- inactive, on 07/21/2008, -10/+62Obama won't hold them accountable. He has already proven that with his votes in the Senate.
- aussiejan, on 07/21/2008, -8/+55Didn't Ford pardon Nixon when he took over? I'm sure Bush and Co. would expect the same, ahem, courtesies from McCain. On the other hand, Obama would be under enormous pressure to see that somebody sees the inside of a jail cell.
- Rotzooi, on 07/21/2008, -13/+55I hate it when right-wing extremists claim the Democrats control Congress. 49-49-2 does not 'control' make, sir. It's a deadlock, hence the low approval ratings: nothing can get done.
Now, the 2005-2007 Congress was very much Republican controlled, 44-55-1 - and they are the ones who ***** things up. - inactive, on 07/21/2008, -5/+42I'll go out on a limb and say: because he's a republican.
Shocking!! - redchina, on 07/21/2008, -33/+70You think Obama would hold the Republicans accountable? The Democratically controlled congress (with its 9% approval rating) has accomplished absolutely nothing in holding Bush accountable. All they do is whine about how drilling for more oil is bad for the environment.
- Ansible, on 07/21/2008, -1/+27Well there won't be pressure from the 'off-the-table' democratic leadership. That's because they have been complicit in Bush's wiretapping and torture programs. They don't want prosecution any more than Bush does.
- GreatSunJester, on 07/21/2008, -2/+26Or even simpler reasoning -- HE IS FROM THEIR PARTY.
In shocking related news, the Democrat party wants Obama to win. - homercles337, on 07/21/2008, -5/+28You know the polish guy has a point. The Senate has 100 members, while the House has 435. Nonetheless, the point is valid. The Dems do NOT control congress. They barely have a majority. For redretard, the house and senate both need over 66% (2/3rds) to override a veto. Also, for the historians, President ***** didnt use a single veto in his first 6 years in office. Since the dems took majority he as used 8. President ***** is truly a detriment to this country.
- Caffeinate, on 07/21/2008, -6/+24Yes, but I agree with aussiejan, Obama will be under *enormous* pressure to put them in a jail cell, and as an American citizen, I will do everything I can to make sure Obama feels that pressure and encourage others to do the same. The Justice department will also have a different group of people, rather than Bush associates, which has been a major stumbling block to getting some charges with teeth filed against the White House thugs.
- duggtodeath, on 07/21/2008, -6/+24*in 4Chan tone of voice* Diebold will take care of Obama.
- preban, on 07/21/2008, -12/+29Jesus Christ you people never fail to make me laugh. Obama will do NOTHING to prosecute Bush or his buddies. Please note that the Democrats have abetted Bush in practically everything he has done. Or at least turned a blind eye. Nothing will change. You can take that to the bank, just don't cash it cause the bank is out of money.
- Rotzooi, on 07/21/2008, -6/+20As long as McCain is running on a 'lower taxes' promise, he is not to be taken seriously. The Republican government ran up so much debt, we HAVE to start paying that off, or 40 years down the line we will still be sending interest to China.
Not all the stupid rebate checks in the worlds will fix that problem. - AndrewDB, on 07/21/2008, -3/+14Republicans want a republican to win..
Gee. Who the ***** would of thought that'd be a revolutionary idea? - norman619, on 07/21/2008, -0/+10Nope. I'm willing to bet one of the major reasons no one is really going after Bush is that they have lots of juicy dirt on the other scum in office. It functions like a dead-man switch. Only a naive person would think none of the other people in our government are guilty of highly questionable, if not illegal, activities. Blackmail and extortion aren't tactics used only by the Mafia. The other major organized crime organization (the federal gov) is well practiced at it as well. Party BS is for show. It's designed to distract the American people. The fact that these scum actually sued the American people when the PEOPLE voted for mandatory term limits spoke volumes. These people forgot they work for us.
- pushmouse, on 07/21/2008, -0/+9No. The Democrats watch the Republicans backs. The Republican's would prosecute the Democrats.
- AlbinoRaven, on 07/21/2008, -3/+11It could be more of the same. Run up more debt, ply the cronyism and wholesale liquidation of North America.
Just a guess mind you. - inactive, on 07/21/2008, -4/+12Apparently, judging by my current negative digg count, Rotzooi isn't the only person who thinks Congress has 100 members.
@homercles337
If I may add something to your history lesson:
He's vetoed 12 bills all total, and has had 4 of those overturned. So Congress has successfully overturned 33% of his vetoes (which is a pretty damn high percentage). The second highest percentage only to the 52% that Andrew Johnson had overturned.
In fact, Bush's last three vetoes have been overturned. - Airforcefalco, on 07/21/2008, -5/+13Rotzooi, you know the Democrats are not even trying and that they could do more than rolling over on their backs.
Pelosi said that impeachment was off the table from the start. They have given the President more than he has even asked for in war funding and others. Obama and the Democrats have flip flopped on FISA and on other items. They focus on issues that don't concern them (Steroids in baseball). Oh and they get a ton of vacation time. Did I miss anything? - cplusplus, on 07/21/2008, -0/+7I agree, it doesn't really need a lot of thought.
- cdigioia, on 07/21/2008, -0/+7Interesting theory, tell me more about these "parties" your speak of?
- quandrum, on 07/21/2008, -3/+9Unless you are in the top 5%, you will have lower taxes under Obama. If you're in the top 5%, than McCain's your man!. All 100 of you.
- Indpthinker, on 07/21/2008, -8/+14Under a continued republican administration, the campaign of fear continues, the economy continues to tank, the general population becomes unhealthier- because they can't afford health care and the Republicans have a mainly submissive population. They can do whatever the hell they want, because the majority of the American population is too ***** stupid to realize what's going on.
- Zzone, on 07/21/2008, -0/+6I don't think anyone is seeing any jail time. The system is built for Fall guys.
- Screwy1138, on 07/21/2008, -2/+8If you think for one minute that Obama is going to do anything about it, you're dead wrong. The parties watch each others' backs these days.
- xiambax, on 07/21/2008, -5/+10I'm sick of old white dudes with no perception of reality being in office.
Government should exist to protect the people.
Not ignore there voice. Imprison millions. Allow world banks to help drive their people into debt.
We all need to wake the ***** up people - MoistVonLipwig, on 07/21/2008, -1/+6Maybe they want him to win since he's also a republican...maybe a 5 year old kid knows that?
- inactive, on 07/21/2008, -0/+5@homercles337
Here's a couple of links since I know that people aren't fond of Wiki as a sole source.
http://uspolitics.about.com/od/electionissues/tp/B ... (has not been updated to show the Medicare veto or the Farm Bill veto)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States ... (it's wiki, but it is current)
I'd post more, however most of the tallies out there are only accurate in relation to the dates the stories were published. So sadly, in this case wiki is currently the most up to date and the most accurate.
**Sidenote: Bush did veto one bill before the Democrats gained control, it was the Stem Cell research bill. - eldudereno, on 07/21/2008, -2/+7Oh really, the democrats voted for the illegal iraque war and the FISA bill allowing for unwarrented wiretapping and allowing bush and cheny to carry on regardless.
does any body know what obama stands firm on and what he really will do if he is elected?, the democrats generaly are just as bad as the republicans - kevinkitching, on 07/21/2008, -1/+6Repulicans Desire Republican President.
In other news, scientists learned that orange juice may come from oranges. - homercles337, on 07/21/2008, -2/+6@Polish, i would like see a link on that number of 12. Nonetheless, my point was that President ***** has not used a veto until the dems took their pathetic majority. This means that the Dems are doing their job--a little.
- dmjarrington, on 07/21/2008, -2/+6Dugg down for truth. They think you like John McCain. Ha.
- stretch611, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4By no means do I wat to let this do nothing congress off the hook, but their is one other important factor...
In order to convict during an impeachment trial, you need a 2/3 vote in the senate. There is no way that they will get enough republicans to impeach Bush. - Abomonog, on 07/21/2008, -1/+5Problem is that duggtodeath is most likely right. I wholly expect a totally rigged election this year.
- Hetman, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3Damn whitey always keeping the black man down.
- OswaldKenobi, on 07/21/2008, -2/+5Buried as inaccurate. McCain or Obama, the Bush Administration is safe from any type of prosecution.
- fulibs, on 07/21/2008, -1/+3It comes from a bottle, stop spreading false information.
- fulibs, on 07/21/2008, -1/+3Down with whitey!
- Airforcefalco, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2It isn't like they tried either stretch611.
Sometimes you take a stand for what is right, even if you are the minority. It doesn't matter if it passes or not but at least you can say you tried. They could keep introducing bills everyday that cut funding, introduce articles of impeachment, fillabuster bills, etc. to make a symbolic stand for what is right instead of doing whatever it is that they are doing now.
Anyway it isn't like Congress has more important issues on the table, or too much on their plates. - Terr01, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2Okay, YES, the margin of control is only a few percentage points. YES, the Republicans can block almost anything in the Senate by using a 40-vote filibuster.
However, while I defended Democrats months ago, the poll data that I used has changed.
When you ask people about "Democrats in Congress" and "Republicans in Congress" (a much better indicator than "Congress In General") the Democrats have sunk to join the Republicans at extremely low approval on their own merits, or lack thereof. It used to be all the Republicans' fault that "Congress" had a low approval rating, but not any more.
So huzzah. I gave the Democratic majority their chance, I defended them while they were still getting on their feet, but at this point I'm happy to criticize them for all the crap they've passed. (Good things they fail to pass--now that part *is* the Republican's fault, but it's not my main beef with 'em.) - darkphenox, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2and if Bush dose not like something he vetos it Dems do not have control they just have majority and not a big enough one.
- pyrotix, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2rules 1 and 2 = broken
- ShaoKahn, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2Knowledge.
It's worth more than money.. - Airforcefalco, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2You mean to tell me otbeverly that, with all of their experience (most of them are incumbents) and the funding that goes into staffing their office, that they do not have enough time to introduced to committee?
How much time did you get off for the 4th of July? Congress had a week off during the 4th.
The 110th Congress 1st Session had 167 days in session.
The 110th Congress 2nd Session had (so far this year) 87 days in session.
From the way they take time off you would think that they have nothing better to do.
Oh wait, I forgot, they need to raise millions so that they can keep getting over half of the year off. Campaign money obviously is more important.
Maybe they should be on the same schedule that the other 95%+ federal employees take if they can't get anything done. Vacation and time off is no reason to NOT do the right thing. - jshooter1377, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2Well, we shall steal them from Sam's Club or Costco. They have lots.
- rthakidn, on 07/21/2008, -3/+5Obama will do nothing. He's got a record of doing nothing. He'll continue to do nothing, and we'll all just take it, because Rep or Dem, they're players in the same game. As long as no one loses they both win. Further, cleaning up corruption WILL cripple Washington, because both sides of the aisle are on the take. For politicians, there is no money in honesty.
- Hetman, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2Have you seen the rent on cardboard boxes these days? It is outrageous.
- Nichevo, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2Ya, just like Pelosi is feeling the pressure... If you think Obama is any different than any other politician I have a bridge to sell you.
- otbeverly, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2You know, most of those are shots of the oil rig (the first one and subsequent photos of oil rig near the Cochran-Africatown Bridge in Mobile, AL) that broke away from its moorings on the Mobile River before Katrina even came ashore, though water levels were beginning to rise as the storm surge came in. I work for the newspaper that took those pictures and weathered the hurricane less than a mile away.
Nonetheless, your premise is wrong. That link does not provide an accurate example of oil rigs that were damaged while drilling offshore. The most prominent and iconic of those images (detailed above) was being repaired at the time and wasn't even drilling. I'm sure there was plenty of damage to oil rigs in the Gulf, but I'm also sure production had been shut down. I never saw oil slicks in the water that were above average (In many places along the Gulf Coast - and elsewhere, I assume - you can see the rainbow colors of an oily film on top of the water in some inland areas where there isn't as much water flow) along the Coast after the storm. And since Mobile got hit harder than I expected, I even weathered the next two weeks at my sister's house on Orange Beach -- which ironically sustained no damage just 60 miles away and had power restored that night -- until my power was restored in the city.
As far as the impact of petroleum picked up as waters moved inland in Louisiana and reached some of the refineries and storage facilities along the Mississippi River as well as picking up some of the contaminants in the soil, we'll never know. However, the assertion that offshore rigs were in some way responsible for any pollution along the Gulf Coast after the storm is simply absurd. - wilywondr, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2He is already 71. If he happened to get extremely lucky and win in 08 I seriously doubt anyone would elect a 75 year old to a second term.
- splendidmike, on 07/21/2008, -2/+4Sorry, you don't really expect Obama to launch criminal investigations into the Bush administration if he's elected, do you? Obama is still of the establishment, my friends. Maybe if Nader wins...
