- inactive, on 10/17/2007, -8/+33The information I get from the people who are in country seems to indicate that they are indeed putting the maniacs on the run.
Now, it isn't because of some grand diplomatic effort,it is because of the crappy way the manics treat people.
most of the al-qaeda are from Saudi Arabia and from what I have been told they are racists.
They don't believe the Iraqis are on the same level as them so they run roughshod over them, force their women into marrying them, kill families if someone speaks out and they are generally the biggest jackasses in the desert.
This has led to resistance from the Iraqis and that led to more bloodshed and that led the tribal elders to turn to the government and our troops for help.
As it turns out having al qaeda in your neighborhood was far worse than having Americans.
I have read dozens of accounts of the destruction and murder from al qaeda and also seen many pictures of what they did to Iraqis.
So you can scoff at the notion that these maniacs are on the run but the fact is they should have treated their hosts the Iraqis a bit better.
We are doing a better job of killing al qaeda because the Iraqis are giving us good intel and the Iraqi military is getting stronger.
Whether that pattern continues or not I have no way of knowing.
What I do know is that the children of Iraq who are around American troops like them and the feeling is mutual.
I have been sent dozens of pictures of our troops with Iraqi children all smiles.
This does not mean I agree with "W", I don't.
This does not mean that I agree with the mission they were sent on, I don't.
This just means I have read several stories from people who are there that indicate al qaeda is on the run and their operations have been disrupted and our troops are doing a good job over there and are not hated like the media says every day.
We are also seeing decay in their operations in Afghanistan.
You may remember we were bombing the crap out of tora bora again?
Seems the reason we found al qaeda there is because the taliban in Pakistan kicked them out.
There is a huge rift and it has to do in part with our ability to strike them and their lack of ability to win one firefight.
I hope that we can bring all of our troops home before the election because I hate reading and hearing about our troops dying.
So young, so many deaths.
Most of the deaths are of people who were younger than my daughter.
I can't imagine the pain of being told your loved one is a casualty of an action not worth a war declaration to those who purport to represent us in DC. - zeitgueist, on 10/17/2007, -2/+20That's for the most part true. I wouldn't consider whats going on now major combat. Dangerous and *****, yes, but we're not fighting an actual army.
- doctorfungi, on 10/18/2007, -1/+181.5 Million?! That's nearly 1,000 people dead EVERY day without the mainstream OR Independent media hearing about it. What the hell are you smoking?
- doctorfungi, on 10/16/2007, -1/+16The "major combat operations" quote was in reference to the conventional military operation, which did, in fact, end in 2003 after the Iraqi army was flattened.
- valkyries, on 10/17/2007, -2/+15let digg think what they want, they wont ever believe the truth or even begin to understand it.
- NonLeftistDiggr, on 10/17/2007, -5/+18Burried for not following the moveon.org agenda.
- masterm1nd, on 10/16/2007, -5/+15How many times have we heard both stories. It's either we are winning or it is impossible for us to win.
- noremorse1, on 10/16/2007, -1/+9First off, this comment is coming from a US Soldier. A US born, college educated Soldier who is fluent in Arabic. In fact, my job is on the ground as an interpreter. I was educated by a former Soldier of the Iraqi Army. I know way more about this than you could pretend to know. I could go on, but it would compromise my clearance. And now... for my comment.
You are a blubbering idiot. - deity, on 10/17/2007, -0/+7empirefalling, your handle gives away your agenda or perhaps your wish.
- bamapachyderm, on 10/16/2007, -0/+7Un-friend him. He's one of those ***** shout-spamming lowlifes that adds everyone on digg to their "friends" list in hopes that they'll reciprocate (so he can spam you). Sad that one of his submissions got this many diggs, because probably half of the diggs are from his shout victims.
- xJudahx, on 10/17/2007, -1/+7When the NY Times and Washington Post start saying things about progress, perhaps we should listen just a little bit.
I'm skeptical about everything after all the bs we've gone through, but I try to be careful about not being too close minded. - NonLeftistDiggr, on 10/17/2007, -5/+11Spread thin yes, weak?... you have no clue and your only evidence of such is a war that is being fought based on rules of political correctness. And so far as world opinion goes, I could give a ***** less, the only time the world likes us is when we open up our pocket books and ignore our interests in favor of the interests of whatever country we are writing a check to that day.
- annienyc4, on 10/19/2007, -3/+9Igor, can you please stop sending me shouts. thanks. I tried to send you a shout about that, but it wouldn't let me.
- illycoffee, on 10/16/2007, -2/+8Swifti -- you are a bit off, bud...
Watch this 20 minute video - On Patrol in Ramadi - http://www.michaeltotten.com/archives/001523.html
AQI was most certainly running the show -- but they were brutal thugs who are no longer trusted by the populace. It was assumed that Americans would abandon Iraq like they did in 1991 so the locals felt they had no choice but to saddle up to the extremists in order to protect themselves. Not a great situation for our American military -- but our persistence is winning out and Iraq is going to be fine. We have an ally in the middle of the most unfree stretch of land on earth. Be glad. - tehpwnrate, on 10/16/2007, -0/+6Al Cicada started when a rogue pupa decided he was sick of being forced into making obnoxious noises all summer. Years and thousands of dead cicadas later, nothing has changed :(
- deity, on 10/16/2007, -4/+9Kind of similar to the left's fixation on talk radio and fox.
- Murdats, on 10/16/2007, -1/+6hhahahahaha yeah that one is pretty redicilous
oh wait, you were being serious and actually believe that joke. - NonLeftistDiggr, on 10/16/2007, -8/+13I just joined for cool tech articles and pictures.... since then I've figured out digg is largely for pro U.N. one world government anti-american socialists. So I felt it was my duty to prove not everyone out there eats up moveon.org crap like it was ice cream.
I've read more articles from unproven sources in the last 6 months than I have in my whole life. Some how personal editorial blogging is considered more credible than "corporate" media. - tehpwnrate, on 10/16/2007, -2/+7Yeah, and the left calls people "Bu$hCo shills" and "wingnut neo-cons." There are idiots at every point on the political spectrum, and to think that your group is somehow devoid of them is blinding yourself.
- donjuan571, on 10/17/2007, -0/+4Buried for author failing to grasp the english language
- Poovey, on 10/17/2007, -0/+4Twit
- heystoopid, on 10/16/2007, -1/+5But alas that's what the US Generals said about Vietnam from 1949 to 1973 that it was winnable too and they had effectively destroyed an enemy who in turn routed the so called victors in under two years !(and yes the US Military / CIA was present when the the French decided they had had enough as well , until they ran away in fear of their lives in April 75 like headless chickens to evade the war crimes they had committed had they been caught in the fall of Saigon !)
And also as always the taxpayers who pay the military for their expensive play toys is the ultimate decider of any war the military may fight !
Interestingly in France in 1960 the French General Staff said the very same thing you claimed about defeating rebels in Algeria too with a standing Army of one point four million in country ! Yet what happened in 1962 my friend , when both the French Treasury , economy and the tax payer pockets were basically empty ?
History is littered with samples of Pyrrhic army victories which ultimately led to the fall of empires since records first began !
Those that fail to learn the fatal lessons of history are but doomed to repeat them until they get it right ! - inactive, on 10/17/2007, -4/+8Well, lessee now. I've been at work for nine hours and have not written a single Iraq story. Not one. Used to be, before the surge, I'd be so busy I didn't have time for lunch. Now, I'm checking myself for cobwebs.
I know how important it is for you liberals that something bad happen in Iraq. Bad news for America is good news for liberals. But it just isn't happening. Sorry. - Monk22, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3why do you care how he uses his internet?
- RGWX, on 10/17/2007, -1/+4Somehow the number jumps about 500K every six months. Amazing...and its always from some obscure study using dodgy statistics...magic, isn't it?
- RGWX, on 10/17/2007, -0/+3Indeed.
- secretivecoward, on 10/17/2007, -0/+3Digg user igorvolsky keeps spamming his own site...buried.
- xJudahx, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3I agree. We should still be willing to listen, even as jaded as we are. This bs does need to be resolved after all.
- Monk22, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3the "mission" was to depose Saddam, then get the gov. back on their feet. thats what he said in the first speech about the war. what do you have a problem understanding.
- masterm1nd, on 10/16/2007, -9/+12Are you ***** serious. He joined 2 months ago. It's a conspiracy, I bet "theres something to follow on"? ... I think you meant paranoia or delusional disorder.
- Monk22, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3Liberals come to digg to stroke their socialist egos, whats your point.
- DiscoLando, on 10/16/2007, -2/+5Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. Can you back it up?
- tehpwnrate, on 10/16/2007, -3/+6Dude, if you're going to make a point like this, post a link and don't use stupid terms like "dopey liberal Democrats." Make your point with facts and maturity if you want to change opinions.
edit: Oh, it's ollllo. Nevermind. - BohicaTwentyTwo, on 10/17/2007, -1/+4So most people here seem to be saying that we should ignore progress against Al Qaeda in Iraq because Al Qaeda doesn't really exist?
- Matthew720, on 10/16/2007, -1/+4None of your comments include any facts on the issue at hand. All you're able to spew is personal insults. Why can't you have an intellectually honest discussion? Is it because you're incapable? Or is it because you choose no to?
- SpeaktoMe, on 10/17/2007, -4/+7I thought there was no AlQaeda in Iraq
- masterm1nd, on 10/16/2007, -4/+7Mathhew, that was the dumbest attempted rebuttal ever.
- Murdats, on 10/16/2007, -1/+4@mastermind
to be honest it was a pretty dumb argument - Murdats, on 10/16/2007, -1/+4no he is right, you only seem to ever personally attack people, maybe because all your comments are smart ass comments to other peoples personal attacks, I am not sure, but you do seem to be mostly an ***** who attacks other pople.
- illycoffee, on 10/16/2007, -0/+2Its all a conspiracy!!!!!! Down with Amerikkka!
I feel so out of control. So powerless. So worthless in a world that makes no sense to me. A conspiracy makes me feel powerful again. Each time to utter the secrets of our evil nation, I feel stronger, more in control. I feel good about myself again. - Murdats, on 10/16/2007, -1/+3wow are you egocentric, you really think your army is that poweful, dont forget the massive army of china, and the nuclear arsenal of china and russia, aswell as the smaller stockpiles of other countries.
- NonLeftistDiggr, on 10/16/2007, -1/+3Pocketbook? What the hell is that? Is this 1985? I carry 3 cards in a clip with some cash like a man should. Anyone who requires a paper check from me isn't worth the time.
- inactive, on 10/16/2007, -2/+4I was right - so you can stop harassing me now.
- Murdats, on 10/16/2007, -1/+3I think I have a new game mastermind
point out every time you are being an ***** and attacking someone without actually forming an argument. - RGWX, on 10/16/2007, -1/+3Excellent post. Totten is outstanding.
- markgl, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2why is it so hard to believe? I don't care what this website thinks, cause they're just giving opinion.
- heystoopid, on 10/16/2007, -0/+2Those from afar can see over the forest , where as those on the ground can never see past the first tree line and can only travel from one fox hole to the next !
And those charlatans in Washington can never see past their fat wallets whilst falsely claiming to be the one and only true patriots in the land ! - mclumber1, on 10/16/2007, -0/+2Why would China want America's economy to collapse? It doesn't make any sense, considering we are their biggest trading partner. You bring down America, you bring down China.
- usernam, on 10/16/2007, -2/+4Get ready for a future PR from Bush Admin. stating Blackwater as a contributing factor for Al Quaeda retreat.
- heystoopid, on 10/16/2007, -0/+2Major General Stanley McChrystal was some how involved in the Pat Tillman cover up affair as well so he is not a good choice to be used for a reference !
