- JonnyCasino, on 04/16/2009, -0/+14I am very glad to see such a variety of CSS navigation. Often it is assumed that CSS navigation doesn't have enough "zing" or "wow" factor, and it's such a misconception. Using CSS gives accessibility, print friendliness, design flexibility, reduces clutter, smaller file size, and the biggie... serperate content from presentation. Some of these techniques would definitely give flash and javascript a run for their money, at a lot less.
- xythian, on 04/16/2009, -0/+13Ah the dark art of CSS. We can never have enough examples of clean and functional CSS based navigation. Combining multiple techniques from the list could produce some really powerfully web based navigation and interfaces.
- caitlinwoodward, on 04/17/2009, -0/+12CSS-only means no JS.
- domfosnz, on 04/16/2009, -1/+8I like the Simple CSS-based drop-down menu that doesn't use javascript.

Right. - inactive, on 04/17/2009, -0/+3Thats the point they are created by using CSS only (except one or two). Yet they engaging and interactive
- jggube, on 04/16/2009, -0/+3My personal opinion: I would avoid JS on menus unless it degrades gracefully (or PE'ed) because its such an important site feature. Lots of people disable JS by default (script blocking plugins) or because of corporate policies (security being one reason).
- jasonboyee, on 04/17/2009, -0/+3Excellent list of cool CSS techiques. Thanks for the post!
- jasonboyee, on 04/21/2009, -0/+2Web 2.0 is all about user experience, user interaction with the host site, making content accessible and is very important for the maturity of the Internet. Without that, we will be using 1990's brochure like web pages with flashing Giffs.
- jaygeeze, on 04/17/2009, -0/+2Seriously, Joomla? Drupal or WordPress and be done with it.
Joomla yourself == ***** yourself over. - jggube, on 04/17/2009, -0/+2What a good porn site.
- chadsmith729, on 04/17/2009, -0/+2{shutters} thinking about Joomla. I have had too many clients come from broken Joomla sites. So I buried your comment for bringing flashbacks.
- dand8866, on 04/17/2009, -2/+4what was so special about these? Seemed pretty standard for the most part. Guess I missed something
- jaygeeze, on 04/17/2009, -0/+1How big is your site? You have to explain the negatives of flash/Js based navigation in terms of accessibility. Show him screenshots and simulations of what happens when people dont have flash or Js
- Sheethappens, on 04/17/2009, -0/+1I havent used a CSS drop down menu as yet. Every domain owner and his next door neighbour's dog wants "FANCY" menus which you can arrange easily with your preferred menu making program. The problem with doing it this way and not the CSS way is that there is always SOME fool who has a machine that isnt working right and it ALWAYS seems to affect fancy menus. They cant see or use them and thus they cannot navigate around the page. To accomodate for this, you make a simple menu and that isnt what the domain owner wants, just fancy. You explain not everyone will get to use their site and thus never be able to buy through them online but they dont care so you just put the "fancy" menus in and leave it at that. 2 weeks later, YOU are the reason that it is all wrong and YOU are the one who will have to fix it. You prove that on a normal machine with no problems the web site works fine but as it so happens, the person who cant get through the site is one of their friends or buyers they want to keep happy etc.
So, for the near future, it's CSS menus for me because script menus just mean more work in the long run. - arvaris, on 04/17/2009, -3/+3Most of these menus look like ballsack. The accordian one was particularly sacktastic.
I'm all about css menus...but anyone that finds this stuff interesting can make menus like these in their sleep. I didn't see any that made me go "Wow. Now that's some cool *****." - crocodilu2008, on 05/01/2009, -0/+0A "must to see " http://digg.com/programming/1600_CSS_TUTORIALS
- jkash23686, on 04/23/2009, -1/+1hardly "web 2.0" is just a ***** buzzword people who dont really know what they are doing like to throw around.
- Sheethappens, on 04/17/2009, -0/+0Not just "site" but "sites" for different businesses. None of them are large and none of them NEED Js menus (the fanciest thing I want to do for them other than CSS layouts are flash rollovers but even then it is a worry with someone's machine not working well).
I have explained on and on how people wont be able to buy off them, wont be able to navigate around their site and so on but they still want it because they have seen similar elsewhere so it is a case of do it or they find someone else to do it. So I do it and the end result is as I predicted would happen. SOMEONE has a lack lustre machine that needs its windows fixed, Js fixed or whatever to get around on this site but because that ONE person (or group of a few people) cannot get around the site with THEIR machines, then the site designer, me, MUST be the reason for the problem.
I am tempted, no kidding, to make my laptop work as badly as those machines and show them what CAN happen, next time someone new wants those sorts of menus.
Oh and let us not forget the ever present EXCEL spreadsheet that the people want embedded in their web site for whatever reason. Of COURSE that cant be seen by some people but they want it there anyway. At least that is easy to get around by making a text file with the contents and a link saying "If you cannot properly see the table below, please click on this to download the text".
I dont know what it is but I cannot seem to get across to people that their lovely looking menus are magnets for trouble! K.I.S.S. is MUCH better. Oh well, in future I WILL be saying "CSS menus or YOU go somewhere else". Why? I need the income but is the income generated from a static site with Js menus where the site is, say, only about 2 dozen pages also static, no database involved, worth the income when you have to spend endless hours explaining to someone who doesnt understand that the problem their favourite customer is complaining about is one of that customer's machine? I have even shown them web site stats showing they have hundreds of hits in the first few days (new domain) and if only 6 people have complained, surely if the site was wrong they would not get only THAT many. Nope, doesnt make sense to them.
Oh well, decision made anyway. No more Js menus, just CSS ones and if they dont like it they really CAN find someone else. - FarrahFawcett, on 04/17/2009, -1/+0I saw this long time before, and used it in my blog too. Great compilation!
- dolica, on 04/17/2009, -1/+0Great selection. First one is my favorite!!
- cantyra, on 04/17/2009, -3/+1Some nice examples but I wouldn't say all 30 were exceptional
- inactive, on 04/17/2009, -8/+2Psh, Joomla yourself and be done with it...
- jkash23686, on 04/17/2009, -7/+1tabs are exceptional? pfffffff im so sick of the ***** "web 2.0" give me a ***** break.
