- alapoet, on 01/03/2009, -23/+185It's not up to Obama at this point.
It's up to US.
Our role is to put big pressure on Obama, and on Congress, to implement the big changes this country needs. As stillpissed pointed out, at the top of the list is reversing the grievous damage to our Constitution which was done by the Bush administration.
It's going to take all of us, not just Obama, to see that this happens. - Moegopher, on 01/03/2009, -18/+180I would hate to think Obama was elected through empty promises. We need change.
- radu79, on 01/04/2009, -18/+146Given the fact that he voted for extending the USA Patriot act, for giving retroactive amnesty to the spying telecom companies, and so on, I would say he is going to reinforce Bush's law in this case.
As for the change, so far I have yet to see one of his votes as a senator where he stood for any significant 'change'. - stillpissed, on 01/03/2009, -8/+135This is a chance for the Obama administration to prove that they aren't just another side to the same coin. It would be all too convenient for the dems to just keep these illegal usurpations of power in place and publicly blame the previous administration for originating them. "Hey, we didn't set these precedents, we're just benefiting from them!"
The Obama administration really needs to REVERSE the damage done to the constitution by the Bush administration, not just ignore it and hope the people forget. I'm hoping they do the right thing but at the same time I'm not holding my breath. - cabdirazzaq, on 01/03/2009, -69/+155Ron Paul
- yuravian, on 01/04/2009, -10/+66He's just another one of them. Dunno how people got so obsessed over him becoming president. Not to say that the alternative was better...
- SilverStandard, on 01/04/2009, -16/+72Don't worry, America. All you have to do is to vote for a different face every 4 or 8 years and everything will be fine.
- depro9, on 01/04/2009, -21/+72Obama takes orders from the overlords like any other president. Don't expect much really. He will put on a great show but he will come up with a lot of excuses as to why he can't change anything.
- Patrikc325, on 01/03/2009, -35/+82Obama's promise was to get elected that is all.
- inactive, on 01/03/2009, -20/+55No.
- Waiting2awake, on 01/04/2009, -8/+43And yet so many so believe... and hope.... for change.
- Lazydriver, on 01/04/2009, -2/+36Well, that's cause he got elected, so Obama supporters like me are a bit more eager to make sure he's watched and criticized for violating his promises.
- stillpissed, on 01/03/2009, -17/+48Absolutely, he's not the second coming as some seem to think.
I voted for Obama and I am glad he won, he was better than the alternative (singular) and a step in the right direction. We all want to see the country get better under the new administration so it's important to keep an eye on what they are doing and not just hand them our blind trust.
Politicians often don't follow through with their promises but Americans need to follow through too. We can't just elect someone and forget about politics until the next election, it's is a continual process that we are always a part of. If we stop paying attention to the politicians then they stop paying attention to us. - EvilDoer, on 01/04/2009, -14/+44The next 4 years are going to be pure entertainment.
- zoziw, on 01/04/2009, -7/+37He'll come through on some promises, he'll pick which ones, but he isn't campaigning anymore and is going to have to take a pragmatic approach to some very challenging problems.
- greeniemeani, on 01/04/2009, -15/+45I think all the Obama-bots left Digg since he got elected if anti-Obama comments are getting dugg up...
- guitarike, on 01/04/2009, -1/+30WE need to make the change. What has the US come to when it has become acceptable for the president to decide which parts of the constitution we should adhere to? What happened to our inalienable rights, due process and habeas corpus?! These are above any president or government, and a US society should not tolerate it!
It's a thin line between what is happening now, and one day detaining a Digg user for calling the government unconstitutional. - SilverStandard, on 01/04/2009, -4/+27You should put everything he's done on a balance and see which side is heavier.
- PaperKutter, on 01/04/2009, -3/+251) dugg up for Ali al-Marri's mullet in the pic from the article.
2) yea i hope so too.......it would be really incredulous if it was all empty promises.. - 0260, on 01/04/2009, -11/+32He will continue making the government bigger like the 2 dudes before him did. No change there
- radu79, on 01/04/2009, -6/+25Well, there was more than one alternative. There was at least one good 3rd party candidate.
- radu79, on 01/04/2009, -9/+28No, the role ended when you voted for him. Now he can (and will) do whatever he wants for at least 3 years. He has the Congress on his side, so there is not much people can do about it now.
- masamunecyrus, on 01/04/2009, -3/+22@radu79:
Bob Barr sucked. He voted for the Iraq War, the Patriot Act, the spying, etc... He belonged in the Libertarian Party like Ron Paul belonged in the Republican Party. - inactive, on 01/03/2009, -27/+45This is the thing... the whole primaries were so controlled, what, in fact, did he promise? As it was, when people were allowed to ask a question... it was ONE question... with NO FOLLOW UP. Basically someone could ask "do you condone torture?" and he could say "cheese tastes like grapes" and that's your answer. And many times that's pretty much what you got.
Also, stillpissed stated earlier, and got dugg down, that he already flip-flopped... and he did. He voted for NAFTA and FISA -monumental let downs. Supposedly, he was anti-war, now he's militarize afghanistan and occupy the middle east. What incentive does he have, as President, to give up all that power anyhow? Being President is all about power. Look how power has gone to Pelosi's head... there are so many swelled up heads in congress right now, they're gonna have to widen the doors.
The bailout... democrats, one would think, would vote in the manner that would be in the leaning of the in-coming President. That only makes sense to me, yet, what he says and how they voted seem diametrically opposed.
More notable... we didn't hear a peep from him or his camp during the gaza genocide. I am just trying to connect the dots and it seems we have not improved our lot. How long do we string this thing out? Till we are at the point of no return? We are already. - UWSA, on 01/03/2009, -66/+83He has already flipped flopped on many of his positions. Did you really beleive this guy was for change when he voted for the bailout?
- depro9, on 01/04/2009, -1/+18lol ouch
- woahwoahwoah, on 01/04/2009, -16/+33I backed Obama in Pennsylvania, a critical swing state, and I'm horrified by the right-wing claims that we treat him like a Messiah. This is an unacceptable claim. I will, as an American, hold his administration accountable for their failures and give credit where credit is due. Nothing more, nothing less.
I'm deeply troubled by the "last hour" decisions Bush is in the process of making, and this utter violation of civil liberties will be one of Obama's earliest challenges. I'm cautious but, at the same time, confident that justice will prevail. - gowjo18, on 01/04/2009, -22/+38I hope Ron Paul runs again in '12. Guess he was too much change for Americans this time around. -_-*
- freefallgrue, on 01/04/2009, -1/+17There should never, EVER be a reason for someone to be held for 7 years without being charged. That man is being deprived of his liberty and has spent roughly TEN PERCENT of his projected lifespan behind bars, without having been convicted of a crime.
A fair & speedy trial should never be a "maybe" or a "sometimes", it is a right that should be afforded to all persons in the US legal system, no matter what country their passport might be from. - alexforcefive, on 01/04/2009, -3/+19You can still put pressure (mostly through the media) on elected officials, particularly to hold up their own manifestos. The term "elected dictatorship" is grossly overstated
- Daryl209, on 01/04/2009, -0/+16Dear Planet Earth,
We're a PLANET GOD DAMMIT!
Pluto - HardSide, on 01/04/2009, -4/+20I'm sorry, but what do you expect him to do? Furthermore, what are you doing to help the "incoming" administration.
- inactive, on 01/04/2009, -7/+23How the hell could he supply proof? if he produced a birth certificate you'd just say it was fake you ***** idiot. What does he need? a video of him being born with clearly labelled 'THIS ROOM IS SITUATED IN THE USA' signs? You'd still say that the video was faked. So ***** you and your baseless dumb ***** claims and get some real criticisms (there are a lot).
I don't even care about Obama but you people are so ***** stupidly annoying. - tehchicken, on 01/04/2009, -3/+18Dear Rest of World,
That sentence made no sense whatsoever.
Forever yours,
Canada - Waiting2awake, on 01/04/2009, -19/+33The only person that could have helped America... Now instead of 2 years, it will be 5 or so.
- Waiting2awake, on 01/04/2009, -8/+21That doesn't sound like change....
- pinchduck, on 01/04/2009, -2/+15Wow. Either he proves his metal and demonstrates that he is, in fact, for real change, or he has history's shortest new-president honeymoon. After his FISA vote, I am not optimistic, but I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.
- s14sh3r, on 01/04/2009, -3/+15"There was at least one good 3rd party candidate."
Cynthina McKinney, Bob Barr and Ralph Nader. Yeah, ok... - EvilDoer, on 01/04/2009, -8/+20Allow me to provide a loud deep big belly laugh at this comment. That was sarcasm right?
- GeckoSlayer, on 01/04/2009, -0/+12Dear Rest of World,
WTF mate
Australia - akchrs, on 01/04/2009, -16/+28What promise did he make? Running around preaching hope and change means nothing.
- tourettes1992, on 01/04/2009, -9/+21Fun Fact: Feb 20 is Kurt Cobains birthday
- joand315, on 01/04/2009, -4/+15Obama's supporters weren't getting paid. You're making that up. They didn't even get paid for knocking on doors. You've got Obama mixed up with McCain. He "had" to pay his "volunteers".
- vtnerd, on 01/04/2009, -3/+14Not if Obama succeeds in limiting your 2A rights. Go look up his voting record on the matter before you bury me.
- CaptRage, on 01/04/2009, -2/+13With this argument you should be blaming US, not Bush then too.
- IowaDoc, on 01/04/2009, -20/+30Please give the man a chance to have his first day in office,
- inactive, on 01/04/2009, -21/+31Obama is a product of the ***** up Chicago political machine. He got elected. That's all that matters.
Even if he "wanted" to keep his promises, he has ZERO ***** experience in Senate (voting "present" is not ***** leadership). He wouldn't know what the hell to do without his admin holding his hand like a little boy.
We're *****. - jayeiser, on 01/04/2009, -0/+10The military should never have power over the citizens....and the day the government comes into my house without proper search and seizure is the day that America has finally decided to come out of the closet about the New World Order. I on the other hand will be going out in a blaze of gun fire.
- flagelin, on 01/04/2009, -7/+17This, I hope will be the first pebble of the avalanche of change from the ilk of the Bush years; the dark times.
