- monolith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OK, stop with the giving out of the secrets. Job security and all that.
- monolith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, thousands of people get together to post info on the net (tech info) and there is schism and differences of opinion... color me not surprised. Digg is awesome.
- monolith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Iccanui, me too. Better sql out in the world would make my life easier.
- digit9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Though this may not be considered tech news, it is tech relevant, so why bitch. If your looking for tech news go to google news or yahoo news.
Good digg. - ciphex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sometimes useful information that I might not otherwise look up is pushed onto my plate via digg. Like this doc. This is exactly the kind of thing I look for when I check digg.
Good job. - dshaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice! ...and remember:
"Use indexes on the tables craefully." - Iccanui, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ok 2 questions.
How is this not tech related?
and
If digg is supposed to be " tech only" why is there other categories?
I think this is a great link. Dug. - kaemaril, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This article was last modified 25/01/99 23:59:59, according to Firefox (and, judging from the HTML, I can believe it). Too old to be relevant, imho.
The article says "These hints--many of them previously unpublished--can help you avoid the plague of poorly written SQL statements". Even for 1999, I kind of have my doubts about the unpublished bit. Hell, I'd quibble with the "hints" bit -- 99% of that article is obvious to anyone who's even been in the same building as a DBA training course :) - exobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg isn't about 'tech news' even if that's what the About section says, it's more a place for interesting tech-related (not necessarily though) links, and yes, /. del.icio.us and digg do sometimes share links.
- masterzora, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The difference is that your pecker doesn't have an About page that says "for pissing out of."
The social bookmarking is the implemenation of how to share the tech news, not an indicator of the content. - dick-richardson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Social bookmarking would appear to indicate to me that an internet site (be it 'news' or otherwise) already exists and is being bookmarked socially. Call me crazy.
Digg's only for tech news...and my pecker is only for pissing out of. Masterzora, I think you're looking for a different site. Perhaps http://news.google.com/?ned=us&topic=t, http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=index&cid=738, or http://www.geek.com/ would be more to your liking. - dick-richardson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And forgive me, my apostrophes were incorporated with the links. Remove them and all will be well.
- thicke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool post, totally dugg....
Now to go a little off topic like the majority of the comments on this post...
From the about page:
"Digg is a technology news website that combines social bookmarking, blogging, RSS, and non-hierarchical editorial control. With digg, users submit stories for review, but rather than allow an editor to decide which stories go on the homepage, the users do."
I think the thing that make Digg so cool is the "but rather than allow an editor to decide which stories go on the homepage, the users do" part. If you don't like it, don't digg it. If you do then digg away. Why is that so hard to understand? - kaemaril, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This article is totally out of date. It makes no mention of Oracle 9 or 10, suggests that the cost-based optimizer is still a tad experimental, you name it. The "hints" are, predominantly, common sense. There's certainly nothing in there that I didn't know a couple of weeks after cross-training to Oracle. A "25 SQL Commandments" article WOULD be cool, and I'd "digg" it in a New Yourk minute if only it was - y'know - up to date. Which this one isn't, alas.
- masterzora, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@iccanui:
I never said it wasn't tech relevant. It's 100% tech relevant. I said it wasn't /news/.
and
All of the categories are tech relevant. I don't know why people think otherwise.
@digit9:
Would you be okay with this being on Google News? Because Digg is a self-proclaimed tech news site, just like the tech section of Google News. The rules are the same, just the editors are different.
@exobot:
How can you say it's not just tech news? Because people ignore the About page? That makes no sense. The About page and front page both say "technology news website" because it is a technology news website. If people ignore that bit it doesn't make it any less so, it just means the people are idiots and/or can't do as told.
@thicke:
I understand that perfectly, except that it's wrong. If you don't like it, don't digg it. Understood. If you like it, digg it. Understood. What you don't mention is "if it's not tech news report it", which i did. I just mention in the comments so as to guide other people to do it. It's no different than the people who say "Cool link. +digg"
Just because the site allows users to decide what should go on the homepage doesn't mean that the users should decide that they don't like the purpose of the site and change it. Stick to the purpose. If you want the site to be something different, make your own site and let it have whatever purpose you want. But the purpose of Digg is still to be a "technology news website that combines social bookmarking, blogging, RSS, and non-heirarchical editorial control." - masterzora, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0ciphex: That's nice and all, but it's still not the purpose of Digg. You can find that sort of info at del.icio.us (which is where this was found, if I'm not mistaken). Digg is for *tech news*.
- jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I've noticed that about 50% of links on the Digg frontpage come directly from del.icio.us's popular page.
- ForumTroll, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0What is with all the Digg stories posting links to basic programming tutorials? Do you guys not know how to use Google when you need to find something? Do you need the links to all have appeared on Digg six times before you finally get it?
