- ladycook99, on 04/04/2008, -33/+271No it doesn't excuse his "racism" however it does show there's more to him that a sum total of 30 secs of sound bytes repeated over and over and over ad nauseum
- DocDEB, on 04/04/2008, -8/+165A true patriot is not "My country right or wrong." A true patriot speaks up when his country is wrong and tries to right the wrong any way he can.
- jbdobd, on 04/04/2008, -3/+100The sermon they're afraid you'll listen to all of: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFZROa0rlMU
- KegBol, on 04/04/2008, -8/+101As a fairly conservative Brit, with a lot of love for America, I have to say I am quite alarmed at what a bunch of ***** right-wing america is these days. So someone's preacher said something nasty about your system? *****, I say worse than that about my own system and still consider myself patriotic. The black american community lived, and live through ***** times, of course they're gonna be angry about it, and anger has a habit of coming out sounding worse than it was supposed to, especially out of context. You never said a bad word about black guys playing music too loud or looking all aggressive? I have, and I've said it to my black mates. Doesn't make me a racist. It makes me an arsehole. I live with it.
For *****'s sake, man up and act like you weren't born yesterday. - syncr, on 04/04/2008, -18/+94An interesting point, but I don't think anyone is excusing his racism. The article simply suggests that it is incorrect to label him unpatriotic.
Hitler was obviously very proud of his country and heritage. No one would accuse Hitler of being unpatriotic either. - brufleth, on 04/04/2008, -17/+83Please explain how he's racist. I've only seen videos of a minister using hyperbole to express grievances with a country and system which has stepped on minorities to build its wealth and often continues to do so.
I've also seen excerpts of the same minister talking about fighting that haze of racism with unconditional love for those who would make themselves your enemy.
So is he racist for expressing the general state of things in this country, for using definitive language for expressing anger towards those who trespass against him, or for asking his followers to love those who align themselves against them? - tomazkovacic, on 04/04/2008, -20/+81Quote:While this young man was serving six years on active duty, Vice President Dick Cheney, who was born the same year as the Marine/sailor, received five deferments, four for being an undergraduate and graduate student and one for being a prospective father. Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, both five years younger than the African-American youth, used their student deferments to stay in college until 1968. Both then avoided going on active duty through family connections.

You guys and gals in the US of A sure have some sneaky sons of bi*$%es for ur elected leaders! This clearly shows that you are owned by the media.
Let me give you one word of advice from a one out of many neglected and philosophers of ur country:
"Think for yourself and question authority" - Dr. Thimothy Leary - kynn, on 04/04/2008, -13/+63The country is ripe for another "Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?" moment. One of my hopes for Obama is that he will be the one to deliver this reminder. The media lynching of Wright warrants it.
- saxreturns, on 04/04/2008, -3/+40True patriots should ALWAYS speak up when they see their country being ruined.
- Hillsfar, on 04/04/2008, -5/+37You're comparing a Southside Chicago church leader and community activist who for 30 years has provided services and programs to help the poor and homeless. You probably haven't heard the entirety of his speeches. And most certainly he hasn't killed or imprisoned a singled person... And you're comparing him to the evil German leader responsible for the death and torture of millions. Have you a sense of proportion? Comments like yours are divisive, unpatriotic, mean-spirited, vindictive - un-American.
- brufleth, on 04/04/2008, -10/+41Oh look more pointless spam from RepubOperative. How unexpected.
- Jenadae, on 04/04/2008, -10/+40Meh, can we get over this already? Theres much more going on in the world then one mans opinions on things.
- saxreturns, on 04/04/2008, -9/+37"He uses the pulpit to convince his flock that America is run by a bunch of rich white people who's main thrust is to prevent them from succeeding."
Remind me again, who's in the White House? Ok, keeping the black man down may not be their main objective, but they definitely want to make as much money as possible while keeping the poor poor, in my opinion. - saxreturns, on 04/04/2008, -0/+22Isn't that what the media wants us to believe about pretty much everyone?
- theuniversal, on 04/04/2008, -14/+36"Too bad he is doing his part to tear apart this country. His racist comments and anti American rhetoric are disgusting."
Right back at you. - brufleth, on 04/04/2008, -4/+24So you searched for "pointless spam" and decided to insert your's there too?
- plytheman, on 04/04/2008, -10/+28Hey, it's not every day us white folk can play the race card! Leave us be in our glory, goddamnit, your logic serves no place here.
- inactive, on 04/04/2008, -13/+29I don't even use the word patriot anymore. Most people believe that patriotism means sacrificing yourself for the government under which you live. All governments are just glorified forms of organized crime. People that serve in the military, I'm sure mean well, but they are not doing anything to make the American citizens more free or more safe despite what the government propaganda and the media tells us. They are doing the total opposite, they are tools for the political class. Tools for tyranny and oppression. There hasn't been a war since the Revolutionary war that has made the American citizens more free.
Stay loyal to yourself, your friends, and your family. The government is the equivalent to a slave owner and your the slave. You don't owe it anything, it owns you.
Want to do something for freedom, arm yourself, become a rifleman and prepare to defend yourself against the tyrannical government. - Abomonog, on 04/04/2008, -4/+20I'm not saying I like the guy, but I heard the released speaches. Once you get through the bull and rhetoric the preacher is right on the money with one exception. He's a member of the 9/11 conspiracy believers. But also he is a Chicago preacher. Those churches have a kind of fire in them that you don't see anywhere else in the world and that kind of loud bombastic preaching is the norm there. He may be saying all sorts of seemingly inflammatory *****, but he's really just preaching to the choir and telling his people what they like to hear. It's been going on for decades and it's as much about letting off steam as it is church. In fact in my eyes the "Holy Rollers" as they used to be called are the only ones who have turned church into any kind of an enjoyable experience. That church scene in the Blues Bros was no exaggeration. They are that nutso on Sunday.
- dartmanx, on 04/04/2008, -2/+16Did you forget the link to the Rick Astley video in there?
- Vermifax, on 04/04/2008, -2/+15You fail. Step aside, please. It's time for REAL Americans, now. Corporate, elitist warmongers have had their turn.
Americans need their country back, now. Obama 2008. - brufleth, on 04/04/2008, -5/+18I'd hardly call a couple sermons which pretty accurately represent the situations of the past and present in the US as lynching. Either way it warrants a serious look at the state of affairs in this country and an open discussion of race and racial prejudices.
- ghm101, on 04/04/2008, -0/+12is that the smoking pile of rubble germany of 1945 or the arguably normal germany of 1928 or so where they had economic & social problems but not so many dead people
- inactive, on 04/04/2008, -5/+16I was in the Marines as well, some of the most RACIST individuals I have ever met in my life were young Marines, both black and white. That is because they are 19 years old and only know what they have been taught by their parents and peers.. Rev Wright should be commended for his military experience and held in total CONTEMPT for his racism because he is old enough to know better now!!!!
- Clumber, on 04/04/2008, -0/+10The media doesn't care. Their job is to sell advertising space. If a news story about elephants who play piano will bump up their ratings share, then we get elephants playing pianos. They play what they think their target audience will watch and will stay butt in the chair through the commercials. "After the break, 30 seconds edited to piss you off!" and in fades Video Professor...
- jezsik, on 04/04/2008, -3/+13OK, so don't vote for Reverend Wright, then.
- Hillsfar, on 04/04/2008, -0/+10Then obviously you are NOT a true patriot.
- darksideownedu, on 04/04/2008, -3/+13Actually I believe he's using the "you're being a racist too you idiot" argument.
- MacEnvy, on 04/04/2008, -0/+9Timothy Leary died in 1996, so forgive me if I somehow doubt the veracity of your comment.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timothy_Leary - Hillsfar, on 04/04/2008, -1/+10You're taking his speech out of context. He's damning the bad parts of America, not ALL of it. Go listen to all of it.
- brufleth, on 04/04/2008, -6/+15I assume you're being sarcastic?
- nihilite, on 04/04/2008, -1/+10The civil rights movement occurred less than 50 years ago. Why are you shocked that people who lived through those times had their perspectives molded by it? people who live in oppression develop a point of view often very independent of the popular culture, even years after the hegemonic systems have been abolished. Doesn't make it right or rational, but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth to hear people with no real understanding of the situation condemning a man who has done a great deal of good.
i don't see this as any different than the "fire and brimstone" people hear at any sunday catholic service. Perhaps it's easier for some to blame god or satan or whatever for the bad things that happen; i think wright's answer is probably alot closer to the truth. - withears, on 04/04/2008, -11/+20Republicans don't care about true patriotism. Considering how they view true patriots like John Kerry and Max Cleland while they fawn over George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, is it any wonder that they have attacked Rev. White as they have?
- saxreturns, on 04/04/2008, -1/+10Didn't bother to read the first comment, huh?
- Hillsfar, on 04/04/2008, -2/+10You're comparing a Southside Chicago church leader and community activist who for 30 years has provided services and programs to help the poor and homeless. - jezsik, on 04/04/2008, -0/+8We respect the RIGHT of those people to say it, not what they say.
- JoeVet, on 04/04/2008, -0/+8Nice try kid but you fail. It was JFK who made the goal of a moon landing the top priority of NASA. He considered it the finish line for the ongoing space race and he did not want the Russians to win. The space race was at that time seen as a strategic battle in the cold war and whoever followed JFK would have followed the same path for the same reason. LBJ and Nixon really had no choice but to succeed or to lose the "high ground of space" to the enemy.
- cquinnd, on 04/04/2008, -4/+11And we respect the right of those people to say it, no matter how stupid we think they might be in saying it.
- swrostmore, on 04/04/2008, -1/+8Every sermon this guy has ever given has been analyzed with a fine-toothed comb, and yet nobody is able to point to a single direct quote that expresses "racist" ideas. Controversial? Yeah. Stupid? Sometimes. But..."racist?" Evidence or it didn't happen.
- Myonosken, on 04/04/2008, -0/+7Hitler came in 1931, when Germany was in a crash and seriously *****.
- inactive, on 04/04/2008, -2/+9Curious, which war(s) do you believe made American citizens more free?
The two most popular seem to be the "Civil War" and WWII.
First the Civil War wasn't even a civil war. A civil war is when two parties seek to control the same government. The South did not seek to control Washington DC, they wanted to secede from it, which was perfectly Constitutional. While slavery was abolished, it was not the primary motivation for the "Civil War". Lincoln sought to "preserve the Union". In the process he completely centralized the government and to this day there is no way to check the out of control growth of the federal government. Slavery would have died out, like it did in all western countries without a bloody war.
Second, WWII did defeat the Nazis but it empowered the Communists who were far worst. Stalin and Mao made Hitler and Hirohito look like humanitarians. The Nazis could not even cross the English channel to conquer Britain, let alone cross the Atlantic to conquer the U.S. - Gonthim, on 04/04/2008, -1/+7I'd recommend you look at some predictions of the numbers America and Japan would have lost if we actually tried to invade. The slaughter would have made d-day look like a picnic.
- TheHydrogens, on 04/04/2008, -0/+6I find that to be an unusually insightful comment. I've never really thought about things quite that way, but you have an excellent point. So many times it seems that "the white man" gets a bad name for all of the things that have happened in the past, but looking back, there has been a majority of white men that have stood up for minority rights, at least enough to change the laws to make things right.
- keltin, on 04/04/2008, -0/+6His one speech he gave about "Ask not..." helped galvanize a young generation. Then he was killed and that sanctimonious ruffian LBJ took over...that was actually a bit more important because of the damage he did to the USA.
- cquinnd, on 04/04/2008, -5/+11Perspective. Give us selected quotes from the lives of members of the current administration and I'm sure you'll find equally shocking statements. Except their comments are used to set public policy, not just to criticize the system.
- netant, on 04/04/2008, -2/+8Tragically, America is populated by a slew of morons nowadays. They associated an ***** with 1/3 of the population on Earth, and then declared war on them. They focussed on Natalie Holloway, Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, and Xbox, instead of criminal malfeasance by its government and what the investment banks were doing with credit derivatives and sub-prime lending. So very soon, all you America haters will be front row to the bitchslap of the century.
- idleminded, on 04/04/2008, -3/+9LA LI LU LE LO. LA LI LU LE LO.
- inactive, on 04/04/2008, -2/+8Wow, your going to deal with the world's problems. You must have god-like powers. It's that arrogant mentality that is causing most of the world's problems. People should worry about themselves and their families and let other people live there lives as they wish.
- cstude9, on 04/04/2008, -1/+7
Where justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and where any one class is made to feel that society is in an organized conspiracy to oppress, rob, and degrade them, neither persons nor property will be safe.
