- SheilaNoya, on 09/25/2008, -21/+406OK guys... as a grandmother, I'm usually let down by the low voter turnout among our younger folks. You can change that this year because you finally have someone worth fighting for. In all of my 58 years, I've never seen anyone as promising as Obama. He's the right man at the right time.
No excuses this year. Don't just go to the polls by yourself either - Drag a group of friends with you.
The Evangelicals have been very good at organizing large groups to go to the polls. Do you REALLY want to let them pick your next president again? I don't!!!!!!
Organize. Make sure you're registered, and VOTE. The whole world is counting on you.
This is YOUR future (and MY future too). Don't screw it up. Make me proud! - cheesegypsy, on 09/25/2008, -4/+161While not surprising, it's interesting to see how many more young people are registering as compared with past elections. Already Rock the Vote has 1.6 million voter-registration form downloads vs. 1 million total in the 2004 election. So with a couple weeks left we are looking at a huge increase, most of which are in the Obama camp. When you look at how many votes Bush won by in 2004, it won't take many of those kids to change the electoral map. Florida and Ohio have a lot of colleges.
- sevvo, on 09/25/2008, -1/+155Dugg for being a Digg-surfing grandmother.
- cheesegypsy, on 09/25/2008, -8/+147Young people probably like the fact that Obama actually knows how to use a computer.
- hiriumi, on 09/25/2008, -12/+112I'm not so young, but I'm for Obama.
- neognostic, on 09/25/2008, -5/+88She didn't say anything hateful, and judging by your many comments, you are the epitome of hate.
Buried and reported. - Lula87, on 09/25/2008, -5/+73It's no surprise that Obama is appealing to the younger masses: we are the ones who will be living with the decisions that will take place in the coming election. Obama and Biden have the experience that is needed, while McCain is out of touch with the needs of the younger population and his second in command couldn't even run a car wash business.
- whit4brains, on 09/25/2008, -12/+70Hopefully they will come out and vote. If McCain gets elected it can only be a matter of time before the draft is reinstated and this is the group that he is going to send to "bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdJUCU1UH2w - sbader, on 09/25/2008, -1/+57Young voters please make sure you bring what you need to vote.
For example in Arizona if you're driver's license address does not match the address you are registered to you need two additional forms to verify your address such as your voter registration card and an electric bill.
Every year I see several college kids get turned away from the poll because they don't bring a second form like an electric bill. - shadekeiko, on 09/25/2008, -11/+58I'm a young voter, and while I always intended to register to vote pre-Obama, it was Ron Paul that got me passionate about this year's election. I'm going to be voting 3rd party, but I'm really glad that so many young voters are being inspired by Obama. Better Obama than nobody/McCain, right?
It'll be interesting to see the turnout stats once those come out... - quick2k2ecotec, on 09/25/2008, -5/+43Young Ohioan myself... voting for Obama! :)
- charm803, on 09/25/2008, -1/+36Grandfathers in politics are ruining my future.
Change with the times, grandpa! - zephyear, on 09/25/2008, -2/+36how is going to iraq defending this country?
iraq never posed a threat to us and still doesn't. - pablo0713, on 09/25/2008, -10/+42The 13% undecided are the idiots of our youth. 29% voting for McCain probably never had to worry or work a day in their lives. These are the arm chair generals you'll find on message boards across the web. Calling for war from the comfort of mommie and daddies McMansion because they think war is cool when they play CoD 4.
- mcmullet, on 09/25/2008, -9/+39Unfortunately not true in my city. I see high school kids everywhere with "NoBama" written on their vehicles. Young and stupid.
- Kenzan, on 09/25/2008, -0/+28And why?
Well, I love my great grandpa and everything, it's just that I would not trust him to take care of the cat, much less the country. - Hetman, on 09/25/2008, -1/+28Sweet lets invade North Korea, Almost all of africa, Iran, "actually almost everyone in the middle east, China, Most of Russia, Columbia. Did I leave anyone out who opresses their people? Anyways what Navy was Iraq planning on using to invade the U.S.?
- SammyJr, on 09/25/2008, -1/+28It balances out all the fundies and fogies who vote McCain but don't know why.
- blackdaisies, on 09/25/2008, -4/+31Please young americans, don't be lazy and stay home on election day. GET OUT THERE AND VOTE.
- Brought to you by some random liberal Canadian. - Recluse84, on 09/25/2008, -3/+2924 here and this'll be the first election im voting in. Even registered before Paris Hilton and P Diddy started telling me to on pain of death if I dont on MTV.
GObama - SuckMyDigg, on 09/25/2008, -7/+32I'm somewhat young... 25.. and I'm not so sure Obama is what the country needs, but he's a hundred times more attractive as a practical option than McCain. Unfortunately for all the Obama grassroots people all over campus that like to harass me at least 5 times a day to vote for Obama, I feel I should vote on principle, not because I was handed the choice "evil piece of *****" and "lesser piece of *****."
- pinchduck, on 09/25/2008, -3/+28We hear this every election cycle. The question is: Will they actually vote? The teeny-boppers could have won the election for Kerry, but they stayed home to bitch about Bush. I've heard this so often that I'm not counting them. We'll find out if I am wrong on election day. It would be great to have a new generation of politically minded people entering the world out of college.
- centerblack, on 09/25/2008, -1/+24Hello Alex, this is your father. You're 19 now. Your mother and I want you to know.... you don't have to vote Republican just because that's how we vote!
Now go clean your room.
Because I said so. - neognostic, on 09/25/2008, -1/+24@aadyss - It is the Republicans who voted for this deregulation and now it is the Republican administration calling for the bailout. Time for your meds.
- eastwood24, on 09/25/2008, -2/+25don't put words in her mouth. it's not an oxymoron at all, but nice try.
- inactive, on 09/25/2008, -0/+22from the South?
- deddoc, on 09/25/2008, -2/+24in the words of south park: you always have to choose between a douche and a turd sandwich
- nevergleam, on 09/25/2008, -3/+25I'm surprised Ron Paul wasn't mentioned in the article. Hardly any site on the internet goes 10 minutes without a rational, irrational, or completely insane 18-29 year-old posting a Ron Paul plug.
- EustaceTilley, on 09/25/2008, -10/+32I am young, and to be honest it bothers me to hear people say "i dont know the politics, but i am voting for Obama." i understand that people want him to win on this website, and that they may not agree with this statement, but i would prefer to have an informed electorate rather than a bunch of kids that dont know what is really up in the world.
I go to a good university (if i say so myself) but i have heard that exact phrase "i dont know the politics..." several times before. i agree that democracy intends for all voters to be heard, but the nation will not head in a good direction if people are not looking into who they are supporting more than just if he/she is who they think they should support. - IphtashuFitz, on 09/25/2008, -5/+26If you'd rather see Obama win instead of McCain then why are you voting for a third party? Every vote counts, and another vote for Obama is another step in getting him to the White House.
- dpinkston, on 09/25/2008, -0/+21Love you Grandma!
- paigeinphilly, on 09/25/2008, -2/+23SPREAD THE WORD
please remember NO obama (or any candidate for that matter) paro..no buttons..shirts..anything..its against the law..and the officials can block you from voting..many are counting on this tactic working..thinking folks wont want to come home...change and come back..
its a law...watch it really get enforced this election..watch.
Obama/Biden 08
"I can see russia from my house...." classic. - drmangrum, on 09/25/2008, -0/+21I think year we'll see a record number of 18-30 year old. Too many are pissed at watching the baby boomer generation destroy their futures. Unlike previous generations, there's no avoiding election news. Most of that age group is on the internet, if they hit a major website, they're gonna see it.
- momo203, on 09/25/2008, -4/+23Your an idiot. Nothing is free but some things are worth paying extra taxes for like universal healthcare. Good luck with your support of McCain.. sheep.
- Braintricks, on 09/25/2008, -1/+20@oldhick
Digg wouldn't exist if that was an option. - sodade, on 09/25/2008, -0/+18Evangelicals have taught the young to hate evangelicals.
- Chimpdecheese, on 09/25/2008, -2/+20Amen sistah! If the people to whom this country will belong, actually exercise their right to vote, there is finally some hope for the US.
- mcgaff23, on 09/25/2008, -2/+20Let's be a bit realistic here. This is probably one of the more important elections this country has seen in quite some time. We are involved in an endless war, our economy is in the toilet, our foreign relations are a joke, the world despises us, our domestic situation - from housing to education is pathetic, and we are just in dire need of new blood to lead us. I used to be a McCain supporter until this campaign. He has run a sleazy, lie-ridden, flip-flopping, desperate campaign that has devolved into a farce. I admired and was very proud of McCain due to his military background because I am an ex-Marine, but his votes regarding veteran support is just a slap in the face to every American who has ever served and/or sacrificed their lives for our country. And on top of all this he chose Palin as his running mate. Yes, she's attractive and charasmatic - but look at his true reasons for choosing her: she will bring in votes simply because she is younger, attractive, and a woman. Those are her only qualifications. She does not have the experience needed to be a heartbeat (or heart attack) away from the presidency. For crying out loud, Dan Quayle is generally regarded as a joke of a Vice President and he was far more qualified than Palin - who, BTW, is as backwards in her politics as she is in her beliefs. Oh, and for the record, I am a registered Republican and a devout Catholic.
True, Obama is not perfect - he has lied and exaggerated, he has flip-flopped, he has made poor decisions - I'm sure the list goes on and on - but in the end he has tried to remain honorable, he has tried to run a campaign that focuses on the ISSUES rather than running his campaign like a popularity contest in a high school student council race. In the end, he has done what he has needed to do to be semi-successful in American politics - and this does not excuse his missteps but rather condemns our political system because no one can be succesful unless they are supremely corrupt.
This country needs change and I'm not kidding myself by thinking that if Obama wins then change will happen overnight. Hell, we'd be lucky for any change in the next 10 years. No single President, no single person, can effect the change this country needs, but he could be the catalyst. I don't think we, as a country, could get worse under Obama, but we'd definitely be much worse off under McCain. We obviously have not done well under Little Bush and electing McCain (especially since I can now see the truly and extremely corrupted man for who he is) would only be an extension of the present Administration.
Do yourselves and this country a favor though. Do not vote third party this year. I did last time (I hate Bush, did I mention that?) and I know it was a wasted vote. This election may be a close one, and though you'd be voting for the lesser of two evils, at least your vote will count and hopefully keep the greater of two evils out of office.
We need a leader and Obama is that leader. - copa31, on 09/25/2008, -0/+17In 2004 the democratic turnout amongst this age group was 54% of the total 18-30 year-olds.
Whereas I feel it will be another close election, there's a reason why law makers don't pander to us... We don't get off our butts to vote. Registering is nice and all, but actually going to the polling stations is why year after year after year youth voter turnout sucks. - EvolvingOne, on 09/25/2008, -1/+18Thankfully, the majority of high school kids can't vote, which in my opinion is a good thing, because the majority (granted, not all) of high-schoolers are for the most part ignorant to the rest of the world. College is really the first time many kids get exposed to a bunch of new ideas, and begin thinking outside of just themselves.
- ispellkonfusion, on 09/25/2008, -1/+17Not only am I a young Ohioan voting for Obama, I managed to debate my Bush-voting father into submission. He's voting Obama too. :)
- oldhick, on 09/25/2008, -1/+16@aadyss, explain the "more taxes" to me. How is Obama selling the "Socialist excrement" and the Republican's aren't. I'm being serious here.
George Bush passed the Prescription Drug crap for Medcare/Medicaid. That's socialist.
George Bush is bailing out the banking industry, that's socialist.
George Bush is all about "No Child Left Behind" (federal funding of local education), that's socialist.
John McCain's website on health care says he wants to "establish a nonprofit corporation that would contract with insurers to cover patients who have been denied insurance and could join with other state plans to enlarge pools and lower overhead costs." That's socialist.
Seriously, I want to understand your view. - invalidnot4long, on 09/25/2008, -2/+17Think, McCain suspended his campagin, Obama's already won.
- legoalert33, on 09/25/2008, -1/+16I got the feeling that you're a jackass.
- Antitheft, on 09/25/2008, -1/+15And it's "lesson" you ***** retarded ape. Learn how to spell correctly before bashing someone for trying to promote positive change.
- SSPink, on 09/25/2008, -1/+15This is a big part of why the polls are meaningless. Many of the polls don't count young people; polls generally ignore first time voters and most people under thirty simply don't have a grandpa phone (land-line), and pollsters don't generally call cellular phones. Polls that use a 'likely voter' model are especially flawed, 'likely voters' are usually people who have voted in the last two presidential elections, so no one under 26 can possibly count, and the vast majority of voting age people under 30 haven't voted in the last two elections. The polls aren't representative of the electorate this election cycle, the polls are basically polls of middle age and older voters.
Both campaigns know the truth, of course, which is why even as the polls said it was close McCain's camp has always been in kitchen sink desperation mode, this race hasn't been close at any point. If the votes are actually counted as cast this time many people are going to be shocked at how wide the margin actually is. - wunksta, on 09/25/2008, -0/+13most young people? try most PEOPLE
but welcome to representative democracy, beats the alternative - rednip, on 09/25/2008, -0/+12If you really do think that Obama is a socialist, it's likely wouldn't pass high school social studies. I doubt if you really do, I think that it's just your talking point.
It's funny that you are critical of her 'negativity' as that's all you are about, really it's what defines a Republican campaign.
- turpenine, on 09/25/2008, -2/+14ohioan voting for obama (+1)
i go to UD. - ryanonfire, on 09/26/2008, -0/+12But McCain invented the blackberry!!!
