http://www.ajaxwhois.com/
http://www.digg.com/technology/Very_cool_Whois_website_based_on_Ajax - TAGG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Main issue why this website sucks - whois servers do not allow bulk queries.
So if you will copy this source code and install on your own server - you will blacklisted on whois server pretty fast.
"Maximum Daily connection limit reached. Lookup refused." - jonathandingman, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1this site is dead now...anyone bury it?
- esspee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks :)
- mephitix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2this is the worst implementation of Ajax. Seriously. This is a good example of web developers just using Ajax for the hell of it. You CLICK A BUTTON and it sends an Ajax request to the servlet/server side script, then returns a response back in a div. Wow. You're essentially doing almost the same thing as clicking a button and reloading the page. And for those of you who say "WTF are you saying that's RELOADING A PAGE!!", look at the damn page it's on, and let me know how much it would take to reload a page like that. Worst implementation of Ajax.
- Wang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm not picking on the poster of this article...but honestly, isn't anyone else getting sick of these AJAX posts? lol...yes AJAX is nice and useful for a number of things...and there are zillions of sites/services out there using it...we don't need a digg article for every single one imho! Just my 2 cents...sorry for the rant :) Just getting sick of google/ajax buzzwords being used to get articles to the front page.
- dupy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Why is this just a LITTLE more than useless...?
Well, let me count the ways...
1) It's an example of using AJAX, and despite the 1-trillion other examples out there, it has some educational value. What educational value? It's a good example of how NOT to employ AJAX.
2) It shows that instead of just watching t.v. to get over boredom, one can actually throw some moronic-code together, slap some JS in there, and call it an AJAX implementation.
3) It got dugg. How? Who the hell knows/cares? Point is, somebody found it interesting, and decided that the rest of the world must be let-in on this marvel of technological chaos.
4) This is the best one - it was so lame, so useless, and such a mis-use of the tech, that it actually got me to comment on it. Beat that! - jonathanz1980, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1I found another ajax whois lookup, it parses the whois data and produces xml or json components. seems cool.
http://www.whoisxmlapi.com - ifonly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the zip is corrupt.
- Eraser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is really a pointless use of AJAX.... could be done so much easier and better using traditional POST.
- clouder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Site wouldn't load for me, but Web 2.0? I don't see how (from reading the description) this qualifies as Web 2.0. Correct me if I am wrong I though Web 2.0 was the movement of the web becoming more oriented around visitors contributing content and controlling how a site develops (simply put). Seeing as how AJAX was around when there was "Web 1.0", I fail to see the connection here. Any-hoot, just my 30 second rant. :D
- esspee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ajax whois is a bit more bulky then this one, and it's not open source! :P
- soleblazer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1whats wrong with the whois command line tool?
- barbwire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree that ajaxwhois.com is better - it's beta!
- CaptenSpaulding, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2a much more impressive whois...
http://www.ajaxwhois.com/ - CaptenSpaulding, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0damn frontpage..
beat me to it tagg - esspee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Okay, i re-upped them, they should be okay now, not aure wtf was up. you can get a hold of me at Zymic.com IRC @ irc.zymic.com and esspea [at] gmail [dot] com. I'm avalaible for freelance work.
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whoa.. buzzword ho!
- gkniffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A more innovative use of AJAX in this case would be to make the site more "Google Suggest"-like or that AJAX dictionary -- where you begin typing a domain name and a short list appears...
- ifonly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ok he reuploaded the rars
- ejde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's a good open source alternative to existing proprietary offerings already mentioned, so thanks, esspee. Watch out for excessive use of the word "awesome," though. This is nifty and swell. But awesome? For those who are beating the anti-AJAX drum: you are cooler, yes you are.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The main part of the site doesn't even work... looks like WHOIS didn't like the digg effect.
- compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good job, useful.
- ifonly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nice to see its open source
- wusch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0do you ever need such a thing? Have a php-whois with an echo, you just turn it to an xml file und add one ajax func and thats it. not worth any notice
- rojaro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is actually really lame ... no string checking in whois.php, really basic and simple code which every one who knows a little bit of PHP and javascript could write in less than 5 minutes ...
- homeobocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I guess this kind of training-wheels exercise is a embrionic form of real UI development. Like saying "testing, 1-2-3" into a microphone.
- handeyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah i wish i could download it, id love this for my site
http://techtakeover.com - ifonly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I know this guy, the site is on my server, but he hasn't noticed this is on digg's home page :/ i'll tell him in IRC.
- DJB31st, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0anyone else noticed the title of the page?!
seams a bit fishy that the source is currupt as well :-/ - DJB31st, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://esspea.com/scripts/zshout/
also appears quite cool!
ifonly... any way i can get hold of him to have a chat about this zshout thing? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hey esspee, can you post a version that is NOT corrupt?
thanks - sublim3, on 02/16/2009, -0/+0the site is now is parked to somewhere... I love http://www.dnbots.com for bulk domain whois lookup
- arcterex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nifty enough, but isn't this actually *less* useful because you can't do a lookup.com?host=foo.com with it? Or is that the point of w2 stuff?
/sick of buzzwords - nthitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lame. Don't get me wrong, I love AJAX. But is this helpful? No, I can do just the same with anything else. The given code is nothing revolutionary. Its just a combo of a few things, that don't completely work!!! Try a whois on
www.google.co.uk - ephekt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Jesus, shut up about the Web 2.0 crap already.
- OOTay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Damn Digg effect, Just use whois.sc
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0love it neat and simple
- Toast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0or click here for an open source version:
http://esspea.com/scripts/ajaxwhois/index.php - jabfish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0view the source, looks like some asshat wrote this stuff..
doesn't even do any real string parsing just spitsup echos w/ 'i is lame, i can't parse';exit; :/ - dbsanfte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Enough ajax crap, this is useless.
- v3xt0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I made one of these about uhh... 4 years ago, what's the big deal.
AJAX is nothing new. no digg. - byrons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.diggage.com/ another quicker whois. peace. has a cooler name.
- kanenas.net, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digged... and used already !!!
- unexplainedmilk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ajaxwhois.com looks nicer but at least this guy doesn't make you click an extra radio button just to get the actual whois information you go there for and doesn't have stupid things like
GOOGLE.COM.IS.NOT.HOSTED.BY.ACTIVEDOMAINDNS.NET
when you look up google.com. - brummm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well heres my attemp at a Whois.
My first whois script so feel free to slander me.
Yes it does look like another on out there but i assure you i have created it

- growlands, on 10/16/2007, -0/+0I use this all the time for searching for domains. Prob one of the best things out there for it. Also, domainsbot is pretty good too.
