Why is KBR electrocuting US soldiers?
crooksandliars.com — A U.S. House committee chairman has begun an investigation into the electrocutions of at least 12 service members in Iraq, including that of a Pittsburgh soldier killed in January by a jolt of electricity while showering.

Messed up that some of these KBR/Blackwater/Haliburton sleazebags are getting BILLIONS of our tax dollars. - GafferXL, on 03/24/2008, -3/+15The real question: Why is anybody electrocuting anybody?
If they had been electrocuting Iraqi's, American Contractors, Sunni's, Shiites, Al Queda, Hamas, Al Asqa Martyrs Brigade - whoever - would this be any less acceptable?
I don't think anyone needs to be reminded that our image in the world has been in the tank thanks to an image of a orange-masked detainee being electrocuted on a stool at Guantanamo bay.- blackjack75, on 03/24/2008, -0/+5Yes but electrocuting detainees is fine. I mean they're terrorists! They're the kind of people who would .. huh.. say.. electrocute people!
- dk911, on 03/24/2008, -1/+0It was a BLACK HOOD and the clothes were ORANGE. If you're going to make a point, make it right.
- JimmySpaza, on 03/24/2008, -32/+6Nowhere in the actual CNN story does anyone...ANYONE even Waxman allege that KBR did this intentionally, like the title of this Digg article suggests.
Any hysteria and conspiracy theories associated with these accidents is the fault of Crooksandliars.
One, you're in a combat zone. You're not going to get the best electrical codes on the planet. While this doesn't justify shoddy workmanship, it does bring context into play.
Two, has anyone estimated how many soldiers back home getting into car accidents, fall off ladders, have electrical accidents, etc.? Iraq is actually safer in terms of sheer number of accidents compared to life back home.
I say this because the premise of this Digg article is that these accidents in Iraq should never have happened if our government cared for its soldiers...a ridiculous assertion.- Dumbledorito, on 03/24/2008, -1/+23Take a look at what our government is doing in the way of veteran's benefits, especially in the realm of PTSD, and tell me again with a straight face that it "cares."
- swrostmore, on 03/24/2008, -2/+21What's ridiculous is your willful ignorance of what you are reading, Spaza. Your blind hatred for liberalism causes you to interpret anything from a liberal source in the most stupid way imaginable. Nobody who wasn't already half out of their mind with self-righteous partisan outrage would ever interpret what's written in the title/description of this article as claiming that KBR intentionally electrocuted anyone. The only "hysteria and conspiracy theories" associated with this story is your wild-eyed claim that C&R is attempting to mislead people.
- nomadxx7, on 03/24/2008, -0/+8Wow Spaza. It's happened to 12 soldiers so far and they found in 5 cases that it was due to improper grounding. PLUS the government sent a letter to the mother of the soldier saying it was a small electrical appliance in the shower (implying the soldier did it to himself). Please stop using "well how many have had accidents or fell off ladders." Soldiers have enough to worry about than getting electrocuted taking a f-ing shower. Please grow a brain stem and stop being an enabler of our government's and KBRs atrocities.
- ClosedCaption, on 03/24/2008, -0/+2Yeah, Spaza...that was awesome

- doctorfungi, on 03/24/2008, -19/+14Very, very misleading title. I had a picture of some KBR goons with a US soldier hooked up to electrodes in my head. This obviously isn't being done on purpose by KBR. Enough with the ***** spin and bias, it's really not the best way to go about approaching a situation.
- pintomp3, on 03/24/2008, -0/+21they are intentionally doing subpar work and cutting corners on the services provided to our soldiers in order to increase profits. if i intentionally used cheap brake parts in your car, i would be responsible for the accident that it may cause. it's not "let me do it this way so the soldiers get shocked", it's "let me do it this way even if the soldiers get shocked". gross neglect.

- thecatcantalk, on 03/24/2008, -1/+2Dude, if the water coming out of the barracks shower is conducting enough ungrounded electricity to kill a man, it's NOT because the KBR electrician who wired the joint performed the work correctly. If your son died because an electrician did ***** work on your house, how "tolerant and sympathetic" to his laziness and stupidity would YOU be? I suspect that's how this young man's family have taken the news, too.
The original CNN piece notes that the cause of death was an improperly-grounded water pump, which had sent a fatal electrical current through the water it pumped into the barracks showers. Perhaps the pump had been sabotaged by a liberal electrician, who was trying to make the wonderful fellows at KBR look like greedy, cost-cutting unpatriotic trash? Or maybe the dead soldier had sabotaged the pump himself, wanting to commit suicide while making a bunch of fabulously wealthy Republican vampire kings look like irresponsible assholes? You reckon? /sarcasm

KBR may not be intentionally electrocuting them but they are not providing the safety and proper living conditions that one would expect from a company being paid billions to do just that for our soldiers.

- forgiste, on 03/24/2008, -5/+1A perfect example of all the things wrong with the New World Order. Globalization is fine, but how do you justify stuff like this?
- ZackS, on 03/24/2008, -0/+26It's improper grounding of the water heaters and pumps. Without proper grounding, these systems can charge up the pipes which then discharge through the people using the shower. In the desert, it's tough to get a good ground on your electrical systems. You have to bury your ground really deep into the ground to get past the sand to some moist dirt. I'm guessing the contractor didn't bury the grounds deep enough. Either that or they did but it dried out afterward (making poor contact) and began shocking soldiers. Most people who live in deserts have similar problems. The difference is that they know that they need to occasionally water the ground poles on their electrical systems to keep them conductive and functional. Someone in the army should know this.
Anyway, this isn't a post to blame these people or blame those people. I'm sure the contractor didn't bury the pole deep enough for the conditions and I'm sure the army could have been more proactive in resolving the issue, especially such a major but common problem with an easy solution. It's a shame someone had to die for people to take notice.- allmessedup, on 03/24/2008, -0/+6You're guessing wrong. On my camp, they don't even have ground rods. They're grounding the water heaters to the water pipes. See my post further down.
- syriusblack, on 03/24/2008, -0/+2Totally agree, our instructions called for a 9 foot deep ground to be watered every morning (salt water or something). Now if you used a whatcha-ma-call-it star pattern multiple ground it was once a week. But the environment over there fluctuates so bad I could see this messing up.
OH BTW, im calling shaninagins on allmessedup camp not having grounding rods, that is the most hilarious thing I have heard. Then again he might actually know what he is talking about, and that would explain why 12 people have been electrocuted and 1 has died, because of ***** camps not doing it the right way.- allmessedup, on 03/24/2008, -1/+0I guess I shouldn't have said it in such a way that sounded like there are ZERO ground rods on my camp. I'm sure they have them in some places. But there wasn't one for the water heater in my building - I watched the guys install the new one when they noticed that it was grounded to the pipes. And, you're right, it would certainly explain the 12 deaths.
- headzoo, on 03/24/2008, -1/+13It sucks enough to find out your son or daughter (or father or mother) has died in Iraq. I think it would be absolutely horrible to find out they died while taking a shower, in a relatively safe place, because of KBR negligence.
- TonyLocNE, on 03/24/2008, -1/+6why didn't the submitter link to the CNN article that actually gave the reader half a god-damned clue of what was going on, rather than crooks and liars...?
- gcauthon, on 03/24/2008, -1/+1Why don't you bookmark CNN.com and remove digg.com from your bookmarks then? If you prefer to go directly to the source, then what are you doing on digg.com?
- CatsAreGods, on 03/24/2008, -2/+9Did anyone else notice this incident has been traced to a Chinese-made pump that didn't meet U.S. standards?
- thecatcantalk, on 03/24/2008, -0/+1Well, a Chinese-made pump, yeah, but that the pump was defective doesn't follow from simply stating that it had been made in China. Nowhere did it say that the pump "didn't meet U.S. standards".
Nothing made in America meets "U.S. standards" anyhow. (Chrysler 'K' car, anyone? Or how about a Ford Explorer with tires that explode at 70 mph? Or a brand-new $500,000 house with a roof that leaks and a septic tank that seeps feces all over the driveway? Or a highway bridge that snaps in half during rush hour?)
"U.S. standards"? What standards?

- zoom1928, on 03/24/2008, -0/+4The real negligence here is the army not teaching these poor young men to be more world-savvy. One of the first things I learned when traveling was to never touch the showerhead. In many parts of the world, especially the Caribbean, Central America, and South America, you will still find showerheads that still have built-in small water heaters. If you think accidentally hitting 120V while working on an outlet is bad you haven’t felt anything until you touch 220V while standing soaking wet in salty water naked on a tile floor. I also got hit a friend’s house that had a well house overflow from a mud slide. The mud shorted-out the 240V 40A circuit to the water lines in the house. The second time really hurt because I had one foot on the metal drain when I touched the showerhead.
- allmessedup, on 03/24/2008, -0/+4What you're saying wouldn't help. I almost got electrocuted while touching the cold water knob. See my post below.
You can't blame the troops for not knowing that their showers might be electrocuted, and you can't blame the Army for not warning them. KBR needs to be held accountable for profiteering. There are things out here that they won't fix because it's "not in their contract." Meanwhile, people are getting hurt and killed because of their greed.

- stretch611, on 03/24/2008, -0/+4No, the way the current administration worked, it went to "friends" of theirs through a no-bid contract. I doubt what they are contracted for would come close to a low bid if they actually had competition.

- SirMolle, on 03/24/2008, -0/+7Remember the ARMY Carpenters, Electricians, Plumbers, Cooks, Electronics Techs, Depot Repair (Weapons Repair) and the GOOD OLD Army Truck Driver!
We paid them BASED ON THEIR RANK per Month not 100 Dollars a shower or 65 Dollars a Plate of food.
So PLEASE Tell us how outsourcing is better for our troops and our taxpayers?- Gyre23, on 03/24/2008, -0/+0It's not, it's only better for politicians and their cronies.
- allmessedup, on 03/24/2008, -0/+19I'm in Baghdad right now and I almost got electrocuted in my shower a few months ago. I felt the tingle of electricity on the cold water knob when I was turning the water off. So, I called KBR and they sent someone out right away to investigate. Turns out that the water heater was grounded improperly. It was grounded to the water pipes. So, they put in a grounding rod and I haven't had any problems since. I'm not an electrician by any means, but can't you ground your wiring to the water pipes if the water pipes run deep into the ground? Wouldn't matter either way, really, because I don't think our water pipes run very deep into the ground here.
But they didn't voluntarily come around to check on any of our buildings. The higher-ups simply sent out a memo after the last guy got killed in the shower, and the memo told commanders to be aware of the problem and call KBR if they suspected bad grounding in their buildings. But what do most commanders know about grounding? Not much. So, it's basically up to the individual soldiers to call KBR on their own (if they even know about the problem).- tomis, on 03/24/2008, -0/+4I'm not sure why anyone would bury your comment. Thank you for giving us another perspective of the real situation over there.
- allmessedup, on 03/24/2008, -0/+4No problem. I was glad to find an article that I have first-hand knowledge about. I wouldn't have suspected it to be such a big problem, but the memo that circulated about the Marine getting killed on Camp Victory came to me about the same time that I noticed the problems with my own shower on Camp Slayer, right down the road.
- graycat, on 03/24/2008, -1/+3People who voted for Bush and feel like assholes about it now?
- dk911, on 03/24/2008, -0/+0I have to say, comments like this make me want to come back to Digg. They are non-inflammatory and not a bunch of childish finger pointing or hypocrisy.
- allmessedup, on 03/24/2008, -0/+0To be honest, I was kinda expecting someone to accuse me of being a KBR hater posing as a soldier or something. The classic "pics or it didn't happen" Digger comment, you know? Just the reaction to my comment has renewed my faith in Digg. Thanks!
- joot2112, on 03/24/2008, -0/+1This sounds screwed up too -- they're saying it's up to the commanders or the soldiers to figure out what's wrong with the grounding?? Most likely the won't find out until they get a serious jolt that might kill them. You were lucky to feel a "tingle" -- that opportunity won't always exist. Why is it on the soldiers to find the problem instead of the contractors whose JOB it was to make those things?
- allmessedup, on 03/24/2008, -0/+0A friend of mine explained it to me as classic profiteering. They do EXACTLY what's in their contract - nothing more. If you want them to repair electrical grounding, but "repair electrical grounding" isn't in their contract, they'll make you rewrite the contract to include it and then charge you more for it. I don't know if this is exactly the case here, but it's possible. There's really no excuse for them to not be checking EVERY building now - especially after so many deaths.

Just learn a few odd things that most Americans wouldn't likely know, like saying "barrister" instead of "prosecutor," and you can get by easily. Actually, when I was a bumbling tool of a tourist in France everyone assumed I was from Britain. I didn't correct them very often.
- dk911, on 03/24/2008, -0/+0Chesterfield and serviette, anyone?
- thecatcantalk, on 03/24/2008, -0/+1It's easy to pass as British...just do everything really, really badly. And slowly. With no work ethic.
- stretch611, on 03/24/2008, -2/+3KBR - Overbills, moves corporate headquarters out of the US, and now kills our own troops through negligence... WTF? Cancel all their contracts and investigate them already. Unfortunately I doubt that will happen until Jan 20, 2009.
- akula89, on 03/24/2008, -0/+4when will this madness stop? what will it take until good American people begin to stand up and say "no more"? I pray it is soon

- rcarroll215, on 03/24/2008, -0/+1I've been in those showers (Bagram AB, Afghanistan) and the conditions are unbelievable. There are exposed wires everywhere. On top of that, the heaters didn't work, the sink drains were leaking all over the floor, the shower water was freezing. There were also exposed wires in the sleeping areas. It's an accident waiting to happen.
- iamthearm, on 03/24/2008, -0/+0The title makes it sound like KBR is doing this on purpose. The CNN article says nothing about a conspiracy.
