- inactive, on 03/27/2008, -47/+406Thank you Bill Clinton!
- impei, on 03/27/2008, -26/+335Democrats tax and spend. Republicans just spend.
- MisterNoMoniker, on 03/27/2008, -43/+295I don't even think economic policies have anything to do with it. This graph could just as accurately be titled "Military spending by president".
Reagan ***** us by dumping money into the cold war arms race, and Bush is ***** us by flushing money down the toilet in Iraq. Any domestic spending is a pittance by comparison. - Fatcheeseguy, on 03/27/2008, -15/+217I wonder what % of the American population knows how much debt the U.S. is in?
- DeepFriedFetus, on 03/27/2008, -64/+240Well, lets not forget that during Bill Clinton's time in office, there was a Republican majority in Congress, and the Congress basically controls the budget. But, don't get me wrong, I think the Republicans have strayed way too far from the original base (blame the neocons - liberals in disguise! /transformers theme song). But the Democrats shouldn't be considered the low spenders - after all, part of being a Democrat is being a fiscal liberal. Real Republicans (see Ron Paul) are true fiscal conservatives. When we see the Bushes raising the debt and think "Wow, the republicans are the big spenders, not the Democrats", we have to remember that today's typical "Republican" is really just a liberal pretending to be a "Neoconservative" (a.k.a former Trotskyite).
- Issius, on 03/27/2008, -4/+90A better question would be what % of the American population cares.
- rgremill, on 03/27/2008, -4/+82What does this graph look like when National Debt is compared to Control of Congress?
- UGM2099, on 03/27/2008, -3/+78What the hell do you think he's going to do, subvert her campaign?
- UGM2099, on 03/27/2008, -4/+57No one wants to see Sand used as a typeface choice!
- FutureGuy, on 03/27/2008, -8/+60Just don't ask me to support his Mrs.
And about the graph, well why do you thing republicans call themselves "conservative", few more years of "conservative" rule and it will be the point of no return for US. - jynweythek, on 09/17/2008, -6/+56The chart is a bit misleading as it only shows presidential terms, not legislative terms where most spending takes place. that said, the Bush administration is indeed responsible for the excessive spending of recent years (tax cuts, war spending)
- smotpoker, on 03/27/2008, -28/+75Wow. You're my new hero, nobody
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 03/27/2008, -6/+52It's a good thing that you're not in the United States government because you don't seem to understand fundamental precepts of economics.
- PhildoVT, on 03/27/2008, -15/+57Republicans dont "just spend"....the current administration just spends. there is a difference by the way. The Bush administration is the worst excuse for a republican presidency ever.
- bitcloud, on 03/27/2008, -3/+44Vote for Nobody!
Nobody for President!
Nobody will listen to your needs
Nobody will fulfill your promises...
Nobody CARES! - DeviateSeptum, on 03/27/2008, -19/+58Yet Republicans still pretend like they are the party of fiscal conservatism. Hypocrites. I've been using this disparity of democratic vs republican spending in my discussions since the mid 90's and still to this day Republicans act as though I'm making it up. Nobody seems to research the facts or pay attention to the numbers when forming their political opinions. The party of fiscal conservatism, which is a noble concept, ceased to exist a long time ago. The Republican party has become essentially a religious fundamentalism party --- make no mistake about it.
- soulkitchen, on 03/27/2008, -9/+48Does anyone find it alarming that the graph covers "Increases". Call me old fashioned but shouldn't it at some point flip across the x-axis as we pay off our debt?
- gowolverines, on 03/27/2008, -2/+37If they announced it on American Idol and Ryan Seacrest said we should care, then by golly, we would care.
- phybere, on 03/27/2008, -5/+40The old days of republican fiscal responsibility are long gone
- mrshickadance9, on 03/27/2008, -18/+50It doesnt help when you put billions of dollars into that sinkhole otherwise known as the Iraq war.
- cheezy321, on 03/27/2008, -7/+40Look into it a little deeper. First off, there was no war (I dont agree with the one Bush got us into), and he pretty much was president right up until the bust of the dot com boom. There was a LOT of money coming into the US, so therefore the government was flush with cash
- TexMexMatt, on 03/27/2008, -3/+35The rest of the world like USA back then because you acted like friends and not like bullies. Nobody likes a bully but everyone loves their friend. USA wasn't a whore back then but today you are Saudi Arabia's and Israel's whore bitch.
- G00SEISL00SE, on 03/27/2008, -9/+40Regan did it to make the soviets match us for the cold war which help lead to there collapse. After they collapse he started cutting back on the spending. The money was then put back into the country to help us get out of the bad economic market we were in. Bush gives military contracts to non Americans. So Reaganomics is like filling the bucket full of water that's got shotgun holes in it now. Not really a republican and wasn't a fan of the cowboy way Reagan was but it wasn't all bad.
- jmpeagle, on 03/27/2008, -4/+31uh...fiscal policy effects are felt within 6 months....only monetary policy takes a couple of years and the government has no control over this.
what you should have stated was that it is the House of Representatives that controls out budget and they were in democratic hands for 40 years up until 1994 when the GOP took over. - Lane, on 03/27/2008, -1/+28the national debt is incomprehensible; it may as well be a bagillion dollars
- microcosm13, on 03/27/2008, -16/+42This graph also leaves out the fact that most Republican presidents also had Democratic Congresses that were creating the budgets. It really isn't accurate on a myriad of levels as it neglects that, GDP, legislative terms etc. Buried as Inaccurate.
- inactive, on 03/27/2008, -1/+27Good for you, I just did myself, and I saw your post as well. ***** you.
- skinrock, on 03/27/2008, -37/+62I'll admit, I had no idea Bill Clinton did THAT good of a job.
- exomni, on 03/27/2008, -22/+47Republicans pretty much suck. Not to say Democrats don't suck as well, but the suckery of the Republican party has become absolutely mammoth and incomprehensibly enormous in size.
- davestar, on 03/27/2008, -4/+28i'm going to assume that your post is dripping with sarcasm and is thus hilarious
- Ajajadude, on 03/27/2008, -2/+26That would actually make him a perfect candidate to be a member of the government.
- XristosAnesti, on 03/27/2008, -3/+27You dumped her on the spot, right? Please?
- Zephkiel, on 03/27/2008, -4/+27I've always thought it was the fact that the Republicans aren't really all that fiscally conservative, and they try to keep up that facade with the voters by taxing less. Since they don't lower the amount of spending they do, they increase the amount of borrowing they do.
- pintomp3, on 03/27/2008, -3/+25tax and spend vs borrow and spend.
- inactive, on 03/27/2008, -2/+23You guys loved him in 2004. What happened?
- gwolf, on 03/27/2008, -3/+24The only part of our economy that got strengthened was Halliburton's bank balance, tax free.
- electricdragon, on 03/27/2008, -4/+25We will never pay off the debt.
- deadowl, on 03/27/2008, -6/+26But by titling it as "Military spending by president," you'd be ignoring that just about every other government program is underfunded.
- inactive, on 03/27/2008, -25/+45How many Enron employees are in jail for using the same accounting tricks?
- exomni, on 03/27/2008, -6/+25Actually, republicans have done a lot about abortion. Abortions rapidly increase when republicans take office. Abortion had been on an 8 year decline while Clinton was in office, people were getting educated about sex, being responsible, then Bush takes the white house with his "abstinence only" and "no sperm left behind" programs, and teen pregnancies and abortions have been skyrocketing ever since.
- Jenadae, on 03/27/2008, -2/+20Sad story there! Me and my g/f were standing online at wal-mart ready to check out when she notices a sign on one of the TVs saying "Wal-mart saved you over $20,000,000 this year!" and she goes to say "Wow Wal-mart saved us more then our deficit is".... sad thing shes one of the smartest people I know so i cant imagine what most of the population thinks...
- BigW, on 03/27/2008, -2/+20You are correct. This chart would show an entirely different story if it charted control of congress vs. deficits.
But I do agree with the message the merging of what that chart merged with this one would say. Democrat presidents with Republican congresses spend less money. - gwolf, on 03/27/2008, -8/+26Do you not believe what your own eyes tell you, LOOK AT THE GRAPH. Even a tool like you can process this.
- mrshickadance9, on 03/27/2008, -1/+19Well if you've seen it then why don't you show it to your friends and family who HAVEN'T seen it??
- PhildoVT, on 03/27/2008, -17/+35it's not as simple as that. there is only one significant democratic president on that chart (clinton.... the data from carter doesnt really show anything). There were other factors during many of these periods that contributed to federal spending (stock market crash of 1987, dot-com boom/bust, etc.)
more importantly, i think whoever made this graph may have been just a *little* biased (look at the "gee maw..." comment). Stop being a sensationalist douchebag. - nickerbocker, on 03/27/2008, -1/+18Hmmm I would expect the US Treasury site would be a .gov not this lexta.com
- GettinReal, on 03/27/2008, -10/+27democrat + republican = big ***** sandwich in your mouth
- rahamm, on 03/27/2008, -3/+20VS. Bush having a Republican Congress and an increase in spending and decrease taxes spending the US into the ground? There goes you stuipd theory out the window of president and congress not working on increasing and decreasing the debt together.
- wishninja, on 03/27/2008, -21/+38Should have voted for Ron Paul and helped us kick out the neocons.
