and especially the time I colored Abraham Lincoln's face blue. - boombye, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Umm I'm guessing you never went to school as a child in America. We have this thing called cooties, it's imaginary disease the girls have. Circle, circle, dot dot, now I have my cootie shot. Neener neener. Ya know?? or you don't? Either way talking about coochies while someone is talking about cooties is strange and odd. Hopefully you're not from here though.
- Promantarius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8A better way to phrase that would be "Don't design something that you wouldn't use yourself", as you may well have to write it anyway if your boss requires it :)
- turrican, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@boombye: Orange text on Black??????
Yep. Not as common as green/black, but still - common back in the day. - tybris, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Did Kindergarten Also Teach You To Start Every Word With A Capital? Or Was That The Java Class Naming Convention?
- mindsnare, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Seseme Street were right all along....
- Mirag3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Actually Communism does not work in theory. Communism presumes that a country's citizens are completely equal. However, complete inequality means that any form of centralized ruler would create an inherent inequality. Thus, to avoid anarchy (the lack of rule), a centralized leader is always appointed. Unfortunately, because the very existence of that ruler contradicts communist theories, the state inevitably turns into a dictatorship, as the ruler has no true checks on his power. So I'm afraid a Communist society just doesn't work, sorry to burst your bubble :)
- fuzzynyanko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Problem: I know a lot of adults that don't understand Algebra. Some of the whacky algorithms out there require at least Calculus to just explain.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9This is all fine and well until it's time to get paid. Believe me I'm all in favor of open source but I sure enjoy my paycheck from
- Fhionnlaoch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5All I learned in Kindergarten is how we werer only allowed to old computers with black screens and yellow/orange text while the Librarians got to use fancy computers, with colour monitors and nice screensavers (it was like a stingray, and other sea creatures, I think). Given the date (1991/2), I'd guess it was System 7 or Windows 3.1x
- pauldonnelly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Of course not. C++ is way too complicated to be taught before 3rd grade. That's why Lisp is used in early education.
- turrican, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Well, there was this one programmer at this dotcom I ran I.T. for who apparently didn't learn NOT TO WIPE BOOGERS UNDER HIS DESK...
We used to make him bring his PC over to *us* to get stuff worked on. YUCK. - ABadInAlbany, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4A 2 year old ... yeah, that might be tough.
Write elegant code, but don't sacrifice functionality or performance in an attempt to make your code readable by retards or pre-K kids. Document/comment if, when and where necessary. - Cablito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4yeah, all those millionairs are open source programmers, what a foul we comercial programmers are.
Listen up folks, I am talking to all of you programmers, even those getting 100 bucks and hour, STOP what you are doing, write free code on open source projects. Phone company, chevrolet, they will give you free services and cars if you show your svn commit log. - ronaldst, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"1. Share everything. Use open source where possible, and contribute to it when you are able. The collective wisdom of the entire community is better than the limited vision of a few large companies."
I found that one pretty narrow-minded and negative so I took the liberty of rewriting the last sentence to show the mentality of this type of person.
"1. Share everything. Use open source where possible, and contribute to it when you are able. Shun companies and closed source since the whole notion of competition is bad for you and never benefits anyone in society." - boombye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Damn I was in Kindergarten in 88 and I don't remember that stuff. Oh well, I think it's cause we had those Apple Macintosh comps to play Oregon Trail on.
- tehmoth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3orange on black, especially driven by hercules mono graphics cards.
- boombye, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Who says open source programmers don't make money? lmao
- Gerikes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+41: Use open source where possible
2. Give other technologies, frameworks, methodologies and opinions a chance.
Wait, how am I supposed to "give other technologies and frameworks a chance" if they aren't open source? - pureliquidhw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@yournamehere
I have no idea why people are digging you down. that was hilarious. - ABadInAlbany, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ArgusSmith: you need to refine your understanding of the term. Socialism is good, but communism is top-down, IMPOSED socialism, thus inevitably espousing dictatorship.
- yournamehere, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9it was lost in translation many years ago. actually it was suppose to be "girls have coochies" which it turns out is true.
- CHAD3814, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Really?!? You were in kindergarten in '91/92? Now I feel old.
And sad for you, 'cause when I was in Kindergarten we also had green-screens and amber monitors... But so did everyone else 'cause it was 1981! Seriously, your school still had monochrome monitors in 1991? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I would contribute more to open source but my Al can collecting gets in the way.........
- yournamehere, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2preliquidhw,
nice to know someone understands my demented humor - G33k0ft3chz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What about the rule: Hands are for helping not hurting? I guess that could be where you don't try to sue people using your software or to help people with your product, not just ignoring their issues.
- shirosamurai, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I did. What school did YOU go to?
- natmaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2At the University of Texas at Austin, the original article where this one came from is given to every student in the somewhat introductory course.
- jb74, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't understand some of the replies to gamer (mindsnare, cinnix, boombye). It seems to me that open source is very much analogous to communism (one definition being: "an economic or political system based on the sharing of all work and property by the whole community"), as opposed to traditional corporate software development (a la Microsoft) which could be equated to capitalism.
- jas168, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As a Linux user (as in, not troll), I've always understood that it's completely communistic... The people really are the means of its existence.
Another definition of communism: "a theory or system of social organization based on the holding of all property in common, actual ownership being ascribed to the community as a whole or to the state."
Linux is owned by the community, right? Okay. - resplence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow #7 is such a stretch.
- fu86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Never fall in love with your code."
Thats hard :) - Guard, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I wish I could click the thumbs up button 10 times for the Gregory House comment.
- Anigma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sharing is caring
- yournamehere, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1boombye,
you are clueless. it was a joke. at least someone got it. i feel for you, i really do; going to all the explicit detail. i LOLed at that. - wheezy360, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Are you serious? This isn't difficult to understand. Example: ASP.Net is not open source... but guess what... You can try it!! XD
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gimme your lunch money you wimpy *****
- Eptiger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's a great article, but a bit old ;) It was printed in the Communications of the ACM in 1999, by Robert Fulghum. The original article is a bit longer, but this covers the gist of it.
- geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I believe strongly in open source since I think fundamentally if you give and are generous with anything in life then good things will come to you tenfold. Even the bible says it, "Give, and it shall be given unto you". The Indian Vedas say this, plenty of wise men before us have talked about the power of giving. It works because in giving you are saying that you see abundance and this message is received by others and they respond with more abundance as they realize there is an infinite amount of resources out there... so they realize they have time to give. And we can see the power before our finger tips, digg, google etc, use open source. I'd go into Abraham Hicks and channeling but I'm afraid I would be seen as "crazy".
- ABadInAlbany, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@geminitojanus: dugg for some good points, but I'd digg ya up thrice over for the House reference, if I could.
my nutritionist and your cardiologist ought to get together, sound like they have some common enemies. - treehead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1> great article. i must be a good programmer. i took kindergarten twice.
No, you must be a bad programmer, that's a logical fallacy. -
