- jellygraph, on 10/13/2008, -12/+191The answer is because there are no questions to be asked, only an opportunity for smears to distract from Americans real problems.
- Clerg, on 10/13/2008, -10/+137I love how Republicans are so suddenly interested in "voter fraud". Funny but voter fraud didn't seem to interest them at all in Ohio in '04 or Florida in '00. But now that they are on the verge of losing, ACORN is the worst thing on the planet because they might have had turned in some bad voter registration cards.
The real reason Fox/Right Wing/ Conservatives don't like ACORN is that they register poor people, ethnics, to vote and that is the most distasteful thing of all to them. They think you shouldn't be able to vote unless you own 7 houses and your wife is worth $100 million because, after all, they are the only real true Americans.
If you are a member of the middle class, or ethnic, and vote Republican you are voting against your own self-interests.
- DD2CC2U, on 10/13/2008, -5/+90Chicago Annenberg Challenge, Not a radical group, and Ayers didn't run it
Ayers was a founding member of the militant Vietnam-era anti-war group the Weathermen. He was investigated for his role in a series of domestic bombings, but the charges were dropped in 1974 due to prosecutorial misconduct. He is now an education professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and actively engaged in the city's civic life.
Chicago Annenberg Challenge, a charity endowed by publishing magnate Walter Annenberg, a conservative, that funded public-school programs in Chicago from 1995 to 2001.
Let's look at a few, starting with the funder. Annenberg was a lifelong Republican and former ambassador to the United Kingdom under President Richard Nixon. His widow, Leonore, has endorsed McCain. Kurtz might just as plausibly have accused Obama and the foundation of "translating Annenberg's conservatism into practice."
Among the other board members who served with Obama were: Stanley Ikenberry, former president of the University of Illinois; Arnold Weber, former president of Northwestern University and assistant secretary of labor in the Nixon administration; Scott Smith, then publisher of the Chicago Tribune; venture capitalist Edward Bottum; John McCarter, president of the Field Museum; Patricia Albjerg Graham, former dean of the Harvard University Graduate School of Journalism, and a host of other mainstream folks.
"The whole idea of it being radical when it was this tie of blue-chip, white-collar, CEOs and civic leaders is just ridiculous," said the foundation's former development director, Marianne Philbin.
http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements ... - USArugula, on 10/13/2008, -12/+65Because McCain is a pussy.
- PsilocybinCube, on 10/13/2008, -5/+49If McCain brought up Ayers at a debate that would be something to see.
I'd love to see the #1 graduate of Harvard Law going up against someone who has the public speaking skills of a mother running for the head of PTA(that being both McCain and Palin).
That being said...what in the world is so bad about William Ayers. If he is a terrorist, why isn't he behind bars? why didn't he kill people?
Ayers, known as a 'radical', was simply trying to fight back against a government that was exponentially more radical than himself. A government which locked 18-year-olds who refused to go to Vietnam in jail as if they'd done something wrong.
And for those who did go, they were sent to a war that the US had no true intent of ever winning. - aussiejan, on 10/13/2008, -0/+35Actually that was Mark Twain but excellent quote.
- jellygraph, on 10/13/2008, -2/+37I believe it was Abraham Lincoln who once said:
It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt. - kanabiis, on 10/14/2008, -4/+39The Ayers controversy is another red herring used to scare dumb people.
If you work with a gay man, does that make you gay? (not that there is anything wrong with that)
If you work with a guy that loves Chevrolet, does that make you a corvette owner?
If you work with a guy that has posters of Hitler on his wall does that make you a nazi?
If you go to a guys house for a party and that guy is in the bathroom snorting Coke, are you a coke head?
If your best friend did time from raping a girl, does that make you a rapist, or even a rape apologist?
There is not a single person anywhere in this country that is so clean that nobody that they associate has done
something 'objectionable In their life. Guilty by association is only ever used to stir the dumb masses. - moliver21, on 10/13/2008, -6/+40All this focus does is prove that McCain and Palin are DESPERATE to win this election. They cannot face Obama/Biden on the issues at hand, so they are trying to win it the only way they can. What blows my mind is that there are people out there that will vote for McCain/Palin NO MATTER WHAT because of their image. Old White Guy, Gmilf Hotty, talking about freedom and Old Glory and all this crap that has absolutely nothing to do with the things that matter most right now.
I'm sick of it. - merelywatching, on 10/13/2008, -5/+38It is way beyond time that McCain and Palin start answering the questions that the citizens of the United States are asking ABOUT THEM -rather than ignoring us and telling us ask Barack Obama more questions!!
As their behavior and the facts have proven, neither McCain or Palin have an ethical or moral bone in their entire bodies and should be disqualified from continuing thier useless campaign. - fishbeef33, on 10/13/2008, -3/+34Bingo. Folks, don't even bother reading the article...thirty3down just summed it up in 17 words.
- shupy, on 10/13/2008, -3/+32No, all charges against Ayers were dropped.
I remember the Weatherman, I am stunned that folks are making such a big deal out of this. It really wasn't that important at the time. Nixon was committing high crimes and half the country was out in the streets protesting the war. - jellygraph, on 10/14/2008, -2/+29I have to admit, I was not alive at the time, so I don't know what it was like back then. But from the research I've done, it appears that the weather underground was an organization that made it a point not to harm anyone, but to threaten to bomb buildings and such for every bomb theUS govt used on the Vietnamese (in the end, some of their member accidentally killed themselves though).
I guess you could liken them to Greenpeace or Fight Club or whatever. Their status as terrorists is way overblown, that's for sure, but I don't agree with their methods, of course. Threatening to bomb things does not win public opinion, even if you believe it's for the greater good. Violence should _never_ be a means to an end, not just on a political level, but on a moral level. But those were different times and I have to take that into account. However, to equate it with real terrorism that exists in the world we live in where innocent people get murdered is a bit of a joke - it is completely dishonest. The problem is that most people nowadays cannot remember those times and will not pick up on the distinctions, because we are in an election season where people will grab onto whatever BS to reinforce their personal prejudices.
Fact of the matter is, what Ayers believes has nothing to do with Obama, even if they live in close proximity or happened to be part of the same organization or even spoke a few times. We don't jail neighbors to people who have commited crimes, assuming that somehow their influence has corrupted people within their vicinity. That's just absurd. And Ayers was hired and served among republicans and democrats alike. Why not attack them, eh? In any event, Ayers is doing far more good for society now, than he did in his past.
The problem is, I've already spent more than 3 words, which is more than any republican will ever be willing to read, unless it fits in with their own prejudices.
Fact of the matter, Obama is deeply concerned with Ameria and wants to help heal the problems in America that still persist, or have come back because of Bush. He's a man of integrity, which you can see through his campaign. I can't say as much for McCain, because, while I think he's a good person, he's allowed himself to be surrounded by the same crooks that surrounded themselves around Bush. Not good - hat2021, on 10/13/2008, -4/+30Answer: Didn't Obama work with Ayers for an educational foundation started by former ambassador to the United Kingdom Walter Hubert Annenberg, who served under President Richard Nixon. Are you suggesting that Nixon associates with terrorists!? And doesn't the president of said foundation endorse McCain? wait! McCain associates with terrorist employers?! Those are some pretty outrageous charges you're making there buddy.
...and Ayers was never charged or convicted of anything, right? And didn't he win an education award from Chicago's mayor? Almost as if he's no longer a radical but just a middle aged man who used to be more of an idiot?
And while we're on the subject wasn't Mr. Palin a member of a separatist movement. ...you know like the guys who started the civil war. Something about "Alaska First -- Alaska Always." and "The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government." Wow that sounds really domestic terrorist to me and She's married to him. Wouldn't that mean she's not trying to put someone who loosely associates with someone who 40 years ago used to associate with terrorists in the white house; but that she's trying to put an actual terrorist, who actually hates America so much that he thinks his state should separate, in the actual white house?
I'm really not sure what side the Republicans are arguing for anymore. I mean after saying McCain and Nixon associate with terrorists and Palin shouldn't be in the white house because she sleeps with a terrorist sympathizer. That is some inflammatory nonsense and I hope they cut it out.
Because if you don't agree with taxing people who earn $200,000+ a year a slightly higher percent (rather then an extremely lower percent) that's ok. Vote McCain; I don't mind. People can disagree about tax math and still be friends. But if you honestly think that all this BS about which serving Senator of the United States of America is more closely associated with terrorists is anything but BS: please don't vote, you're an idiot and will ruin it for the rest of us ...who are deciding on the issues (remember those? Or did they go down the drain with your 401(k) after all the helpful deregulation? - READY2000, on 10/13/2008, -7/+31Let me answer that on behalf of Palin...
We the republican party must unite and save this country from the arab black man. We have to vote for McCain to save the white race. We cannot allow the black man to take way our guns, white females, beef jerky and our beer. We must all vote for McCain. - shupy, on 10/13/2008, -4/+28Reality is that ACORN has been very aggressive in rooting out false registrations.
High turner vote out has always favored Democrats.
Country first? The right wing has been doing its best to suppress voter turnout for a long time. - jellygraph, on 10/13/2008, -4/+24It's not a scandal. They had bad registrations. Happens all the time, even on the republican side. I am sure you have registered to some website under a pseudonym before. That's basically what it is.
In any event, bad registrations __don't ever___ amount to votes, so saying it is a scandal is like an admission of not even knowing how the elections work. And republicans are using this as an excuse to get judges to allow them to strike more and more people off the electorial roll. What is the real crime here then? - JoeMondo, on 10/14/2008, -5/+25Please McCain, please make a point blank charge against Obama about his relationship with Ayers.
Please do it so Obama can wipe the floor with your pathetic campaign with his response. - EarlOfLade, on 10/14/2008, -3/+22John McCain doesn't care about Americans...
John McCain only care about one person - himself
John McCain only cares about one thing - the Presidency
You can see it on videos of his speeches, when he fires off a tirade, he stops and the smile he let's out is so fake and his body language is telling me everything I need to know. The man is smiling at his own presumed greatness. An empty shell is what I see. - carby, on 10/14/2008, -1/+19OffPiste. Nuf said.
- WasabiBomb, on 10/14/2008, -1/+17Actually, Cognizance, it DOES make Ayers innocent. "Innocent until PROVEN guilty", remember?
You can't say someone's guilty if you can't PROVE he's guilty. It's kind of the cornerstone of our entire legal system. - inactive, on 10/14/2008, -3/+18This is why I laugh when I see people living in $50k house with a frickin Mccani/Palin sign in their front lawn, it's really sad to see poor people believe their crap (I think both sides have their own agenda's but I mean come on a "conservative" that lives in a $50k house is just laughable. I'm sure they laugh at it also.
- Fr33th0t, on 10/14/2008, -1/+16Not like McCain ever supported ACORN.
http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/1008/Acorn_ ... - JonathanMead, on 10/13/2008, -6/+20This is ridiculous.. I can't believe how low McCain and the Republican party have gone. Oh wait, yes I can.
- HallStyle, on 10/14/2008, -6/+18I am tired of People saying what is Obama hiding. Don't you think if he was hiding something someone would have found out by now? The whole argument is stupid. What does John McCain have to hide? He was to SCARED to mention it in the debate what does that tell you? It must not be true!
http://www.hallstyle.blogspot.com - sathias, on 10/14/2008, -0/+12So... he was never charged but according to McCain and Palin is still a terrorist? Nice to know they have such respect for the rule of law, and the concept of innocent until proven guilty.
- JoeMondo, on 10/14/2008, -1/+13The ACORN nut? What do you call the Republicans who attended ACORN rallies?
- shupy, on 10/13/2008, -3/+15Yes, that's it. The only people still talking about this are those who remain willfully ignorant.
- cognizance8, on 10/14/2008, -3/+15The charges were dropped mainly due to illegal surveillance. This means they had him on tape doing something wrong but it was thrown out because the material was collected illegally. This does not make Ayers innocent, it means he was let off due to a technicality. In fact, one of his accomplices, still faces charges.
http://factcheck.barackobama.com/factcheck/2008/04 ... - doublefelix, on 10/14/2008, -10/+21Some cracker ***** stole all the Obama signs from our neighborhood last night. Obviously calling Obama a 'muslim (deep, deep) sleeper cell terrorist' is working to appeal to the maturity level of McCains base.
- Fullvinyl, on 10/14/2008, -1/+12They won't get the truth they want to hear. They would get the real truth, which is that no matter what Ayers may or may not have done, and no matter where his sympathies lie when it comes to this country, it has ***** ALL to do with Barack Obama, or his ability to run the country more effectively than McCain, or maker forbid, Palin.
- EarlOfLade, on 10/14/2008, -3/+14@SpankkBankk: To bad you didn't follow the advice but had to open your mouth (figuratively) and confirm it!
- JoeMondo, on 10/14/2008, -1/+11And what's McCain's excuse for not bringing it up?
- inactive, on 10/14/2008, -0/+10John Sidney McCain. We can also say people's middle names!
- inactive, on 10/14/2008, -0/+10Good decision. Right now, I only suspect that you're a moron. Had you continued, that suspicion might have been confirmed.

"And the notion that somehow as a consequence of me knowing somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago, when I was 8 years old, somehow reflects on me and my values doesn’t make much sense."
Hmmm, he said he knew him. Wow, the whole quote really kills your point, doesnt it? Nice selective quoting. - spookyttws, on 10/13/2008, -3/+12Palling around with terrorists? Hardly.
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?story ... - WilD9, on 10/13/2008, -5/+14Is this the Ayer of the "Throw your hands in the Ayer, Ay, Ayer" song? If so, the reason is simple: Obama be down with the ebonics while the honkey don't.
- plumcider, on 10/14/2008, -0/+9So you're saying that you don't respect kids or the elderly? Nice. And that all of us who support Obama are leeches, apparently. How lovely of you. You're a winner of a human, aren't you?
It's strange, though. It seems to me as if it is the very rich sucking the country dry right now. Funny, that. - Dustin00, on 10/14/2008, -0/+8Palin keeps wanting to.
The pitbull thinks its own leg is a turkey drumstick. - HallStyle, on 10/14/2008, -5/+13Yes! Yes, John McCain is a PUSSY! He doesn't have the GUTS to speak MAN TO MAN to Barack Obama! He doesn't even look at Obama! Why because he knows he isn't half the Man Barack Obama is.
http://www.hallstyle.blogspot.com - inactive, on 10/14/2008, -0/+8Obama can ask McCain about Keating 5, about his friends that are now convicted felons, and he's damn lucky he isn't one too. How about Cindy McCain who forged prescriptions, and stole drugs from poor sick children, all in the name of charity. She should have done jail time too. Then there's Palin who was just found guilty of abusing her power, and could be impeached. The funny part is she's still lying about it! In addition, the Palin's belong (ed) to the AIP, and they don't like America very much, well at least not the lower 48. They are considered terrorist by some. There is very recent video that the Palin's are still very much involved with that group. :0

I am a staunch conservative. Nothing will change my belief that that conservatism is the right methodology for leadership. I also firmly believe that Senator Obama is not the right leader for our country. You may not agree, and that is OK.
I also do not think that McCain is the right leader for the country. I find it funny that so many on the right who, not too long ago, were very critical of McCain for his actions as a Senator, now prop him up as the best thing for everyone. I find it equally funny that those on the left who embraced him strongly are now very opposed to his presence. - troyfoley, on 10/14/2008, -2/+10... doggonit, don't cha know.
