- nphp20, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7There is another front paged article with the exact same name....
http://digg.com/tech_news/10_Programming_Languages_You_Should_Learn_Right_Now
@badasscheese above me:
Yep. - Tiger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I don't think they are in any particular order.
they're not from 1st to 10th.
they're just the 10 languages you should know according to the article. - BadassCheese, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I really want the same story like three away from each other.
- LucasVB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Please people, mark this as a dupe. The other digg mentioned above links to the exact same article, and it was submitted before. There's no point on having two front page diggs to the same thing.
Besides, there's a "mark as duplicate" function for a reason... - itchybeard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can't justify why YOU need to learn Perl, personally I've got no use for it either and I did know Perl once, albeit not to a great level of depth. I can give a good reason for ANY programmer to learn Perl though, the same reason mechanics know how to service carburettors even though fuel injection exists....

10 print "Hello world"
20 goto 10
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh - BadassCheese, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Thats why I said it :b
- BadassCheese, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3*Waits for massive wave of dupe patrolers*
- tgone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0...and Google. Perl isn't going to die anytime soon.
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7Nice to have a fresh, new topic appear on the front page
- hoggardb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe you would want to learn Perl because companies like Amazon use it?
- mntalkase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Perl? Are you kidding me? Can anyone justify to me why I NEED to learn perl these days?
- MoneyShot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Javascript *and* AJAX made the list... groan.
"The demand for AJAX knowledge is huge because it's so damned hard to learn,"
Ummm, sure it is. Granted, I've been a web developer for quite some time, but it only took me an afternoon to start doing useful stuff with AJAX once I dove into it. Hell, using Prototype and an effects library like Moo eliminates 80% of the hard stuff (mainly having to do with cross-browser headaches). - MoneyShot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"High-speed scripting with caching, augmented with compiled code plug-ins (such as can be done with Perl and PHP) is where the future is. Building Web apps from scratch using C or COBOL is going the way of the dinosaur," said Duquaine.
"Learning C#, which is just Java with a different name plate, is critical if you heavily use Microsoft," said Duquaine.
Where did they get this "expert"? WTF writes web apps in COBOL nowadays (or *ever* for that matter)? And do people really sit around and ask themselves "Hmmm... should I write this application in C or PHP? I just don't know because their just so damn similar!" I'm not even going to bother spanking him for the C#/Java/MS comment. - chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3"Jobs available" as queried through Dice
This article was written as (and/or by) Dice as an advertisement (three Dice adverts on the linked article).

Deb like$ Dice. - MrDiaz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4I am seeing PHP coming up on first place in quite some places now. I wonder why? The way I see it, you cannot rank programming languages that have nothing in common. I wouldn't call either PHP a programming language, is more likely a scripting language. Anyway, that causes confusion to some people.
As going back to why is PHP in the first place, I don't get it. Why? There are far more people programming for .NET plataforms than web right now. So why do we have PHP coming up in first place? That's just wrong. Is better for everybody to learn languages that are more used on jobs on a daily basis.
According to these links,
1 - http://www.dedasys.com/articles/language_popularity.html
2 - http://www.tiobe.com/tpci.htm
Languages based on plataforms are more popular than scripting languages. So here is my question again. Why is PHP in the first place? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2@MrDiaz -- My guess is because learning PHP allows you to get into the whole Web 2.0 arena which is uber hyped at the moment and also allows people to be more dependent in terms of a start up company. It's harder to go and write premium C++ applications and make money off of it (unless you're working for a company) than to write your own AJAX web 2.0 service.
- jwxa, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Dugg b/c it at least provides noobs a brief explanation of the languages listed.
- HalBSure, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0I don't see ARexx on the list. For shame.
- chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Because Dice says so.
