- aembleton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8They do use frames! The main window on the right that displays information about the method, is a frame.
For example, if you search for a PHP method it actually displays the relevant page from php.net. - chaosmachine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8their use of ajax instead of frames means you can't link to a specific definition. in effect, by going with ajax, they get the same presentation with less functionality and less compatibility.
- monkeycat, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Frames?!???!?!?! Long live AJAX!!!!! In all seriousness, frames are ugly in comparison.
- ajwillys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6WHAT!
The X in AJAX doesn't stand for eXtreme?!? - veracon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Wow, it uses Ajax! This makes it better htan anything else ever made!
- databasecowboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4well, that's why you're supposed to interview them and ask them questions to see what they know. And if you don't know what to ask them, sit them down at Brainbench.com and have them do a test or two. Also, investigating their references and work history could be helpful. But the best thing is to ask them to code for you on the spot. Don't worry so much about the code as to their reaction to the question.
- RobbieTheGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What a fantastic find a single spot to look up most things I need at the moment
Thanks
RobbieTheGeek - kertap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wow so useful. Hopefully they'll add j2se 1.5 in the future.
It's unfortunate that they use w3schools but I suppose they don't have much choice. - amed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2good stuff, 4sure it will come in handy, deserves a digg
- scottpatricks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is pretty sweet. I'm sure it will be updated with some javascript, etc. but very handy.
- alienvenom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's a nice website, except it isn't AJAX. It simply is two frames plus a bunch of javascript. AJAX stands for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML... The JavaScript is immediately apparent, but there is no XML. If you look at http://www.gotapi.com/main.js you will see no XML stuff, at least not what you will find in Gmail, or Flickr.
- TimRogers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Everyone likes it now, but I bet you'll revert back to using PHP.net for the stuff. I know I will.
- Phoenyx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://ql.aonic.net
real AJAX, handier reference for my needs - ThatsUnpossible, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Their use of ajax has nothing to do with linking to a definition. They just need to provide that functionality. Just like google provides it with google maps, with the "Link to this page" dynamic link that works fine with their ajax map.
- dvdgee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dugg for pure usefulness, missinghref is right, though... i don't really see any need for AJAX here.
- bugninja, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yes, they do use iframes, the search is ajaxian
- Grimdotdotdot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not so, the X in AJAX stands for XML.
Asychronous Javascript And XML.
However, you don't have to use Javascript or XML to communicate with the server asychronously, so it could really be called 'A'. - pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yeah .NET documentation would be nice, but the AJAX interface is fantastic ... they can always add .NET later on since they've got this nice framework in place :) Well done, and dugg
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2yeah, ruby and asp/asp.net would be sweet.
still, an awesome find. - JustJon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice to have all that info in one place. Wish they had javascript too, since I've been doing alot of that lately.
- CarbonAndroid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good idea. Be nice if other tech references went this way ie; c++, mfc, etc...long list
- v3xt0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's missing more than 1/2 of the PHP API Commands.
Nice concept though. - dude3609, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3dugg cuz it has php, mysql, and java.. well, and it owns. :D
- Minos, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Frames are only ugly if you make them ugly.
- Grimdotdotdot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Any sign of it being updated to include more manuals? It would be pretty easy to add more in, I'd imagine.
- patrickweber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Frames? People still use frames? Wow..
- dwb75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very cool, this will definitely come in handy. Nice work!
digg it! - maxmojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Search box is screwy, but it is cool otherwise.
- skabber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This looks like a great page that brings lots of resources together. But whats up with having the java 1.3 and 1.4.2 api docs but no 1.5?
- quade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where the perl at? I mean, if you're gonna complain about not having .NET, ruby or C, might as well complain about python or BASIC too. ;)
- cybernetic798, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The people who are telling others to just go lookup .NET stuff at msdn:
Well then you could go to the respective official references for each of the languages that are in the linked page. So that is a stupid argument. It would indeed be nice to have the .NET languages in there as well. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Take it to font page again
- apersaud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why wasn't Perl included?
- disruptor108, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If they keep extending this it could be really awesome
- JRBlack10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sweet! Looking forward to seeing asp, asp.net and javascript!
- kartbart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mysql results only take you to top of the page...
What happens if the documentation pages move? This site will require quite a bit of maintenance, but it is useful. - Bogtha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What's wrong with W3Schools:
http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/doron/archives/2005/05/w3schools.html - basvd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks nice and pretty complete as well. But I don't like how everything's sorted; everything is just alphabetically.
Maybe this works for HTML, but for PHP, CSS and others it might be more useful if it was sorted by category as well (PHP for example: all the array related functions grouped together).
Other than that it's perfect if you need a quick lookup for the parameters of a certain function or the attributes of a certain tag. - looklikecontest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Agreed. JavaScript would be a nice addition.
- revmuthu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I still find http://www.docjar.com/ better
- craigly, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I'd digg it if Ruby were on there. Anyone know of an AJAX-enabled API Reference for Ruby?
- affinity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0great great great thing
They need to add C standard library stuff :P - Bogtha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1How on earth is the Ajax interface "fantastic"? It breaks if you try and open anything in a new tab, because they clearly don't know WTF they are doing with JavaScript. The only use of JavaScript here is as a poor substitute for the target attribute. They could have done the same thing with no JavaScript whatsoever and it would have been less buggy and had the same effect.
*Note to HTML and JavaScript newbies*: if you are writing href="#" or href="javascript:" anywhere, you are almost certainly screwing up. - Yamagami, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Absolutely brilliant! i couldn't care less for Ajax-shmajax but this global api thing is fantastic.
Frames would have been great too, but again - who cares. as long as its there.
well done. - kamaran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They've just added Perl and JavaScript. Maybe read your topic :)
- kellegous, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Or this one:
http://www.indeed.com/jobtrends?q=peanut+butter%2C+jelly - kamaran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here is why its not XML. If you un-digg their J2SE 1.3 help module, youll find 18,000 terms in it. Correspondent XML file would take years to load and process.
- wicketr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Search box is barely useable at the moment. They need to change the algorithm a little bit that generates the results. Say your in the JAVA API and wanted to look up "List". The results are a bunch of references to functions that return lists, but not the actual List class. They need to have some priorities set to look for:
1. The class
2. Any subclasses
3. Any other references - bahaal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Excellent tool
