- LKnight, on 08/08/2008, -4/+15I like that Obama has a way of knitting it altogether into one cohesive plan... the economy's in the crapper, but you can't separate that from energy and the environment, which you can't separate from national security. McCain may have something to offer, but so far all we see is pandering to big donors.
Advantage: Obama - NoDrama, on 08/16/2008, -0/+5The dollar hit an 8 year high? According to who? Compared to what?
Let's compare it to, oh, say the Japanese Yen, shall we?

Oh damn, there goes matt's theory... poof.
Learn to read. Saying a thing doesn't make it so. The only remotely mystical thing that happened on that date was the 8 pound 8 ounce baby born at 8:08, nothing in the U.S. economy which -- despite oil falling back, and the fact we're trading much better vs the euro than in the first two months of the year -- remains in the crapper.

you say $114 like it's a good thing. You say it like the economy is alright. Like everything is fixed.
On what planet did the dollar hit an 8 year high? Let's check a story I read from august 9th this year...
"The euro fell the most in almost eight years against the dollar as traders pared bets the European Central Bank will raise interest rates as the economy slows." that was a good DAY for the dollar, but it wasn't an 8 year high. it was a one day spike. the dollar has fallen from $1.59 per euro on July 20th to where it is now at $1.47, a 12 cent drop in one month, hardly the stuff of 8 Year highs.
Your dollar news was a one day rally, not an eight year high. And it fell today. As much as I would like to see a stronger economy, It fell today, pretty hard actually.
I've seen a study by the brookings institute that said that both of these guys will have to increase spending. The numbers I remember, when I find the story I will post it.
The numbers: Obama will have to spend an additional $330,000,000,000 per year to do everything he wants to do, not including health care.
McCain will have to spend an additional $450,000,000,000 per year to do everything he wants to do, not including the war in Iraq or Afghanistan.
Like I said, I will post it when i find it. it's gonna be old though, that story came out in may if i remember correctly. - LKnight, on 08/16/2008, -0/+4I fail to see the connection between oil prices and Obama's understanding of the economy, but if that was the 8 year high for the dollar (not true) it would be newsworthy that we've been so low for the bulk of Bush's term more than anything else.
Of course, this chart of even the most recent comparison dollar vs euro makes mincemeat of your ridiculous assertion about the value of the dollar. http://finance.yahoo.com/currency/convert?amt=1&fr ... - littlequeenie, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1HUH???
Another measure of the economy - unemployment just hit a 5 year high.
Does McCain have any plans on keeping jobs here instead of outsourcing?? One of his key economic advisers thinks we are a nation of whiners. McCain has said the economy is fundamentally strong. Tell that to the unemployed, the underemployed, the people working at least a 40 hour week at $10 an hour raising a family (BTW this is NOT considered poverty) with little to no health care finding themselves making tough decisions about what they can actually afford and going to the food bank each week, tell that to the people losing their homes or the 18,000 people who die each year because they have no health care (this estimate from I believe the IOM which is NOT a liberal organization. I am at work and don't have my notes with me) and therefore can not afford necessary preventive care as well as medications.
I know that many factors have caused this mess and maybe you can't always blame or praise a president for the status of the economy. But you CAN BLAME the mindset and the priorities these people have which is essentially SCREW YOU if you are hurting. As Obama said in his acceptance speech, they expect you to pull yourself up by your bootstraps, even if you have no boots.
There is I hope a special place in hell for those people. - duckyinc, on 08/08/2008, -7/+4So basically obama will tax oil companies instead of people? He would have to tax the bankruptcy out of companies.
- inactive, on 08/09/2008, -7/+38-8-08 the dollar hit an 8 year high, oil dropped below $114 per barrel so NObama does not understand the economy except that it's a cow to be milked dry.
