- Irashtar, on 03/12/2009, -2/+44Why shouldn't American Law 101 be a required course to graduate highschool?
They could cover taxes, how and WHEN to file a lawsuit or small claims, your rights if you are arrested, what evidence is legal and why, etc. - inactive, on 03/12/2009, -4/+45Curse you Onion! Always making me go "WTF o_O" at headlines.
- Cabose, on 03/12/2009, -1/+33Am I the only one who thinks people should have to study law? I don't mean at Harvard, but should at least know what the constitution says and how to defend one's self in court.
- misreto, on 03/12/2009, -5/+36***** YOU ONION! You got me going AGAIN! I got all scared.
- spyd3rweb, on 03/12/2009, -2/+29This could be the best idea ever, most people don't have any clue about law or the court system.
- AndyManCan, on 03/11/2009, -8/+28I don't think that would be a good idea.
Oh.... The Onion. Never Mind. - trevorjez, on 03/12/2009, -3/+16By the way "experts" post here on Digg - this might not be a bad idea ;)
- iJesus, on 03/12/2009, -6/+15I was quite concerned for a minute, didn't seem to unreal...
... then I realized it was The Onion. - jftitan, on 03/12/2009, -0/+8its saddening too. Because I know I took 5 classes that was supposed to teach me about Government. American Government, Texas Government, Economics, US History, World History...(and one more class I cant remember the name to) Those five classes I did learn something, even though 3 out of 5 were right after lunch, and had monotone teachers teaching. I learned something.
As for the rest of the population around me. It just seems as if those classes were left out. That many Texans have no ***** clue what the law is, and how to interpret the meanings. The other day I was in an argument over a speeding ticket with a acquaintance who would not listen to me about the meaning of "No Contest". "That means I'm innocent right?" No... it just means your not admitting anything, and that you will just accept probation, and just be a good boy. You still have to pay the ticket.
Basic *****, and people have no clue how to do it right. Another person I know didn't know he had to go to court, and figured he would be scott free if he didn't show up. Now he 'thinks' he has a warrant.
Its lack of education, and lack of promoting the qualities, acceptance and benefits of it. Today I can't even go into a store without meeting a ***** who can't even count the change from a $10 bill without a calculator.
/rant - tacojohn48, on 03/12/2009, -0/+799% of lawyers give the rest a bad name. My friend Rich recently passed the bar exam and is currently working in India to fight the child sex slave trade.
- tacojohn48, on 03/12/2009, -0/+6when to file a lawsuit: whenever anyone makes you mad or doesn't prevent you from being a moron and injuring yourself.
rights if you are arrested: under the patriot act none - Wiggletits, on 03/12/2009, -0/+5that must explain all the ***** on digg
- PhrosTT, on 03/12/2009, -0/+4you seem to be under the impression anybody reads it. i assure you nobody in congress does.
- snobrder218, on 03/12/2009, -0/+3I read it the title thinking "How the ***** can they do this!? Are they serious?!"
...then I saw the source....and said "***** Onion!". That had me worried for a second! haha. - ryrocker, on 03/12/2009, -0/+3stfu!
from,
an expert - ChuyMX, on 03/12/2009, -0/+2bro i was like what!!! the i was like oh!! then i was like what!!! the i was like oh *****, titties!! then i was like onions?? i'm hungry!!
- videocrew, on 03/12/2009, -0/+2A year of law school won't help you with that. Most law schools don't get into statutory interpretation in the first year.
- fs88, on 03/12/2009, -0/+2Dugg because my 25 yr old brother in his last semester of law school just called me and told me he is doing another graduate program next year.
- SpykerSpeed, on 03/12/2009, -3/+5You practically NEED a year of law school just to understand all the convoluted ***** legislation out there.
- elbergel, on 03/12/2009, -1/+3dugg for "post collegiate aimlessness" lol
- rhinofinger, on 03/12/2009, -1/+3"postcollegiate aimlessness"?
More like postcollegiate impossibility-of-entering-a-failing-economy's-workforce. I'm graduating soon; I actually intended to work for a year, but that's not gonna happen. Soooo... grad school, here I come, hope the economy's better by the time I'm done with that! - ITdude472, on 03/12/2009, -0/+2It's the onion, it's obviously a joke, but with a point. Too few of us understand the laws we follow (myself included) or the government controlling them. It's too bad that an American government or civics class isn't required in all states.
- inactive, on 03/12/2009, -0/+1Onion or not, considering how many people can`t name the three branches of government or their function, I actually think this isn`t such a bad idea,
- iceman35, on 03/12/2009, -1/+2Im like no f'in way.
oh....the onion, geez - Czechxican, on 03/12/2009, -0/+1Heading off to college.
- Darmichar, on 03/12/2009, -1/+2Not sure about the other 49 states, but in Illinois you have to pass a test on the Constitution in 7th grade in order to proceed to the next grade.
Perhaps sliding that back to the Senior year would make kids take more interest in it as it would determine who graduates and who doesn't. - tacojohn48, on 03/12/2009, -0/+1There is a greasemonkey script for that. I used it to block the huffington post during the election. http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/13219
- sobe4u8k, on 03/12/2009, -1/+2You have been a Digg user since 2006 and you haven't noticed the practically daily front page onion articles?
- Hockey13, on 03/12/2009, -1/+2So you would define the Digg front page solely as a place for "real news?" I can has a TMZ ten best lolcats list?
- videocrew, on 03/12/2009, -0/+1Why do you have to be a TTT law student?
- Wiggletits, on 03/12/2009, -1/+2naw the lawyer is a scum sucking...o i see wut you did thar!
- Renork, on 03/12/2009, -0/+1Passing a test on the constitution in 7th grade does not sound like the most academically rigorous or effective manner to instill long lasting knowledge in a citizen. How many people honestly remember a substantial portion of the most important things taught in 7th grade barring they have not used that knowledge regularly?
- Cabose, on 03/12/2009, -0/+1most definitely. I think people would take a more active interest in how we are getting screwed. I live in Massachusetts and all you have to do to graduate from our school is pass 2 parts of a 3 part exam. The teachers don't teach to learn, they teach to pass.
- matthobbs05, on 03/12/2009, -2/+3Mmm... I like onions.
- ltzanders, on 03/12/2009, -0/+1I wouldn't actually mind this.
- bihaatch, on 03/13/2009, -0/+1If you don't like the Onion, it's because you're one of the many types of people that The Onion does an excellent job of ridiculing.
- bihaatch, on 03/13/2009, -0/+1I have so many friends who this article describes. so true
- xmonster, on 03/12/2009, -1/+1That was my point.... hence the sarcasm
Digg is about as informational as reddit anymore... - hucknbid, on 03/12/2009, -0/+0ur gai
- Ddraig, on 03/12/2009, -1/+1Wrong Topic...Buried
- hucknbid, on 03/12/2009, -0/+0Damn, I really wish I would have known about that during the election. I just stopped reading digg because of the damn Huffington Post. I ***** hate those people.
- Dr3w, on 03/12/2009, -3/+3Damn it, I just turned 25. Oh well, better go buy some Dockers, highlight entire pages in the Federalist Papers, make Thomas Jefferson my new favorite president, and distance myself from whatever else is socially relevant these days. It's been real guys.
- ripple123, on 03/12/2009, -1/+1i dont wanna have to check the url of every damn headline as i scan the front page. thats what im saying
- Corrosionx, on 03/12/2009, -1/+1They wouldn't want people asking too much questions about the legal meaning of certain words, like "person" , "society" and "citizen".
- ryrocker, on 03/12/2009, -1/+1me too!
i was like
"whaaaaaaaat! :O" then i was like" oooooooh! :D" - smemily, on 03/12/2009, -2/+2It would make more sense to force all 19 year olds to take an economics course. Yes, I know it's the Onion.
- ryrocker, on 03/12/2009, -1/+1lawyers r nice
=[ - tehnoobifier, on 03/12/2009, -2/+2They got me, until I saw the Playboy ad and then I wasnt sure what was going on...
- Natoration, on 03/12/2009, -2/+2a year in Business school would make more sense, given the current financial crisis
- schweeb, on 03/12/2009, -1/+1stop putting the ***** onion on the front page, jesus
